Four Hurling Teams in Action – Three Still involved.
On what was surely the busiest ever four days for our teams we had our three adult hurling teams all in championship action as well as our Minor team. After a great game in Pairc Ui Rinn on Monday night the Minors lost to Glen Rovers. At Kildorrery on Sunday our Senior were pipped by Mallow in our third Round Robin game but still qualify for the Quarter Final. On Sunday morning the C grade hurlers had a good win. On Saturday in Ballyhooley the under 13 hurlers lost the Rebel Og League Final to Ballyhea. The weekend got off to a great start when Damien Buckley with a last gasp free pointed the Junior B hurlers into the semi final.

JUNIOR BHC v Killeagh.
We went to Rostellan on Friday night for our Junior B Quarter Final game v Killeagh which was played under lights. We got a great win at the end of a splendid game. In fairness a victory looked unlikely early on as Killeagh led by 6 points to 1 after ten minutes. In fairness to our lads we gradually got to grips with the game. The defence tightened up -the rearguard of Ben, Seamus, Adrian and Jack excelled while our forwards began to find their range also. On several occasions we came within a point or two of Killeagh but time and time again they went ahead . A Seanie Knox goal was a huge score for us and gave the team a mighty boost. The second half was tit for tat as twice Killeagh forged ahead by two points but we pegged them back. The game was in the 64th minute with the sides level and extra time seemed likely. From long range Damien Buckley sent a free straight and true between the posts and amazingly we were ahead for the very first time. It seemed as if Ref Willi Wallis would give Killeagh one more chance but we won the puckout- game over and we won by a point , 1 12 to 0 14. What agame and what a finish. Well done lads. On Sunday week we face Aghada in the semi final. SENIOR HURLING v MALLOW.
It was gloriously warm afternoon in Kildorrery when the crowds gathered for the contest between ourselves and mallow. With the Round Robin System now in it’s second year the calculators were in action even before the sliotar was thrown in. If we won we were into the semi final or if we lost by less than twelve points we were still in contention. After two good wins against Ballyhea and Ballymartle many were expecting a victory for us. By the time the second water break came things looked a lot different. At one stage we were nine points down and very shaky. In fairness the team showed fierce determination in the last quarter and got right back into the contest. We began to dominate and the points came. We had it down to a single point with a few minutes to go and had a great goal chance. Mallow made it a two point margin winning by 3 9 to 0 16. Because Ballyhea and Ballynmartle drew Malow are also into the quarter finals. We meet Blarney and mallow meet Newcestown, both games will be in Pairc Ui Rin n on Saturday week. It was a tough one but we are still there. Under the new three-game group system every point is vital as we saw teams that had won two game in Cork, Galway and Clare losing their third game last week and completely exiting their Championship. Team v Mallow C.Hogan, T O Sullivan, J Pratt Jordan Mannix, P O Flynn, E Roche 0 1, S O Connor 0 1 , R Prendergast, C O Connor 0 2, D Dooley, J. MINOR FINAL.
Our Minor Hurlers took on Glen Rovers on Monday night in Pairc Ui Rinn in the Rebel Og Premier 1 Championship Final. We defeated Na Piarsaigh and Blackrock in the Round Robin series and lost to the Barrs before defeating Ballincollig in the semi final. Last week our hopes received a major blow when our talisman Cillian Tobin picked up a very serious ankle injury in training. Cillian has been an outstanding player with this group of lads since under 12 level and of course also with Cork. He did come on for a period in the second half but had to go off again. The game itself was a great contest. The Glen scored two goals and we raised no green flag. At times the Blackpool side looked as if they’d pull away but our lads kept hurling for the hour. We brought the deficit down to just four points twice but just couldn’t get in for a vital goal and Glen Rovers won by 2 15 to 0 13. It was a terribly disappointing night for this team and their mentors and parents too. I can safely say that for the last five years at under 12,13,14,15,16 and at under 17 this season, no team has given such wonderful displays of hurling, year after year, as this bunch of lads. They played at Premier 1 level all along the way and were up there with the very best teams in Cork City and County. They have reached so many Finals yet won very little but while winning is great it’s been so brilliant to follow the development and improvement in the hurling of these guys. Lads ye are a credit to our Club , to yere families, schools and parish. They were in tears on Tuesday night as they stood in a circle in the corner of the field at Pairc Ui Rinn and I know they have resolved to keep hurling and keep learning and keep enjoying our great game. Thanks to the huge crowd of supporters we had on Tuesday night – by far the biggest support of the four teams involved on the night. JUNIOR FOOTBALL FINAL
On Sunday next we contest the East Cork Junior A grade Football championship Final. It’s a huge achievement to get to this final. Two years ago we won the B Grade championship when we defeated Ballinacurra in the Final. Due to covid we played very little football in 2020 so this years progress has been really phenomenal.
Football in the Bride Rovers Club.
