Footballers through to the last eight. Action on all fronts..

It’s mid sizzling summer, well it was last weekend and the playing season is just busy, busy with games from under 6 up to Senior. Our Junior Footballers are through to the Championship Quarter Final. Last week saw a ‘three in a row’ of football victories with the Under 19’s defeating Passage on Wednesday, the Juniors edging out Glenbower on Thursday and the under 17’s defeating Fr O Neills on Friday night. This weekend we host our first big County Board game. Next week it’s the Cul Camp and into our Senior Championship campaign. We have games scheduled for all three fields, there’s painting going on so it’s full steam ahead. There’s also a nice Lotto Jackpot of over €22,00 to be won -if you’re not in you can’t win.

FOOTBALLERS WIN.

The Junior Footballers played their final game of the Round Robin series against Glenbower Rovers on Thursday evening in Lisgoold knowing that anything less than a win would see them departing the championship at the group stages.  Cloyne beat us in the first round and also defeated Aghada but lost to Glenbower. With two wins Cloyne were through so it was a simple ‘winner take all game’ between the two Rovers teams from the banks of the Bride and from shady Glenbower. Our lads started with intent and had four points on the scoreboard in the opening 10 minutes before Glenbower got up and running. There was little to choose between the two teams for the remainder of the first half with both sides kicking seven points to go in level at the short whistle. The second half started brightly and we added two early points before the Killeagh team hit the back of the net to take the lead for the first and only time over the hour. The goal was to be their only score in the second half with the Rovers defence tightening up and giving little away. With eight minutes remaining, Cian Hogan slotted an excellent goal to give the Rovers a three point cushion and a late free from Adam Walsh saw the Rovers win on a score line of 1-11 to 1-07. The lads have qualified for the Quarter Finals where they will face Cobh on the weekend of 14th August and this is a repeat of last year's East Cork final and will be another tough one for the us. It was a tough game on Thursday night so well done to all involved.
The team and scorers on Thursday were: Stephen Glasgow, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Shane O'Connor, Jason Manix, Paddy O'Flynn (0-01), Shane Walsh, Eoin Roche, William Finnegan (0-02), Liam Forde, Adam Walsh (0-01), DJ Cahill (0-01), Cian Hogan (1-01), Brian Roche (0-02), Daniel Dooley, Conor Barry (0-03), Ben Hogan, Jamie Barry, Jordan Manix, Jack Connor, Damien Buckley, Edmund Cashman, Seamus Ahern, Paul Larkin, John O'Sullivan, David Barry, Ronan O'Connell, Nicky Kelleher, and Josh Ahern. While that game was being played in Lisgoold Carrignavar defeated Lisgoold in Pairc na Bride in the same competition and with two wins and a draw are into the semi Final along with Castlemartyr. The other quarter final is Cloyne v Youghal.

UNDER 13’s BUSY.

The U13 Green team were at home to Kinsale on Saturday morning in Pairc Na Bhride. This was the penultimate game in the league phase for these boys and they put in a fantastic performance over the hour winning on a score line of 3-12 to 1-07. This result means that they have qualified for the knockout stages of the league with a game still to be played. The game was played in hot conditions and there was little between the teams in the opening quarter with the Rovers leading at the first water break on a score line of 2-02 to 1-02. The goals in the opening quarter came from Sebastian and Micheal. The lads continued to take their scores in the opening period and led 2-07 to 1-04 at half time. The second half ran along similar lines with the Rovers continuing to take their scores with Darragh pouncing late on to score the Rovers third goal.

The Gold team footballers had their opening game of the C3 league at home to Douglas on Thursday night last. They say goals win games and on this occasion it was saves that won the game with the Douglas keeper and backs blocking effort after effort from a lively Rovers forward line but on this occasion Douglas went away with the spoils winning on a score line of 6-10 to 1-10. In fairness to our lads they played some lovely football and scored great points

The fixtures for the coming week are Gold Team Hurling v Sarsfields on tonight Thursday evening at 8pm in the Juvenile Pitch and the Green team have their final P1 hurling league game at home to St. Finbarrs on Monday night at 8pm in Pairc Na Bhride.

 County Under 19 FC.

