Minors & U19s win Seniors back in action..

Our hurling teams are busy on all fronts with championship games at all levels. Last weekend was a very successful time with both our Minor Under 19 Hurlers having splendid victories. The Minors were at home to Mallow on Friday night knowing that only  a win or possibly a draw would be enough to advance in the competition. Well behind early in the second half the team then rallied and fought back to level the contest. On Sunday morning then our under 19 hurlers travelled to the Erin’s Own pitch at Caherlag to take on East Cork rivals Fr O Neill’s. This was a marvellous game of hurling, tough and physical but very sporting and at the final whistle we won by a margin of just three points. The action continues, home and away this weekend. On Saturday night our Senior hurlers play their final Group Round Robin game. Then on Sunday afternoon we host Erin’s Own and Bishopstown in the Senior Championship.

 REBEL OG MINOR HURLING.

 Bride Rovers 1-11 Mallow 2-08.
Mallow came to Rathcormac last Friday for our last group game in the Premier 2 Hurling championship. A victory for the visitors was vital for their progress. In reality they came to Pairc na Bride needing a 13 point victory to stay involved.
Aidan Hyland was in charge of the game. It took a long time for our lads to settle into the game. Mallow were physically bettering us on the field and  mistakes out the field by us led to two goals for the Avondhu side . Points from Conor and Kamso kept us in touch  before halftime when Mallow led by six points. Through modern social media technology came the news at the same time that Shandrum ( Newtown/Dromina)  were beating St. Catherines so if that trend continued we knew a draw would get us through. The lads knew a big half-hour was needed but things didn’t look great when  Mallow got the first score.  This meant we were 7 points down with 25 minutes left. Then Jack Collins won a great ball at half back and his delivery found its way to the net. Four behind now -game on!. Points from play from Cormac Barry   Ryan O Callaghan and Cormac O Sullivan had us just a single score behind.  Ronan brought us level with a long range free. We were now playing with the determination and passion associated with Bride Rovers. As the contest the closing stretch Mallow raised two further white flags. But points from Conor and Kamso levelled the game.  It would be unfair to highlight any lad for a second half performance. Everyone stepped up a level in a tremendous second half. Well done lads.
We now await to see our 1/4 final opponents. This game is due for decision on Friday week September the 2nd. Panel Ronan O Riordan, Darragh Kielty, Kieran Cotter, Eldon o Connor, Adam Hynes, Denis Cashman, Jack Collins, Cormac Barry, Cormac O Sullivan, Cillian Barry, Kamso Obi, Louie Roche, Conor O Riordan, Frank O Flynn,  Ryan O Callaghan,  Gearoid Gubbins, Oran Kielty, Cillian O Sullivan, Colin Hogan,  Ciaran O Dowd, Tomas O Riordan, Jack Hynes.

SENIOR HURLING ON SATURDAY.

On this coming Saturday evening we travel to Riverstown to take on Ballymartle in our third Group game of the Round Robin Section of the Championship. Our two games to date have been very different contests. An easy victory over Carrigtwohill was followed by a cruncher of a game against Ballyhea. In truth we were lucky to get a draw in this game. So a win and a draw sees us seeking a second win to be sure of a place in the knock-out end of the championship.

Ballymartle are still seeking their first win so it will be a tough encounter. Results from other years count for nothing at this stage.  Best of luck lads and a reminder for fans that the game in the Sarsfields Club grounds starts at 7pm on Saturday evening. As we play in Riverstown the other two teams in our Group, Carrigtwohill and Ballyhea will battle it out in Ballyanley- the Inniscarra Club Grounds.

COUNTY (EAST) UNDER 19 HURLING SEMI FINAL.

In a rip roaring game of hurling on Sunday morning we qualified for the Competition Final. We led for most of the game but could never shake off a determined Fr O Neills side. We had three early scores and were flying before O Neills struck for a goal and a point to lead. After that it was point for point as our forwards got some great scores from play and Adam Hayes hit over some mighty frees.  We led by two points, 0 11 to 1 6, at the short whistle. On the resumption we hit some lovely points. Our defence had to work very hard as the Fr O Neills forward division always looked threatening. We built up a seven point lead with ten minutes to go but the Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge side kept attacking. They brought  us back to just a two point lead- a dangerous margin, but an Adam Walsh point made it three and a 21 points to 2 12 victory. Truly this was a great game of hurling played by two very committed sides.  Well done lads on a superb win which sees us through to a Final meeting with St Catherines who defeated Watergrasshill also on Sunday last.

 UNDER 6 HURLING & FOOTBALL.

It’s great to see so many young boys learning the skills of our Gaelic Games at  a very young age. They are really enjoying their skills sessions and not a care in the world about scores, results or winning -just having fun. Under 6 training continues Wednesday evenings half 6 to 7.15pm and Saturday mornings 09:45 to 10:30 in the small astro pitch. New players always welcome.

UNDER 10 HURLING.

The U10s returned to match action after an 8 week break last Saturday where they travelled to Blarney to face the hosts in hurling.  Since the last matches, the boys have been getting down to some serious skill work and this was very evident on Saturday. The lads looked sharp, were excellent when competing for the ball and their movement to provide an option for a pass was a joy to watch, so much so that the opposition coaches commented on it. The lads took some great scores and were dominant throughout. The hard graft on the training field was there for all to see. For the first time this year, we also welcomed some of the under11s who were born in 2012 who qualify to play for us. Great to see Thomas, Denis and Harry join us. We await further fixtures from Rebel Óg but expect to have a game every Saturday until mid October with a football date set for this coming Saturday. Training continues on Mondays at 7.30 (hurling in the large astro) and Wednesdays on the main pitch at 6pm (football).

On Tuesday we hosted Na Piarsaigh for two games of football. It was the first meeting with the Northside Club at this level  and both games really showcased the football skills of both teams.

WREATH LAYING.

The Bride Rovers Club was represented in Clonakilty last Saturday when County Board Chairman Marc O Siochain laid a wreath at the Michael Collins statue in the town. In his address to the huge crowd  Mark outlined the deep involvement that Collins had with the GAA especially with the Geraldines Club in London. While in London Collins got to know both Sam Maguire and Liam McCarthy. In the aftermath of Bloody Sunday 1920 the finances of the GAA were in a very precarious position. As Minister for Finance Collins was instrumental in getting Government approval for Loans and Grants to help clear the Associations debts.