When Gaelic games were first played on an organized basis in the Rathcormac/Bartlemy area in the 18880’s both football and hurling were of equal importance. After the ‘Parnell Spilt’ three different and independent ‘County Boards’ operated in Cork. Rathcormac won the O Brien Board Senior Championship in 1889, defeating Dromtarriffe by 3 points to nil in the Final. The Bride Rovers Club was formed in 1928 and though the Club fielded a Junior Football team it met with little success. After the Bartlemy Junior football team were defeted by Midletion on a scoreline of 6 8 to 0 5 in the 1951 East Cork Championship the Club put forward a Motion, which was carried, proposing a Junior B Grade Football championship in East Cork. Thirty years elapsed before Bride Rovers finally won that Junior B championship when a Tom Kearney captained team defeated Youghal in the 1981 final. We fielded an A grade team for a few years before reverting to B again. After the B Grade double was won in 1993 we went up A grade again .Having lost two A Grade football Finals to Erins Own we finally made the breakthrough in 2004 when winning the title for the first time, defeating Fr O Neills in the Final. In 2007 we captured the Jim Ryan Cup for the second time with a victory over Carrigtwohill. Since 2007 we have been ‘up and down’ between A and B grade with our most recent success coming in September of 2019 when we defeated Ballinacurra in the B Grade final in Dungourney. We were beaten by Midleton in our opening game this season but then defeated Erins Own, Fr O Neills, Carrigtwohill and Lisgoold to reach the Final. Our opponents are Cobh who have been an improving football side in recent years and were in the A Grade Final just two years ago. Fair play to Vincent, Batt, Anhony, Maurice and Jammie for the work they have done with the Football team this year The Final is on in Carrignavar on Sunday at 3pm, go for it lads.
JUNIOR C HURLING.
Bride Rovers 4 12 Lisgoold 3 12. On Sunday morning last in Pairc na Bride close on two hundred people were in attendance to see our third hurling XV take on Lisgoold’s second team. It was a good lively contest where ‘rolling back the years’ was the theme for so many players. We had a few veterans like Jerome, Terry, Dinny, Mark and James playing well. The younger brigade like Leon, Craig, Colm and Podge were also to the fore. We led by 2 5 to 1 5 at half time. Lisgoold come into the game in the second half with two goals from Maurice O Connell . Our lads kept hurling away and we won by a margin of a goal, 4 12 to 3 12. Team Daniel Lane, Mark O Connell, Damien Healy, Andy O Regan, Maurice Dooley, James Murphy, Craig O Callaghan, Terry Broderick, Alan Barry, Colm Howard, Stephen Hackett, Leon O Flynn, Dinny Fitzgerald, Jerome O Driscoll, Brian Collins. Subs Podge Noonan and Paddy Croke.
UNDER 7’S IN PAIRC UI CHAOIMH
Our U7’s were back in action last weekend, 24 eager players made the trip up to the Astro turf next to Pairc Ui Chaoimh. We had 4 teams and they played 3 games each. Teams from Courcey Rovers, Fr O’Neills, Churchtown/Liscarrol, Kilbrittan and Kilmeen were also in attendance for what was a great morning’s hurling. Our lads were competitive in their games and continue to show improvement week on week, some great skills, passing, tackling and goal scoring was displayed by our young boys.
A big ‘thank you’ to all the mentors, parents, families for the great support in the grounds and making the morning a special one for the boys.
UNDER 11.
Bride Rovers under 11 boys were at home to Inniscarra for football on Saturday last The lads were divided into teams and played 2 very close games. With great levels of teamwork and skills on show we had two very competitive contests. We are due to play hurling this weekend but haven't a game confirmed yet.
Under 13’s in League Final.
Rebel Og North final: Bride Rovers 1-7 Ballyhea 1-12. The Under 13s played their final hurling game of the season which ended in a loss to a strong Ballyhea side. The match started well for Bríde Rovers with the boys taking an early 5 point lead. Their north Cork opposition were on the back foot until well into the second quarter when a goal got Ballyhea back into the match. There were 2 points in it at half time with Ballyhea edging it. The second half was a similarly tight encounter, although Bride Rovers, despite having parity in possession, found it hard to get the scores they needed to keep in touch. Ballyhea eventually got over the line leaving the Rovers’ boys disappointed but satisfied that they had given their all in what was a close encounter. The boys learned a lot from the game which will stand to them in the years ahead. Next up is a football challenge match against Lisgoold on Tuesday evening in Pynes in preparation for their Shield final on Saturday week. Bride Rovers U13s panel: Owen Ryan, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, David Dixon, Éanna Lyons, Jack Lynch, James Larkin, Garry Quirke, James Finn, Matthew O Sullivan, Shane O Dowd (Capt.), Darragh O Farrell, Adam Kelleher, Denis Fitzgerald, Matthew Kenny, Con McCormack, Michael Gubbins, Jamie Kennedy, Michael Cosgrove, Adam Murphy Fitzgibbon.

HARD LUCK ON SARS IN GALWAY.
Former All Ireland Club Champions Saarsfields of Galway are out of their County Championship for 2021. Like ourselves they had two wins in the first two Round Robin Games, beating Oran/Maree and Tommy Larkins. Last Sunday they faced Loughrea and even if Sarsfields lost by less than 5 points they were still through. In the 64th minute of the game they were six points down when they were awarded a penalty. A goal would see them into the knock out stages but didn’t Loughrea keeper Gearoid Loughnane save it and Sars were gone for this year. Athenry who have won 3 All Ireland Club titles are also out of the Galway SHC.