Our under19 team  met Passage West in the County Chamionship last Wednesday night in Pairc na Bride. This is a 13 a side competition but normally Clubs play 15 a side when both teams agree but unfortunately Passage only had 14 players so we played 13 a side on the night we had a great turnout with 21 togging out well done lads.  Our lads played a lovely brand of football and had a superb victory on a scoreline of 3-9 to 0-11 we are now into a semi final which will be played in August but we have  no date yet.

Panel Darragh, Liam, Kieran, Adam Hynes, Conor, Davy, Cillian, Ronan, Adam Walsh, Adam Hayes, Edmond, Nicky, Louie, Kams, Denis, Eldon, Ronan O Riordan, Ben, Cormac, Cillian. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Davy Barry.

JUNIOR HURLERS WIN ON ALL IRELAND SUNDAY.

Junior Hurling League Div4 V: Cloyne Venue: Rathcormac

Final Score: Bride Rovers 1-10, Cloyne 1-06

Panel M O'Connell, L Collins, T Kearney, L O'Flynn, J Kearney, M Liddane, J O'Sullivan (0-1), F Collins, N Kelleher, B Collins, T Macak (0-3), J Tobin, C O'Callaghan (0-2), S O'Flynn (0-4), C Howard (1-0), J Conor, B Lahive, P O'Driscoll, J Buckley, P Noonan, D Kelleher, J Murphy.

In what was a very warm Pairc Na Bride on Sunday both teams played out a very enjoyable Junior Hurling match. Both teams went score for score during the first half with our points coming from Tom (2) and Craig, but it was a well finished goal from Cian which came in the 25th minute which was the difference between the sides at half time as we lead 1-3 to 4 points. We started the second half the brighter and points from Tom followed by a great long-range effort from John, another from Craig and two from Shane saw us leading on a score of 1-8 to 0-4 after 50 minutes. As always Cloyne never gave up and they got the next 1-1 to leave only 3 points between the teams with 5 minutes remaining. Our lads held on tough and two more points from Shane either side of a Cloyne point saw us out winners on a score line of 1-10 to 1-6. It was a very warm day for Hurling but as thousands travelled to Croke Park and another fine crowd attended the car Boot Sale our hurlers along with Cloyne put on a fine display of our National Game.

UNDER 10’s EAGERLY TRAINING .

The under10s have been getting the heads down in recent weeks and getting on with some fundamental skills of both hurling and football. The mid-season break from games is great for working on perfecting skills and the lads are now doing some movement and wall ball sessions to help improve their game. Last Saturday, they were delighted to see their fellow clubmen and Cork players Brian and Eoin Roche down at the pitch and the twins put them through the finer part of the skill work that they have been working so hard on. The coming weeks sees us have an extra hurling session per week in the astro doing wall ball with football continuing on Wednesday nights and hurling again on Saturdays. We are so lucky and proud as a Club in recent years to have seen so many Bride Rovers players line out with Cork under, under 16, under 17/Minor, under 20/21 and Senior teams. All these players are real live super heroes for the generations coming up.

UNDER 17 FOOTBALLERS WIN.
Last Friday evening our lads got their under 17 football championship underway with a home game against Fr O Neills.  From the second Aidan Hyland threw the ball in Fr O Neills retreated into a 14 man defensive formation leaving only one player in our half of the field.
It was frustrating for spectators to watch and for our players difficult ‘to break down’ but they got stuck in.
Our lads did the best they could to break it down and points from Cormac, Conor and Louie had us leading by 0 5  to 0 2 at half time.   It was the same set up for second half.  When we got a goal from Conor we thought game might open up but unfortunately it didn’t but sure that’s the way many Gaelic football games are played nowadays  A couple more of outstanding points from Louie saw us home by 1-8 to 1-4.  Fr O Neils getting their green flag from a  penalty with the last kick of the game.
We have Youghal away on the 29th of July and Cobh away on the 1st of August. Seems crazy but it’s another baffling decision by Rebel Og to play championship games in such close proximity like this.
Panel. Ryan. Cillian. Eldon. Luke. Kieran. Denis. Cormac. Adam. Kamso. Cillian. Ben. Connor. Ronan. Louie. Ciaran Cameron. Gearoid. Cormac. Jack. Upcoming Fixtures under17 Premier2 Hurling championship v St Catherines away this coming  Friday at 7pm.

