Hurlers play the Bouncers..
Our senior hurlers travelled to Knocklong on Sunday last to play Garryspillane in a senior hurling challenge match. Garryspillane are affectionately known as ‘The Bouncers’- they won the Limerick County Senior Hurling Championship in 2005 under the guidance of Clare’s Tony Considine. The pitch in Knocklong was in splendid order for this game and conditions were just perfect for good hurling.
The Rovers started the brighter and after eight minutes were leading 1-05 to 0-2, the goal coming from Eoin Roche. However by the first half water break Garryspillane had reduced the deficit to a mere two points with some fine scores. After the water break points were swapped by both sides with Garryspillane edging it slightly. The half time score was 1-12 apiece.
The Rovers made a few changes at the interval and started the second half very well. We got on top at midfield and the scores came. We had points from play from William Finnegan, Conor Barry and Edmond Cashman. By the water break we were in front again 1-18 to 1-16. We finished the game stronger with 2 more goals to win on a scoreline of 3-26 to 1-19. This was our final game in preparation for championship which starts against Ballyhea on Sunday 12th September in Castletownroche at 2pm. After that we have the Ballymartle game a week later. Our third Group game will come two weeks after that. WE need no reminding that Ballyhea defeated us over in Mallow in the SHC in 2019.
Thanks to Garryspillane for the game -we’ve had a few great games over the years with the Bouncers. They play South Liberties and Blackrock(Kilfinane) in their Limerick championship Group. Tonight Thursday sees South Liberties play Blackrock in the Gaelic Grounds in the first game in the Group. Originally there was a junior hurling team in Galbally and present limerick manager John Kiely played with them. When Galbally faded away as a hurling team they joined forces with Garryspillane and John Kiely was corner back on their history making 2005 team.
Junior Football.
Having lost our opening game to Midleton our junior footballers have defeated Erins Own, Fr O Neill and Carrigtwohill to qualify for the semi-final. Lisgoold pipped Carrignavar in the quarter final by a point and we will meet them in the semi-final with Cobh meeting Youghal in the other semi. As it stands the two semi-finals are down for decision on the weekend of September 26th/26th.
MATCH IN PAIRC NA BRIDE.
On Saturday week September 11th we host a real local derby game when Castlelyons and Watergrasshill play in the PIHC first round. The game is fixed for 4 o clock but may be brought forward on account of the All Ireland Final that evening which throws in at 5m
HOME ON HOLIDAYS.
Great to see Fr Seanie Barry home on his holidays from Africa. Another former hurler I met in Rathcormac last week was Tom ‘Bassy’ Hogan. Now living in England Tom was a native of Ballybrowney and was on our 1975 East Cork Junior B Grade Hurling Championship. Tom scored a hat-trick of goals in the semi-final win over Cobh in Riverstown on September 14th 1975 when we won by 4 10 to 3 9. Pat O Connor led the team to victory in the East Cork Final in Carrigtwohill against St Itas when we won by three points.
UNDER 16’s IN FINAL TONIGHT.
Our under 16 hurlers contest the Rebel Og League Final on tonight Thursday September the 2nd. This team have had a great run to reach the Final of the competition. They meet Kiltha Og (Dungourney/Castlemartyr) in the decider. This will be a tough contest being an East Cork ‘Derby Match’ Best of luck lads. The match is on in Rathcormac at 6.30pm.
LOTTO.
The numbers drawn last Tuesday night August 24th were 16, 19,22 and 27 and there was no jackpot winner. The Spot Prizes of €30 were won by Orla Dorgan Kildinan, Eleanor Kearney, Emma Roddis, Monica Barry Kildinan, and Sharon Beirne Castlelyons. Jackpot for Tuesday August 31st was €20,000. ‘Zac’ O Leary on TV.
Stephen O leary from Ballybrowney is currently enjoying a national profile, playing the part of Zac on RTE’s Fair City. Stephen is a very talented actor and has been involved in many previous productions on Screen and Stage. The character of Zac has emerged from the murky past with a shady background. Despite his semi-hidden ‘back story’ Zac is a bit of a loveable rogue! On Sunday night Zac, or Stephen, rekindled memories of his GAA days when seen on TV with a hurley in his hand, reminiscing with his ‘father’ about his hurling days. Fair City boss Brigie de Courcey probably wrote in this hurling narrative when she heard that Stephen was a handy hurler with Bride Rovers! He played underage with the Club as a forward. When we beat Setanta (Dripsey/ Ballinora combination) in the County Minor Hurling League Final in 2009 Stephen scored 1 2 in our 2 8 to 1 9 win, having come on as a sub! Stephen’s brother William was the team captain. In that Final played in December 2009 Bride Rovers lined out as follows; Maurice Dooley, John Kearney, Micheal Howard, William O Leary Captain, Jason Pratt, Ryan O Connor, Daniel Lane 0 4, Gerard Healy, Fergus Collins, Eoin Murphy, Jason Mannix 1 2, James O Sullivan. Subs Stephen O Leary 1 2, Barry Collins, Damien Buckley. Best of luck Stephen with your acting career from all in Bride Rovers.
LEAVING CERT RESULTS.
The leaving Cert Results are out this weekend so we hope all our Students do well. It’s been a strange form of Education with 18 months but hopefully things are getting back to normal.
FENCING.
