Senior Hurlers in semi..
It might be November but the GAA season continues in full swing for the Club. This past week was as busy as ever with the Senior, under18 and under16 hurlers and under 13 footballers all in competitive footballers action. After losing to Mallow in our last Group game the Senior Hurlers faced Blarney in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday evening and won a great game. We were in action off the field too, in the Munster Final of Scor but didn’t progress to the All Ireland Final. It’s back to football this weekend with a trip to scenic Ahiohill in West Cork to take on Urhan in the County Championship. Our Lotto Jackpot was won with €20,000 going to Skehenarinky.

There was time not so long ago when a 5 o clock fixture of a Saturday evening would be out of the question. I can recall East Cork Board and County Board meetings where we’d vent vehement opposition to such a suggestion because of so many dairy farmers on the team milking cows, how things have changed! It was just brilliant to get to play on the ‘new’ Pairc Ui Chaoimh surface, for several of our players it was their first time playing in the HQ of Cork GAA – when the two quarter finals were fixed for the previous week Pairc Ui Rinn was the venue so the change was very beneficial. In fairness the playing surface was outstanding, simply the best. The game was cracker, starting with the Stadium bathed in late Autumn sunshine and ending with the floodlights on. We started in flying form and a pointed free from William Finnegan was followed up by similar scores from distance by Paddy O Flynn, Shane O Connor and Brian Roche. With Cork Hurler Mark Coleman featuring well for Blarney it was the Mid Cork side who came into the game. They had three points before William made it 0 5 to 0 3 after ten minutes. Blarney were level with two points, 0 5 to 0 5. Our midfield and defence combined veery well with some great clearances. Then just before the first water break Coleman struck a Blarney goal to leave them 1 5 to 05 n front after the first quarter. In fairness even when Blarney went four ahead 1 8 to 0 7 the lads didn’t falter and white flags from Cian O Connor and two from William Finnegan saw us get a grip in the game again. A great shot from Cian O Connor came back off the post and Michael Collins swept the sliotar to the net and we were ahead 1 10 to 1 9 in the 28th minute. Shane Barrett stuck a Blarney point to leave it 1 10 for each side at half time. We had been up four points and then behind by a similar margin so one could say it was fair reflection of the game.
A noticeable feature of the match was our tackling and great running off the ball. WE really took over in the third quarter and when the second water-break came in the 17th minute we were 2 15 to 1 13 in front. In that period we added 1 5 and kept Blarney to 3 points. When Cian Hogan sent a puck out to Paddy O Flynn he struck a long ranging shot goal wards which ended up in the net. It was great boost and after that points from William, Brian, Michael Collins and Daniel Dooley took our tally to 2 21, Blarney kept attacking in the last few minutes added 1 1 to leave us winners by 2 21 to 1 15. It was great win, well done lads and a word of congrats too to Liam Barry, Noel Crowley and Pa Kearney and all those involved in the Backroom Team- the unseen heroes. We are now in the County Semi Final and a meeting with Fr O Neills. The Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge team were beaten in last years final and beat us in a group game in Pairc Ui Rinn. They are the hottest of favourites to win the title but sure we are in a semi final which is great progress. Well done also on Saturday evening to the big crowd of supporters. Great to see Frs. Seanie, Gussie and Fachtna, with them was Fr Bernie Cotter of Youghal, a great Gael and a former Cork Hurler, he played Senior with Cork in 1958.

The last time we played Blarney in Senior was in August 2010 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh also. We were behind by 1 4 to 0 5 at half time. A second half goal from Barry Johnson after a pass from Donal Ryan helped us to a 1 14 to 1 9 victory. The team that day was Denis Fitzgerald, Shane Kearney, Brendan Walsh, Trevor Moloney, Jason Pratt, Barry Murphy, Aidan Collins, Brian Murphy, Padraig Murphy, Kieran Collins (0-1), Barry Johnson (1-9), Jerome O'Driscoll, (0-1), Michael Collins ((0-1), Sean Ryan (0-1), Stephen Boyce (0-1).Subs: Donal Ryan, Michael Kearney, Pat Walsh. With football this weekend the Hurling semi final will be going back a week at least.
JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS OUT IN THE COUNTY.
Our Junior A Grade Footballers ae on the County Championship trail this coming Saturday. We face Beara side Urhan in the County Quarter Final on Saturday in the St Oliver Plunketts Club grounds in Ahiohill. From Rathcormac Ahiohill is 53 miles so give yourself plenty time with the map, satnav and Googlemaps. Urhan are a football only Club. They have plenty footballers -their second team play Glenvlle in the County B Grade championship on Sunday. We had a great win over Cobh in Carrignavar but this game on Saturday represents a massive challenge but Jason Mannix and his team will give their all. We beat Urhan in an under 16 final a few years back. VIncent Cronin and Batt and Richie have worked wonders with this team so best of luck to all on Saturday. Go for it lads