CUL CAMP NEXT WEEK.

Our annual Kellogs Cul Camp takes place next week. Its ’a massive organisational undertaking but those involved have been pre-planning for months. With 200 participants and close on 100 helping out this is an example of the GAA at grassroots level doing what it’s best at. This past week was glorious weather-wise but the heat was a bit overbearing. Forecast is that next week will be fine but not too hot. That should mean five days of great fun and skills coaching for the youngsters involved. The Bride Rovers Club is so grateful to all those who are helping. Many have taken holidays just for the Cul camp and others  have arranged work schedules in order to be at Pairc na Bride during next week. We hope everyone has a great week.

LIMERICK WIN THREE IN A ROW.

What a superb team of hurlers and athletes this Limerick Senior team are. On Sunday in Croke Park they complete  historic 3 in a row and joined Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny in that unique ‘3 in a Row Club’. John Kiely’s team were brilliant though Brian Cody’s side were also top class. Who’ll back against them doing a 5 in a Row now? When John Woods travelled to Castlelyons Church on Thursday February the 12th in 1885 for his wedding he could never have imagined any connection with the 2022 All Ireland Hurling Final! The GAA was only sixteen weeks old at the time. On that fateful day John Woods wed Hanora O Brien from Castlelyons with the ‘Land League Priest’ Fr Ferris officiating. Last Sunday in Croke Park Conor Boylan came on as a sub for Limerick in the 60th minute and scored a vital point. John and Hanora Woods who married in 1885 were the great, great grandparents of Conor Boylan.

DAVIE MURPHY RIP.

The death of Davie Murphy of Castletownroche this week was the cause of immense sadness, not alone in his native parish but throughout Cork GAA circles. Davie was a brilliant hurler, clubman and fundraiser but most of all a great husband to Angela and father to Cha and Tom and to them we extend our deepest condolences. Davie had strong links with our parish as his mother was Mary Mulcahy from Rathcormac. In 1965 Davie was the proud captain of the Cork hurling team that won the Intermediate All Ireland Title with our own Seanie Barry in the forward line. Davie was a first cousin of Denis, Mary, Tom and Sean Mulcahy and we send our sympathy to all his Mulcahy relations as well. A great GAA and Community man Davie Murphy was well loved and respected by everyone. May he rest in peace.

CAPTAINS.

Our Senior Hurling Captain and Vice Captain for 2022 were recently selected. Two outstanding young players, both of whose ‘roots’ go deep into Bride Rovers Club history were announced to lead the Senior Hurling team this season. Our Captain is Paddy O Flynn and our Vice Captain is Kieran Kearney, two great young men and men proud to wear the Green, White and Gold.

UNDER 6 HURLING.

Our under 6 players are really enjoying their training and games at present. Last Saturday morning, Watergrashill came to Pynes Field to play us in hurling. It was really a great morning of hurling with no talk of sweepers, zonal defence or lateral forward interaction- no just great fun and enjoyment and that’s what hurling is all about. Training continues Wednesday evening’s  18:30 to 19:15 and Saturday mornings  09:45 to 10:30 in the small Astro pitch. All those born in 2016 are more than welcome to come along and join in.

IRONMEN TERRY & GEORGIE; PLEASE SUPPORT.

I am doing the Ironman Cork on the 14th of August and in conjunction with the event I would like to raise funds for LauraLynn. Any support for this worthy cause would be greatly appreciated. I am fundraising through my Facebook page. Georgie is also doing it.

 SYMPATHY.

It was with shock and sadness that we learned last week of the death of one of our greatest supporters. Sr. Antonia (Peggy) Murphy formerly of Raheen, Kildinan died unexpectedly in Cork. From a family whose involvement with Gaelic Games pre-dates the founding of the GAA Peggy was an ardent and passionate follower of Bride Rovers. Though she never drove she rarely missed a Rovers Championship game. Her immediate family and all in Bride Rovers will sorely miss her. We extend our deepest sympathy to her brothers Sean and Paudie, her sister Eilish and the extended Murphy family and to the Presentation Sisters. May Peggy rest in peace.
