Munster Medals for Cillian and Adam..

Well done to Cillian Tobin and Adam Walsh on winning Munster Minor Hurling championship medals with Cork on Monday night. A crowd of 4000 were present in historic Semple Stadium on Monday evening last to see Cork capture the Munster MHC title for the first time since 2017. The Rebels captured their 34th Munster crown with an impressive win over Waterford. Having already accounted for Clare and Limerick much was expected of this team and in fairness they did not disappoint on the night   Back in 2017, when Cork last won Munster, the Roche brothers Brian and Eoin were on the side. On Monday night the Bride Rovers Club was so proud to see Cillian Tobin and Adam Walsh line out with Cork. Both lads played very well and got on the scoresheet. Well done Cillian and Adam and parents Ger, Rachel, Brendan and Arlene.  Cork won on a scoreline of 1 26 to 1 15 on a great night for Cork Hurling.

The Rebels are now in the Senior, under 20 and Minor All Ireland Hurling Finals which is a huge boost to Cork GAA.  Kilkenny beat Wexford by 1 15 to 2  10 in the Leinster Minor Final and now play Galway in the All Ireland semi final this coming weekend. The All Ireland Minor Final is scheduled for Saturday week August 21st the day before the Cork v Limerick Senior Final. It’s a pity we can’t have both Senior and Minor Finals on the one day. Double headers are now being allowed -Dublin v Mayo in both the men’s and ladies football on the one day. Even next Sunday we have Cork v Meath in the Senior Ladies semi final being played with Roscommon v Offaly in the Unser 20 Football Final. Hopes that we might get to have the Minor Final in Croke Park on Saturday 21st now seem dashed as Kerry v Tyrone are billed to play there that day in a rescheduled All Ireland Senior F semi final.  Maybe the GAA might fix the Minor Final as a curtain raiser to that game? We’ll have to wait and see but the important thing is that Cork are through to the Minor Final, well done again Cillian and Adam, everyone in Bride Rovers are so proud of ye both.  Congrats too to Barry Johnson who is a key member of Niall Furlong’s backroom team with this talented Minor squad. Cork’s last appearance in a Minor Final was in 2017 when Galway were the victors. Another ‘local’ connection is that selector Dave Dorgan is son of Kathleen Sheehan formerly of Ballinwilling, Bartlemy. Dave’s uncles Willie and Pat hurled with Bride Rovers

EAST CORK JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE.

We were visitors to Pairc Ui Chonaill in Cobh last Thursday night for a JHL game against the home side. Cobh got the opening point of the game but we responded with three white flags. We settled into a good rhythm then and after a few points to both teams Eddie Cashman finished off a well worked goal which saw several of the forwards involved in the build-up. At half time we were leading 1-10 to 5. The second half continued in the same way and we were well on top with a good spread of points scorers. Jesse O'Keeffe then broke through the Cobh defence to get our second goal and we were 10 points up. We had a big squad of players and had 8 different scorers on the night with the game finishing up 2-16 to 0-14

JUNIOR FOOTBALL QUARTER FINAL.

Our Junior A Footballers play the East Cork Quarter Final this coming Saturday night August 14th in Castlelyons. Our opponents will be Carrigtwohill who topped their Round Robin Group. We have played three games, losing to Midleton then defeating Erins Own and Fr O Neills. Those results see us a Group Runners up to Midleton. Carrigtwohill have been a force in East Cork Football in recent years contesting the Final two years ago. From having played no football championship game last year to reaching the quarter final this year is real progress. -go for it lads.

TICKETS.

Don’t mention the word Tickets over the next week or so. With an 80,000 + full house attendance All Ireland Hurling Final Tickets are normally as scarce as hen’s teeth. With only 40,000 allowed this year because of covid ‘twill be chaotic. What a glorious few weeks are in prospect for Cork GAA. The under 20 Hurling All Ireland Final Between Cokr and Galway is fixed for Semple Stadium in Thurles on next Tuesday night August 17th with a 7.30pm throw in. Such is the backlog from 2020 it’s only a few weeks ago since Cork won last year’s Title defeating Dublin in Nowlan Park. Good luck to Pat Ryan and his troops which includes our own Paddy O Flynn on the extended panel.

Lisgoold Abu.

