EAST CORK J. H. League round up

We had two recent games in the Junior Hurling Leagues, at home to Fr O Neills in Division 4 and away to Aghada in Division 2. Details;

Division 4 JH League game, 1st of June in Rathcormac v Fr O Neills . Final Score 4-12 each. Squad; M O'Connell, J Conor, L Collins, P O'Leary, J O'Sullivan, M Liddane, O Roche, N Kelleher, J Powell, John Buckley, T Macak, J Tobin, C O'Callaghan, S O'Flynn, A Hayes, J Kearney, D Burke, P O'Driscoll, A Barry, L O'Flynn,  Jamie Buckley, B Collins, T Murray, T Kearney, B Lahive, D Kelleher. It was a lovely evening for hurling. Fr. O'Neills started the game much the brighter and opened up a 1-6 to no score lead. Adam Hayes got a goal for to open our account but O'Neills kept the pressure on and had a ten point  2-8 to 1-1 lead at half time. O'Neills started the 2nd half brightly and another goal and a point saw them leading on a score of 3-9 to 1-2 after 5 minutes. Things didn’t look great at this point, down by 13 points. We had a great squad to pick from on the night and with the addition of some fresh legs we grew into the game as the second half went on. A goal from Shane O'Flynn narrowed the gap and then a string of points from Dave (4), Tom, Pa (2) and Alan had reduced the margin to 2-10 to 3-11 before O'Neills got another goal in the 22nd minute. We kept going though and a point from Brian Collins followed by a goal from Pa reduced the margin to 4 points 3-11 to 4-12 with time nearly up. Dave Burke got a goal from a 21 yard free to leave a point between the teams and with the last puck of the game put a 65" over to leave the sides level on 4-12 apiece. It was a great comeback and a very exciting finish. Well done lads

Date: Monday 13th of June. Venue: Rostellan Junior Hurling  Hurling League Division 4Vs Aghada.

Final score Bride Rovers  1-25 to Aghada’s 0-15

Panel S Knox (0-1(f)), L Collins, M Liddane, J Conor, S Ahern, L Forde, A Buckley (0-1), D Barry, C Hazelwood, C Barry(0-14 (6f)), C Ryan (0-2), D Buckley(0-3, (2f)), J O’Keeffe (0-1) , D Burke (0-1), A Hayes (1-2), J O’Sullivan, B Colllins, P O’Driscoll

It was a very lively start to the game with Shaun Knox putting over a long range free followed by two points from Conleith, a well finished goal by Adam and a Conor Barry free saw us lead 1-4 to 2 points after 6 minutes. Conor Barry continued to be very accurate from both play and frees with 4 further points and 1 from Dave Burke saw us extended our lead to 1-9 to 3 pts by the 15-minute mark. There was great work rate throughout the team and we were awarded with more points from Adam, Conor, Adrian and Jesse and went in at half time with a 1-17 to 0 7 lead. Conor Barry opened the scoring in the 2nd half straight from the throw but Aghada came back very well to get the next 5 points to leave the score 1-18 to 12 after 40 minutes. The lads settled back into a rhythm and further points from Adam, Damien and Conor saw us out winners on a final score 1-25 to 15 points. We have one remaining league game against Carrigtwohill which is fixed for Sunday the 3rd of July in Rathcormac.

 CORK DOUBLE STILL ON.

After wins v Antrim in the Hurling and Limerick in the Football Cork are still in the contention for both Liam and Sam, as are Galway and Clare! Thurles are on the road to Thurles this Saturday to meet Henry Shefflin’s Galway. The following Saturday the footballers are in Croke Park for a tasty game against the Dubs. C’mon the Rebels!  It seems accommodation in The Capitol is scarce but with Mayo and Dublin playing on Sunday there should be some availability in Killarney and Westport!

NOY JOY FOR BARTLEMY.

Leamlara proved too strong in the second half of the Sciath na Scoil Final against Bartlemy last Wednesday. After a close first half the Leamlara team won by 8 points in the end. Well done to the Bartlemy team in reaching the Final and getting to play in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

 UNDER 13’s BUSY.

The U13 Green team had their first outing in the Premier 2A football league at home to Erins Own in Pairc Na Bhride on Saturday 4th June. The Boys have been graded at Premier 2A in a league with Nemo Rangers, Kilworth Araglen, Erins Own, Kinsale and Youghal.

The Rovers started strong and Finn pointed three early scores to settle any nerves. With 10 minutes gone the Erins Own keeper pulled off one of many fantastic saves and on this occasion Darren was in the right place at the right time where he collected the rebound and slotted home the opening goal for the Rovers. At half time the Rovers were leading on a score line of 1-06 to 0-02 points. During the second half, the lads continued to work hard in wet conditions and were taking their scores when the chances came along with Sebastian kicking some fantastic points from full forward. One of the moves of the game saw a fast break from defence and the ball worked through the lines with Micheál finishing to the net for the Rovers second goal. The final score was 2-12 to 1-03 and this was a great win to start their league campaign.

The team and scorers on Saturday was: Eoin Morey, Euan O'Grady, Oliver Harris, Nathan Cahill, Ciarán O'Donovan, Cathal Barry, Danny Walsh, Finn O'Driscoll (0-05), Mark Hynes, Evan Quaine,  Micheál Walsh (1-02), Dylan Keating, Tadhg Cronin, Sebastian Byrd (0-04), Darren Kearney(1-01), Jeff O'Connell, Daniel Gubbins, Shane McCarthy, Conor Geaney and Cian Cashman. The next game in this league will be a tough challenge when they travel to Trabeg to play Nemo Rangers on Friday evening for a 7.30pm throw in.

