Covid still around..

Just when we thought it was all plain sailing, hurling and footballing from now on we got a stark reminder that the covid pandemic is not yet past history. We were fixed to play Round 2 of the REDFM Senior Hurling League against Erins Own last Sunday. The game was transferred from Caherlag to Pairc na Bride because of pitch work at the Erins Own HQ. Then on Saturday came the news that the fixture was cancelled because of Covid in the Erins Own squad. It’s a timely reminder to still stay cautious in regards to taking preventative measures for the covid which is still in the community. The Erins Own game has now been refixed for this coming Friday evening April 1^st in Pairc na Bride at 6.45. As a result of this the Minor (U17) hurling game v Mallow has now been switched to Pynes that night. On Saturday week then we take on Mallow in Senior Hurling, a game that doubles as a league game and the Final of the Tony Walsh Memorial Tournament at 6pm.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL.

Our next game, Round 3, in the East Cork JF league is a home fixture for us. We are home to Midleton on this coming Sunday 3rd April at 12.45pm on the Main Pitch. We have had two wins in our opening ties v Carrignavar and Glenbower Rovers.

UNDER 19 GRADE.

The new under 19 grade was to commence across the County on last night march 30^th. The Masters Fixtures Plan was that Clubs would have football and hurling games on alternate Wednesdays for eight weeks. When the Football groupings were announced last week we were in a small group along with St Colmans(Cloyne/Russell Rovers) and Fr O Neills. With just 3 teams it would mean only two games for us. Then St Colmans withdrew altogether from the under 19 grade and were replaced in our Group by Passage West. The upshot of all this means we had no game last night. The hurling starts on next Wednesday night. Our Fixture List for the under 19 Leagues is now as follows;

Wednesday May 4^th Hurling v Carrigtwohill. The plan is that once these leagues are completed the under 19 championships will be run off.
SHL Round 1 v Carrigtwohill
On Tuesday week last, our re-arranged Red FM sponsored Senior Hurling league fixture with Carrigtwohill went ahead under lights in Carrig.
This was a good competitive hurling match with very little between both teams. At half time the sides were level 1-04 to 0-07. The Rovers points coming from Paddy O’Flynn, Shane Walsh, Conor Barry & Shane O Connor.
In the second half Carrigtwohill were on top early on which yielded them 2 goals to open up a 4 point lead. The Rovers only 2 scores coming from Paddy O Flynn and Conor Barry. As the game wore on the Rovers began to come into it. A well taken goal by Adam Walsh reduced the deficit. Carrig replied with a few points while points from David Barry and Josh Ahern kept the Rovers in it. Carrig finished the better with 2 well taken points to win on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-11. Under 13’s v Erins Own.

Bride Rovers under13 Football Green team were at home on Saturday evening for the opening game in their Premier 2 league grading competition with Erins Own providing the opposition. The grading competition consists of 4 teams with the results determining what level each team will compete in for the 2022 league campaign. Bride Rovers under 13 Green team Footballers are in a group with Midleton, Erins Own and Youghal.

The game on Saturday was their first of the season and played in Pairc Na Bhride which was in fantastic condition. The Rovers started strongly and kicked some excellent scores in the opening half with Erins Own keeping in touch with some well taken goals of their own to leave the Rovers ahead by a single point at the short whistle on a score line of 2-05 to 3-01. The second half saw our lads up the work-rate and take control for large parts to run out comfortable winners in the end on a score line of 6-12 to 5-03.

The fixtures for the coming week for the under13s are: Gold team at home on tonight Thursday 31st March in C3 Hurling Grading v Mallow - Juvenile Pitch, and the under13 Green team Hurling v Erins Own in Pairc Na Bhride at 5pm on Saturday 2nd April next.

UNDER 12’s OPEN CAMPAIGN.