They say patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait. Well for Lisgoold GAA Club the long, long wait is over. At Pairc Ui Rinn last Saturday they won the Cork County Junior A Grade Hurling Championship of 2020. It’s a brilliant feat for a team that never even reached an East Cork A Grade Final until last year. Covid delayed the completion of the 2020 Co JAHC until recent weeks. After a great win over Dromtarriffe in the Semi Final Lisgoold went into the County Final in confident mood. Glanworth’s Harbour Rovers were well in the game until the 40th minute when Lisgoold took over. They were ably led by their superb captain John Cronin. Overall Lisgoold displayed brilliant hurling and will be well in contention for honours in the County Intermediate Championship this year where Tracton, St Finbarrs and the losers of Russell Rovers and Castlemartyr are in their group. In recent year Lisgoold have produced several players with Cork at Minor, under21, under 20 and Intermediate level and they all shone last Saturday. It was an emotional and joyous day for the community of Lisgoold/Leamlara/Ballincurrig/ Doonen and Top Cross and they were worthy winners. Down the years they often had good teams but never reached their Final destination. Well done to all concerned with this great team. Noel O Riordan is a selector -his father Tom won East Cork JAHC medals with us in 1968 and 1969. Cathal Hickey and James O Driscoll also have links with our parish. Cathal’s great grandmother was Maria O Donovan from Ballinakilla while James’s grandfather was Dan Gubbins from Ballyroberts and his great grandfather was the famed Bartlemy Blacksmith Willie Roche. I joined the celebrations in Lisgoold for a while on Saturday night and it was great to be there. Every club deserves days like last Saturday.

UNDER 12 FOOTBALL

The Under 12 Football Leagues resumed this week with the Green team playing Fermoy in the first game of the phase two league. The boys travelled to Fermoy on Monday evening for this 15 a side game and were dominant throughout resulting in a very one sided scoreline of 6-20 to 0-01 point. The Rovers lads were up for this one from the throw-in and played some very entertaining flowing football over the hour and never let the workrate drop from start to finish. Even though the scoreline is one sided, the Rovers defence had to be strong throughout as Fermoy had plenty of possession and had numerous scoring chances where Eoin Morey in goals came to the Rovers rescue with some brilliant saves. The Full back line was well marshalled by Donagh Hurley with Euain O'Grady and Nathan Cahill solid in the corner back positions. The halfback line was solid as ever with Cathal Barry reading every ball at centre back and the wing backs of Dylan Keating and Ciaran Donovan ready and willing to attack when the opportunity arose. The midfield pairing of Finn O'Driscoll and Tadhg Cronin worked tirelessly for the hour supporting both defence and attack. While the defence were keeping Fermoy at bay, the forwards were taking every opportunity that came their way with a lively half forward line spear headed by Michael Walsh and supported on the wings by Darren (Dazzler) Kearney and Sebastian Byrd. The full forward line were seeing plenty of the ball with Mark Hynes showing great strength and leadership in the full forward position and well supported by Conn Nagle and Darragh Costigan in the corners. The team and scorers were Eoin Morey, Nathan Cahill(1-0), Donagh Hurley(0-01), Euain O'Grady, Dylan Keating (0-01), Cathal Barry, Ciaran Donovan (1-02), Finn O'Driscoll (1-06), Tadhg Cronin, Sebastian Byrd(0-01), Michael Walsh (1-08), Darren (Dazzler) Kearney (1-00), Darragh Costigan, Mark Hynes (1-01), Conn Nagle.

The U12 fixtures for the coming week are: U12 Hurling League - Green Team away to St. Colmans on Monday 16th next at 7pm in Shanagarry.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALLERS WIN.

The under 13 team were back in dual football and hurling action last weekend. Bride Rovers under13s started the second half of the season with a football match on Saturday 31 July against Kildorrery followed up by a hurling match against neighbours Castlelyons on Thursday 05 August.  The match against Kildorrery, away, proved to be a low scoring fixture with the Rovers' boys ultimately winning by 1-3 to 0-4.   We then played Castlelyons, at home in Pynes Field, and although the scoreline reflected what appeared to be a comfortable win, it wasn't before a good battle between two evenly matched sides.  A few goals in the first half had Castlelyons on the backfoot and some fine points in the second half sealed the win for the boys.  Final score Bride Rover 5-11 Castlelyons 2-5.  Panel:  Cathal Barry, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, David Dixon, Éanna Lyons, Jack Lynch, James Larkin, Shane O'Dowd, James Finn, Darragh O'Farrell, Matthew Kenny, Gary Quirke, Michael Cosgrove, Denis Fitzgerald, Matthew O Sullivan, Adam Murphy.

Next match is away to St Catherines in football on tonight Thursday 12th August with training continuing on Monday nights.

STAY SAFE.

A timely  reminder that as per all sporting organisations Covid Guidelines and  Government Regulations, all spectators and officials who are not involved directly with a match in Páirc Na Bride are urged to wear a face mask  while on the grounds. This is for your health and safety and the health and safety of those around you. The better we are at wearing masks for the foreseeable future, the more people who will be allowed to attend events including GAA matches over the coming weeks and months. We can see the situations re the Cork under 20 hurlers and Tyrone Senior Footballers recently so stay safe.