The big Ball Stop nets were put in place in the Juvenile Pitch last week. The pitch is now looking magnificent and has been busy, busy every evening and weekend. With such large numbers of both boys and girls involved playing Gaelic games this extra pitch is a wonderful asset.
CAR BOOT SALE.
Thanks to all members who helped out last Sunday and in the days previous with the preparation for and running of the Car Boot Sale. There was a fine crowd in attendance on Sunday and the next car Boot Sale is on Sunday September 26th.
LADIES CLUB CLOTHES COLLECTION.
The Ladies Football and camogie Club have a Clothes collection at Rathcormac Hall on tomorrow night Friday September the 3rd from 7.30 until 8pm. All clothes are welcome but no duvets, pillows or cushions please.
TYRONE IN FINAL.
The first time I ever saw the Tyrone Senior football team play was in Croke Park on Sunday August 19th 1973 in the All Ireland semi Final. Cork had scored 5 goals in the first half against Kerry in the Munster Final in the old Athletic Grounds in Jimmy Barry Murphy’s fist Senior Football championship game. Cork went on to win that game by 5 12 to 1 15. Tyrone had stormed through Ulster and beaten Down in the Provincial Final., team captain Frank McGuigan was their star player. Scoring 5 goals once more Cork won by 5 10 to 2 4 but Billy Field of St Michael’s suffered a broken leg after only 6 minutes. Cork went on to beat Galway in the Final. The evening of that game our Minor hurlers St Bartholomew’s were going for a two in a row of East Cork minor titles but lost to St Catherine’s by 5 6 to 3 7. Tyrone and Mayo should be a great game and hopefully maybe at least 60,000 + will be at the match.
UNDER 9’ ON THE ROAD..
Our lads travelled up to picturesque Castletownroche on Saturday to take part in a five team Go Games blitz under the auspices of Rebel Og. The teams included Killavullen, Fermoy, Glanworth, Bride Rovers and the hosts. We had enough players for three teas and all three teams had a great day with some great skills on view. Our thanks to Castletownroche for hosting the blitz. It is just amazing to see the progress these young players have made over the last few months

Under 12’s ON THE GO.
The under 12 Green team had a busy week with a home game in Hurling against Passage on Monday evening and they were away to Milford in Tullylease last Friday night for a football game.
The Green team hosted Passage in the final game of the Hurling league on Monday evening in the Juvenile Pitch in Rathcormac. The game was end to end hurling for 60minutes with the lead changing hands numerous times over the hour. Passage opened the scoring with a goal and a point and it took our boys a little time to settle into the game. Some fine scoring from Micheal Walsh and Finn O'Driscoll throughout kept the Rovers ticking over on the scoreboard. However goals win games and with 5minutes remaining the lads were ahead by two points when Passage struck for a late goal and point to take a two point lead into the final minute. This was where ‘the fight to the end mentality’ that is synonymous with Rovers teams over the years kicked in and the sliotar was worked from defence up to the forwards where it was received by Mark Hynes who finished off a brilliant move with a well taken goal to give the Rovers a one point lead and a well deserved victory. The final score was Bride Rovers 1-14 to Passage 3--07. The lads are runners up in the league with two wins and one loss and should now be in position to contest the league playoffs. The Green team travelled to North Cork to the village of Tullylease on Friday night last for a football league game against Millford. Plenty green and white flags were to be seen as both Milford and Tullylease are on the Limerick border. The lads were dominant for the hour and ran out comfortable winners on the night. This team are in the Division 2 North league and their results have been very one sided to date winning their games by 20points or more on each occasion. The team and scorers on Friday night were: Eoin Morey, Nathan Cahill (0-01), Oliver Harris, Sebastian Byrd, Danny Walsh, Cathal Barry, Dylan Keating, Tadhg Cronin (0-01), Finn O'Driscoll (1-04), Ciaran Donovan (1-01), Micheal Walsh (3-02), Mark Hynes, Shane McCarthy, Donagh Hurley (2-01) and Robert Sweeney (0-01).
The Gold team have a busy week coming up with two games - the first is hurling at home against Carrigtwohill on Thursday followed by a football game at home against Kiltha Og on Saturday morning. The Green team are in action on Monday night next with a football league game at home against Durigale Gaels from Millstreet.
Under 11 Football.
The under 11 boys had a football blitz at home on Saturday. Over 90 children were involved from our own Club and our visitors St Catherines, Aghada, Killeagh, Lisgoold and St Colmans. Each team played three twenty minute minute games in very warm conditions. There were excellent performance by all involved.
Our next game is hurling away to Glanworth on tonight Thursday September the 2nd. A reminder that training will be continuing Saturday at 10 and Wednesday at 6:30.
MINOR HURLING.
We travelled to Newtonwshandrum last Wednesday for an under 17 hurling challenge match which was played under lights. We had played Newtown in Rathcormac earlier in the month and they beat us well so we knew it would be a tough game and it was. The North Cork side were leading at half time. Our lads fought hard in the second half and came out winners on a score-line of Newtown 1-11 Bride Rovers 0-15
Training continues on Wednesdays at 7.30 in the Main pitch and Friday at 7.30
Our Minor Premier 1 league/championship game vs Blackrock is fixed for Sat 18th September at 1pm in Church Road, Blackrock
RESULT; last night Wednesday our under 14 hurlers took on Na Piarsaigh in the Rebel Og League Final in Farranree. The match ended in a draw but after extra time we lost out by 2 points 1 17 to 3 6, hard luc lads but well done also.