The U13s Green team hurlers were at home to Carrigaline on Saturday last in their second game in the P1 league. Carrigaline came into this one fancied to take the spoils having had a strong result against Carrigtwohill in their opening game but the Rovers were not going to lie down and a huge performance from all 18 players resulted in a fantastic win on a score line of 4-08 to 2-08.

This was a highly entertaining hour of hurling and the Rovers were quickly into their stride with Micheál slotting over the bar for the opening score. This was followed by two early goals from Finn and Matthew with Micheál getting two further points before the short whistle. Having played with the aid of a strong breeze, the Rovers led at halftime on a scoreline of 2-04 to 1-03. The lads knew that a strong second half performance would be required because Carrigaline would have the advantage of the elements behind them. The lads came out and never looked like losing this one as they battled for every ball. During the second half Finn contributed five further points and with goals from John and Micheál, the Rovers saw the game out to get their first win of the campaign.  The team and scorers on Saturday was:  Ciarán O'Donovan, Bobby Sweeney, Oliver Harris, Calum Somers, Mark Hynes, Cathal Barry, Danny Walsh, Finn O'Driscoll (1-05), Tadhg Cronin, Matthew Swalbe O'Sullivan (1-0), Micheál Walsh (1-03), Donagh Hurley, John Noonan (1-0), Sebastian Byrd, Darren Kearney, Daniel Gubbins, Euan O'Grady and Nathan Cahill.   The next game in this league will be a home game against Carrigtwohill on Saturday 25th June at 4pm in Pairc Na Bhride.

It was a thriller in Castle Road in Cork on Monday night as our Junior Camogie girls played a drawn League Final against Midleton. Well done girls

UNDER 14’S PIPPED IN FINAL.

Bride Rovers under 14s played their East Division 2 Football final last Sunday evening as part of a double header in Dungourney GAA grounds.  The match was preceded by the shield final where Lisgoold bested Castlelyons.  In the main event Bride Rovers U14s knew their work was cut out for them against strong opposition St Catherines who had won their own semi-final by 25 points.  That said, the boys weren't overawed and tore into the Catherine's boys from early on leading to a tight match in the first half.  During that half the defence was solid with David Dixon and Jamie Walsh tight in their corners with Cathal Barry rock solid at full back.  The half back line was in no mood to give up any easy chances with James Finn and Darragh O'Farrell either side of Éanna Lyons with all three tight in defensive mode but ready to break out when the situation allowed it.  Garry Quirke and Denis Fitzgerald roamed in midfield and kept the linkage between front and back with some lovely kickouts provided by goalie Adam Kelleher.  In the forwards Michael Gubbins, Jack Lynch and James Larkin lurked around the 45 trying to eek out gaps in the opposing defence.  Matthew Kenny, Owen Ryan and Eoghan Buckley set up along the 20 metre full forward line in that first half and worked hard to create opportunities for their team.  For most of the first half Bride Rovers had the majority of possession but failed to capitalise on their many chances.  With five minutes to the break St Catherine's broke out and scored two quick goals which, many felt, gave an unfair reflection on the first half performance with St Catherines going in with a lead.  During that first half and at half time many of the subs were introduced, who added fresh impetus to the team with Con McCormack, Shane O'Dowd, Micheal Walsh and Finn O'Driscoll all playing their part in getting the Rovers lads back into the game with Mark Hynes joining them in the second half.  In the first 20 minutes of the second half it looked as if the game was getting away from the Rovers lads as Catherines produced their best spell of the match and kept increasing their lead.  That said, the boys never gave up and in the last ten minutes put their foot on the pedal and got the deficit down to 1 point.  The game was in the balance at this stage and all in the grounds felt that the team that got the next score would win; and so it transpired.  Bride Rovers won the next kick out and with some great interplay lead to a situation with Denis Fitzgerald beating two men and bearing down on goal from the left side of the pitch.  Some ferocious defending by Catherines managed to shepherd his shot left and wide.  On the subsequent kick out, with two minutes left, and with the Rovers lads committed towards attack Catherines took advantage and nipped in for a goal, ending the Bride Rovers lads' comeback.  Thus, the team left Dungourney disappointed despite having put in a tremendous team performance and having fought hard from start to finish.  The boys though will take great heart from their performance, which hopefully bodes well for next year.  In the meantime, the U14s look forward to the East/North/Mid Division 1 hurling Shield final against Kilara óg in Pynes Field on Wednesday 15th Jun.  Final Score: Bride Rovers 3-5  St Catherines 4-6.  Panel: Adam Kelleher, David Dixon, Cathal Barry, Jamie Walsh, Darragh O'Farrell, Éanna Lyons, James Finn, Garry Quirke, Denis Fitzgerald, Michael Gubbins, Jack Lynch, James Larkin, Eoghan Buckley, Owen Ryan, Matthew Kenny, Con McCormack, Shane O'Dowd, Micheal Walsh, Finn O'Driscoll, Mark Hynes, Adam Murphy Fitzgibbon.

UNDER 12’S START LEAGUE WITH WIN.

Our under12 boys started their Football East Division 3 league campaign on Monday evening in Pynes. Our neighbours Glenville provided the opposition.  It was a close game throughout but our lads got 2 goals in the first half which kept us ahead at half time.  The second half was very even with our lads working well as  unit to defend and attack. So a good start to our league with a win. Final score Bride Rovers 3:9 Glenville 1:9.

Next game is hurling league division 2 at home to Lisgoold on Monday 20th in Pynes at 7:30.