Our under 12’s have our first football league match a home on next Monday April 4th at 7pm in the juvenile pitch. Training continues on Wednesdays - hurling at 7 o clock and on Saturdays – football at 11 in the juvenile pitch. Brian Dillons are the visitors for the opening game. The Fixture list for the under 12s for the next few weeks is as follows;

A word of thanks to all those Club members who were on Lotto Ticket selling duty on last Saturday and Sunday. Saturday saw Pairc na Bride thronged with juveniles and parents and mentors. On Sunday it was at a sun splashed Car Boot Sale that the ticket sales went well.

Cork v Waterford in League Final.

May 15^th in Walsh Park was a date many of us had pencilled in as a crucial date for Cork Hurlers. By then hopefully we’ll have beaten Limerick (in Cork April 17^th) and Clare (in Thurles May 1^st). if we had two wins we could head to Waterford with a pep in our step! Little did we think a few weeks back that both Counties would have a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the Munster Championship in the form of a League Final. So on next Saturday afternoon the cars will be heading for Semple Stadium from all corners of the Decies and the Rebel County. Much of the talk this week was ‘will he or wont he play’-referring to the Red Card shown to Austin Gleeson in last Sunday’s semi final win over Wexford. Personally I’d love to see Cork take on a full strength Waterford side but that’s just my opinion. It should be a great game as Cork seek a first league Title since 1998. Tht year the Final was also in Thurles on may 18^th and Waterford were also the opponents, Cork won by 2 14 to 0 13. Seanie O Farrell of Carrig was top scorer with 1 3 and the other scorers were Alan Browne 1 0, Joe Deane 0 3, Seanie McGrath o 3, Kieran Morrisson 0 2, Pat Ryan 0 2 and Fergal McCormack 0 1. Going to Thurles for big hurling games is so special. Twenty four years ago a crowd of 32,890 were present in Semple Stadium for the decider- we could easily have that and more on Saturday evening, c’mon the Rebels!

PROGRESS ON KITCHEN.

Great progress was made last week on getting the kitchen installed in the Club Room. Anyone who has an hour to spare any evening just contact Denis Ahern to give a hand.

UNDER 10s TAKE ON NEMO. The under10 boys started their season with the visit of Cork footballing royalty, Nemo Rangers, last Saturday. Nemo and Bride Rovers fielded 4 teams each. From the start our lads proved they can not only match these teams but indeed dominate at times. Thirty lads gave their all and the big take from the day was that it is hard to match the work rate of these Rovers players. A fabulous first football match and great results all round. We welcome Bishopstown in hurling next Saturday April 2nd. Hurling training Wednesday night at 6pm. BARTLEMY SCHOOL FUNRUN.

On Sunday April 24^th the annual Bartlemy NS Fun run takes place. It’s a 6K course where participants can run, jog or walk in an enjoyable manner. Race HQ will be in the Parish Hall with a starting time of 12 noon.

HECTIC ACTION.

It was a wonderful scene at Pairc na Bride last Saturday morning with so much activity going on. Lisgoold and Nemo Rangers were visitors playing our boys at different age grades. With several more teams training and the same out at Pynes it was just fantastic to witness. Now that games and training are in full swing it’s mighty to see the three pitches we have plus the Astros in constant use.

MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

Bride Rovers 3-06 Kiltha Og 4-14
On a glorious Sunday morning the juvenile combination team of Dungourney and Castlemartyr came to Rathcormac to play us in the football league. With four players out through injury from the start it was going to be a tough encounter. We got off to a good start playing some nice football. At half time we were 1-4 to five points up.
In the second half we lost Kamso. Ciaran. Eldon and Cameron to injuries and Kiltha Og were far stronger & ran out deserving winners. Hopefully all the lads will recover well from their injuries. SYMPATHY.

All in Bride Rovers extend sympathy to the Hoskins family of Ballyda, Bartlemy on the tragic death of Mary last week. Daughter of the late Moss and Kit (nee Sheehan) Kearney Mary was well respected and well loved by friends, neighbours and work colleagues in the Cork Revenue Office. The Hoskins and Kearney families over generations have contributed so much to community life in our parish and all over North East Cork. We extend our deepest sympathy to Liam, Catherine, Thomas, Denis and Brian and to Mary’s aunt Julia May Gowen in San Jose, California. May Mary rest in peace.