Bride Rovers 5-15 Watergrasshill 0-05.
At Felix Sarsfield Memorial Park, Watergrasshill in monsoon-like conditions we took on the locals on Sunday in the under 16 championship hurling competition. Mike Walsh from the St Catherines Club was referee and gave the go ahead for the game. We got a great start with a goal from Denis followed by white flags from Ryan, Ben and Louie. Even early on it was noticeable that Ciaran was winning and holding up the ball well. Despite playing against the wind our six backs were dominating their opponents led by Adam playing at full back. Luke and Keiran were working hard in Midfield. Further goals by Louie (2) and Ben had us in commanding position. The lads worked very well together with Darragh and Eldon passing great ball to Cillian and Cameron. When the half time whistle blew we were 4-3 to 4 points ahead.
We came out in the second half and continued our hard work with no let up . A great run by Kamso resulted in a peach of a pass to Colin who put over a great point. Frank then found the net with a pile driver. Further points from Cillian, Ryan and Louie had us well in Front. When the Hill got any chance Ronan dealt with it comfortably. Jack Collins and Cormac Barry both added scores when they came on. Gearoid Gubbins also contributed when he was brought in . Oran came on at half back and slotted in nicely.
Overall it was a great win in horrendous conditions away from home. We have a home semi final on Sunday November the 14th against Aghada. Panel; Ronan. UNDER 13 ‘s WIN SHIELD Final.
The Under13s finished up their season with a North Board shield final which, due to scheduling conflicts in the original venue, took place in Pynes Field. As the last game of our campaign the boys were fired up and eager to give their best and the performance matched the intent. Kildorrery provided the opposition and they, equally, were keen to give of their best. The Rovers boys took control very early on and in the first quarter laid siege to the Kildorrery goal. Unfortunately the only thing lacking in those opening minutes was a steadiness in front of goal and going into the water break it was all even with no scores on the board. In the second quarter they continued in the same vein, this time though the scores began to come. The back- line were on top of things with Cathal Barry solid in goals, Jack Lynch controlling the square and David Dixon and Eoghan Buckley mopping up around their areas. The half back line were taking balls from the air with Éanna Lyons and James Finn striding out time after time ably assisted by Con McCormack. The midfield of Shane O’Dowd and Garry Quirke worked tirelessly for the team operating from 45 to 45 and beyond while the half forwards Matthew Swalbe O’Sullivan and James Larkin in tandem with Darragh O’Farrell at Centre Forward put in a strong shift. Denis Fitzgerald gave the Kildorrery defence a difficult time with other forwards Michael Gubbins, Adam Kelleher, Owen Ryan and Jamie Walsh all playing their part in contributing to what the best football team performance of the year. A slight lead at half time was built upon in the second with Kildorrery, despite their best efforts, on the back foot. The game finished on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 2-6 to Kildorrery’s 1-1. UNDER 11s MEET NEMO.
The under 11 boys were at home to our neighbours Watergrasshill for hurling on Saturday last in Pynes. We divided into two teams and played two very close typical ‘Derby’ matches in soft conditions . Great displays by all the lads. Our last game of the season is at home on Saturday next November the 6th at 10am to Nemo Rangers in hurling.
REBEL OG UNDER 18 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
We played Aghada away in quarter final of this competition last Tuesday night. It was a breezy night under the lights in Aghada which don't help either team. We started well with some good scores from Edmond Cashman and then a goal from Edmond. The half time score was 1-12 to 0-6. The lads hurled very well in the second half. We are to play the winners of Cobh v Carrigtwohill next but that pairing were due to play last weekend. However bad weather saw that fixture being cancelled.

NO LUCK IN SCOR MUNSTER FINAL.
WE took part in the Nuachleas (Novelty Act) section in the Munster GAA Scor Finals last Sunday in Hall ana Feile, Cashel. We won the County title back in January of 2020 but covid restrictions meant the Munster Final didn’t go ahead until now. It went well, our ‘Zooming To The Game’ but Newport from Tipperary, the reigning All Ireland Champions were declared the Winners and we had no issue with the result, it was an honour to represent Cork. They go forward to the All Ireland Final in Ballyhaunis in two weeks and will probably retain their title.

Congrats to St Itas of Gortroe on winning their first ever East Cork Junior Hurling title last Sunday. It was fitting that in the Jamsey Kelleher Park in Clonmult St Itas won the Cup named after Jamesy Kelleher, beating Erins Own in the Final. Best of luck in the County Championship. The St Ita’s captain is Cork hurler Seamie Harnedy so well done to him and his team mates on a historic breakthrough. One of the Club stalwarts is Irish Showband singer Art Supple who has been with the Club through good times and bad and he will really cherish this victory
