Footballers in East Cork Final..

Another hectic week of action in both codes, in Championship, League and tournament saw some great results. The under 11’s, 12’s and 13’s all had superb wins. Our Junior Footballers have reached the East Cork Final for the first time sine 2007. Our Junior C Hurlers were playing a mighty game in Ballynoe on Sunday night under lights when an injury to Dave Burke caused the contest to be halted. Thankfully Dave’s injury is not as serious as it initially looked. The coming weekend sees the Under 12 team in League action, the Minor Hurlers in the County semi final and the under 14 hurlers participating in the annual Theresa Walsh Memorial Tournament and the Junior B hurlers take on Sars.

Jerard Kenny Memorial Shield.

Our under11 boys played the final of the Jerard Kenny Memorial  Shield on Friday evening in Pairc na Bride. On a beautiful evening Cappoquin provided the opposition for the annual game. The lads were all super excited to be playing for the shield and the intensity in training had lifted in training in the weeks coming up to the match. This excitement didn't seem to effect the lads though as from the minute referee Ryan O 'Callaghan threw in the ball the lads tore into the game. From Zach in goals all the way up to our full forward line of Daniel, Fionn C and David every single boy played his heart out. The half back line of Nathan, Cody and Cathal O B were outstanding and any ball that went past them was dealt with excellently by the fullback line of Jack Cathal M and Elliot. The 2 Sean's in midfield provided the link to the forwards with great passing and workrate. Our half forward line of Fionn L Cormac and Liam worked their socks off and Aidan and Alex came on to add to a great performance.  Our Captain on the day was Sam Kearney who unfortunately was in a cast and couldn't play but drove the lads on from the side-line. Thanks to Cappoquin for making the trip up for the game. Thanks to Ryan for reffing the match. Thanks to Mike and Margaret Kenny family for presenting the Shield to Sam. The lads also got their first rendition of Bride Rovers Abù from John Arnold (hopefully the first of many!) Thanks to Mark, Ken and Lisa our officers. Thanks to Marie and Triona for the party bags and flowers. Panel Sam Kearney (Captain)  Zach Morrissey, Jack o Donovan,  Cathal Murphy,  Elliot Martin,  Nathan Cronin, Cody Scanlan, Cathal o Brien, Sean Healy,  Sean Finn, Liam Carr, Cormac Lyons Fionn Lynch, Daniel Dorgan, Fionn Collins, David Ahern,  Alex Kulyk,  Aiden Maher.

Under 6 Hurlers in the Hill.

Our under 6 hurlers made the short journey to the Felix Sarsfield Memorial park in Watergrasshill on Saturday morning last to take part in a Blitz. Ourselves and Watergrasshill had four teams each. It was great morning’s hurling, what a pleasure to watch these young lads as they hurled with great enthusiasm. In games like these goals, points, winning or losing are terms not used at all. No, it’s all about having fun, making friends and learning the skills of our National game. Thanks to the Watergrasshill Club for organising the competition and well done to all who participated.

MINORS IN COUNTY SEMI FINAL.

Our Minor Hurlers are back in action on Saturday next October the 2nd in the County Premier 1 Hurling Championship semi final. Last year we reached the under 126 Final but lost out to Midleton. Ballincollig are our opposition on Saturday as we strive to reach the Minor Final..   The game is fixed for our home venue Pairc na Bride at 2 0o clock. Ballincollig have powered through their section of the championship and are a class team. Injuries may deprive us of one or two players but this bunch of lads are a great team and will give of their very best. Go for it lads. Glen Rovers and the Barrs are in the other semi final.

UNDER 13’s IN LEAGUE FINALThe under13s played their North Board semi-final on Saturday last against a strong Kilshannig outfit. As Group winners we had home advantage and kicked into a strong early lead through some impressive goal taking with Denis Fitzgerald leading the way.  The midfield, consisting of James Finn and Garry Quirke, worked tirelessly in that first half and worked the ball up to the forwards who kept Kilshannig on their toes. More scores followed in that first half with Shane O'Dowd, Matthew O'Sullivan and Matthew Kenny getting on the scoreboard while forwards Darragh O'Farrell, Adam Kelleher, Michael Gubbins and Michael Cosgrove played their part in putting the Kilshannig defence under pressure.  At half time the Rovers had a strong lead with forays by Jack Lynch into midfield, and long clearances from Jamie Walsh contributing to the impressive performance.  Goalkeeper, Owen Ryan, also led the way with some fine clearances and was resolute on his line.  The backs kicked into gear in the third quarter keeping Kilshannig at bay with backs David Dixon, Éanna Lyons, Eoghan Buckley, Con McCormack and James Larkin all working as a tight unit and harried any of the opposing forwards whenever they probed the Rovers' defence.  Kilshannig put the pressure on in the last quarter but the Rovers' boys remained firm and ultimately won by 7-11 to 4-13.  Onwards to the final against Ballyhea with the fixture yet to be confirmed.   Panel:  Owen Ryan, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, Con McCormack, Éanna Lyons, Jack Lynch, David Dixon, James Finn, Garry Quirke, Matthew O'Sullivan, Shane O'Dowd, Darragh O'Farrell, Adam Kelleher, Denis Fitzgerald, Michael Gubbins, James Larkin, Matthew Kenny, Michael Cosgrove. We had a useful practise game against Lisgoold at home on Monday night.

UNDER 12’s WIN CO. LEAGUE TITLE.

Bride Rovers U12 Green team travelled to Mayfield GAA Complex on Saturday afternoon last for the Division 2 League Final against Glen Rovers. There was a large Rovers following at the game which was played in ideal weather conditions on a fine Autumn afternoon.

Our lads knew this would be tough as the Glen bet us earlier in the year but they were up for the challenge this time around. We started  showing great intent from the off with Micheal opening up the Glen defence not once but twice in the first five minutes for two great goals. This gave the lads the start that they wanted and these goals were followed by a brace of scores from Finn who was to add 1-03 to the score line before the half time whistle. We led by 3-03 to 0-03 at the short whistle. The Glen came out at the start of the second half and quickly added 1 1. This gave them a lift and they had a purple patch where they had plenty of possession but the Rovers defence had the answer with heroic defending by Donagh and Oliver and Ciaran making sure that the green flag wasn’t waved again. With Calum, Cathal and Danny taking control of the half back line and Tadhg and Finn winning the battle in midfield, the tide turned quickly and the Rovers started to gain the upper hand. Up front Micheal was leading the line with Mark and Dylan working the wings and the inside forwards of Bobby and Nathan sniping at every opportunity. The introduction of Darren, Sebastian, Eoin, John and Euan freshened up the Rovers with Darren hitting the net late on for a fine Rovers victory on a score line of 4-08 to 1-05. There is no doubt these boys will continue to improve and work hard for one another over the years to come and hopefully they will have further success along the way. After the final whistle, the presentation of the Cup was made to Cathal who was captain on the day and was accompanied by the ever present number one mascot Rhian Sommers.

The panel and scorers was: Ciaran Donovan, Oliver Harris, Donagh Hurley, Danny Walsh, Cathal Barry, Calum Sommers, Finn O'Driscoll (1-07), Tadhg Cronin, Mark Hynes, Micheal Walsh (2-01), Dylan Keating, Bobby Sweeney, Nathan Cahill, Darren Kearney (1-0), Sebastian Byrd, Eoin Morey, John Noonan, Euan Keating, Jeff O'Connell, Daniel Gubbins, Evan Quaine, Luke Murphy, Shane Mc Carthy, Shane Drinan, Colm O'Dowd

The last game of the u12 campaign for 2021 will be played this weekend when the Gold team head to Carrigtwohill for the Football semi-finals and finals.

FOOTBALLERS MIGHTY WIN.

Bride Rovers Junior A football team have reached the East Cork Final for the first time in many years with their last appearance having been in 2007. They achieved this by overcoming Lisgoold on Sunday afternoon last at a wet and windy Dungourney pitch which was in excellent condition considering the weather conditions. The Rovers played with the wind at their backs for the first half and started brightly opening up a three point lead in the early minutes however Lisgoold settled into their stride and pulled the scores level after 15 minutes. Both sides traded points with scoring difficult in the challenging conditions to leave the Rovers with the slenderest of half time leads on 0-06  to 0-05. The second half was a different story with early goals from Conor and DJ within two minutes of the start giving the lads a lead that they never relinquished. The lads played some fabulous football over the 60 minutes and ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-08. They will now go onto meet Cobh in the East Cork final which is fixed for Sunday 17th October at 3pm in Carrignabhfear

Cobh will be seen as favourites in this one having been at the business end of the East Cork Football Championship for the past few years but no doubt the lads will give it their all in the final. The panel on Sunday was Stephen Glasgow, Jordan Mannix, Damien Buckley, Jamie Barry, Seamus Ahern, Paul Larkin, Cian Howard, John O'Sullivan, Jack O'Connor, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Edmund Cashman, Matthew Quinn, Shane Walsh, Eoin Roche, Jason Mannix, Liam Forde, Kieran Kearney, Tom Murray, Ryan Prendergast, Shane O'Connor, Cian Hogan, Daniel Dooley, DJ Cahill, Conor Barry, Brian Roche and William Finnegan.

East Cork Junior C Hurling Championship.

On Sunday night last as the rain had ceased we travelled to Pairc Naomh Caitrionaigh in Ballynoe to take on the home team in the first Round Robing game in the Junior C HC. It was the third XV of both teams that lined out for the start with Youghal’s Jim Daly as ref. It was a very lively game with some great point scoring and wonderful hooking and blocking.  We led by  two points at half time. The margin was down to one early in the second half when Dave Burke received a back injury. It looked as if it could be a very serious situation. Medical help was available on the pitch but it was decided to summon an ambulance to take Dave to hospital as a precaution. The St Catherines Club were outstanding in providing assistance on the night and we thank all involved for their help. It was long wait but many players and Club members remained at the scene until Dave was taken to CUH.  Luckily the injury was not as severe as first thought and Dave has been released from Hospital. We all wish him a very speedy recovery to full health. Our panel on last Sunday night was; D Lane, M O'Connell, T Kearney, B Lahive, J Kearney, J Murphy, T Murray, K Hackett, J Tobin, T Broderick, D Burke, C Howard, C O'Callaghan, J O'Driscoll, A Barry, N O'Regan, L O'Flynn & M Dooley. We play Lisgoold in the Junior C championship on Sunday week at 12 noon in Rathcormac. Again many thanks to all who assisted on Sunday night

UNDER 9 HURLING.

The under9s hosted Shandrum last Saturday on a busy morning at Páirc Na Bride. This was a serious test of our lads from the all-hurling boys from North Cork and our lads had to fight tooth and nail in each of the three games played by 29 players over three teams. Shandrum are as good as our lads have come across and the boys had to dig deep and provide a work rate that we have seldom needed to compete this year. However, they were ready for the challenge and the boys really stepped up and played extremely well, winning some good ball and taking some good scores. Recent skills practiced such as hooking and blocking were needed and we weren't doing wanting on dedication, hard work and attitude. A great run out which will benefit the boys hugely.

Panel: Aidee Carr, Patrick O'Regan, Liam Harrington, Eoghan Croke, Jack Barry, Cian Barry, Cameron Hoare, Ryan Hogan, Scott Lynch, Conor Healy, Jack O'Donovan, Adam Hackett, Jack Fitzgerald, Luke Fitzgerald, Jack Roddis, James McDonnell,  Sean O'Dowd,  Matthew Finn, Alex Mccarthy,  James O'Leary,  Daniel Maher, Oisín Dorgan,  Conor Dorgan, Tommy Conway,  Noah Collins, Shane Brophy, Theo Byrd, Jack Gubbins, Harry Fitzgerald   Training: Hurling on Wednesday night at the main pitch at 6.30pm  Our next fixture: Next Saturday Oct 2nd  we play Midleton in Pynes Field at 10am.

OUR FIRST EVER EAST CORK JUNIOR A FOOTBALL FINAL.

Our victory over Lisgoold on Sunday last means we will contest the East Cork JAFC Final for the fifth time. We lost two to Erins Own before our initial win in 2004 when we beat Fr O Neills and then three years later we captured our second Jim Ryan Cup title when we defeated Carrigtwohill. It was on October 20th 2002 in Glenville that we contested our first ever Final. On an awful wet day we played a draw with Erins Own and because the winners were to play Adrigole in the Co JFC extra time was ordered.  A late goal from Pat Walsh meant a replay was needed as both sides had scored 2 9. Our team was R. Cahill, P. Barry, J. Murphy, P O Driscoll, Brian Murphy, Barry Murphy, Batt O Connell, Brendan Walsh 0 2, D Ryan, J O Driscoll 0 4, P Murphy, T Broderick 0 2, J O Dowd 1 0, S Ryan H. Kelleher, P Walsh 1 1, M Hogan, T Moloney. It was back to Glenville a week later but this time Erins Own won by 2 10 to 1 5.

BEST WISHES.

All in the Bride Rovers Club extend best wishes to the Barry brothers Tommy and Mick. Both are great Bride Rovers men and both former Club Treasurers and they have both had health setbacks in recent weeks, here’s hoping they’ll be in good form again very soon.

CONDOLENCES;

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Daly family of Rathoath Co.Meath on the death of Cathal.  The late Cathal was son of Pat and Brid and brother of  Mark and Brian. Pat Daly, a former Tallow hurler, is for many years on the GAA Staff in Croke park Daly and was so involved in all aspects of Hurling Development. May Cathal Rest in Peace.
