Footballers win..

Our Junior A Football team travelled to Castlelyons on Friday night to play Fr O'Neills in the final game of the round robin stage of this year's championship.Fr O'Neills had little to play for having lost their opening two games and the Rovers lads knew that they had to win this one to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. We had lost to Midleton but defeated Erins Own.

The Rovers commenced the game with intent and led from start to finish. The opening goal came on 3 minutes from William Finnegan and was followed with two more goals in the first quarter from Brian Roche to leave the scores at 3-03 to 0-01 point at the first water break. The lads continued to pile the pressure on in the first half and another goal this time from Daniel Dooley gave the Rover a comfortable half time lead of 4-06 to 0-02 points. The second half was played in a similar fashion to the first with Tom Murray netting the final goal for Bride Rovers early in the second half. The final score was Bride Rovers 5-11 to Fr. O'Neills 1-05. Qualification for the quarter final will depend on the result of the final game between Midleton and Erins Own and whatever the outcome is, the lads can hold their heads high after being drawn in a group where very few gave them any hope of progressing to the quarter finals. That Erins v Midleton game was down for decision last night. (Late News)

Midleton defeated Erins Own by 1-7 to 0-8 which means we are through to the quarter final against Carrigtwohill.

The team and scorers were: Stephen Glasgow, Jordan Mannix, Shane Walsh, Eoin Roche, Jason Mannix (Capt), Liam Forde (0-01), Tom Murray (1-0), Shane O'Connor, Cian Hogan, Daniel Dooley (1-01), DJ Cahill (0-02), Conor Barry (0-03), Brian Roche (2-01), William Finnegan (1-01), Damien Buckley (0-01), Jamie Barry, Seamus Ahern, Kieran Kearney, Paul Larkin, Oisin Roche, Patrick O'Flynn (0-01), John O'Sullivan, Edmund Cashman, Jack O'Connor, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Matthew Quinn, Cian Howard, Colm Howard, Ciaran Crowley.

Brilliant Cul Camp.

'Outstanding',  'top class'  'best ever', 'super' and 'marvellous' were just some of the comments I heard from the parents and guardians of the 200 youngsters who attended our Kelloggs Cul Camp last week. It was just a wonderful week. The weather was great, a bit cooler than the heat wave of the previous week and we only got a few squibs of rain over the five days. Truly it was a sight to behold each day from ten o clock until two in the afternoon. This year because of covid our numbers were limited and the Rules and Regulations which had to be observed were  very strict. Many of our coaches and helpers took a week off work to help out and their contribution to the Bride Rovers Club. Many of these coaches also help out with the Juvenile Academy week in, week out.  Sincere thanks to each and everyone who helped out in any way.  Denis, John, Martin and Paddy had the grounds looking magnificent, thanks lads. Gaelic games are the life blood of our sporting nation and the work being done with our youth is just superb. A former Cork hurler was in conversation with a Bride Rovers Club member in Thurles at the Cork v Dublin game Saturday night and was loud in praise of our under age structures. Last week's Cul camp was a further example of that work.

SENIOR HURLERS RETAIN TONY WALSH CUP.

Bride Rovers Senior Hurlers successfully defended the Tony Walsh Memorial Cup with a five point win over Ballyduff on Sunday last at Pairc Na Bríde.  Having won the cup in 2019 and with the tournament not played in 2020 due to Covid, it was great to win this cup for a second time. Ballyduff got off to a quick start with 2 points from play by Tireoghain Flynn and Seamus Hannon. Points from Cian O Connor and Brian Roche had the game level at 0-2 apiece. The Rovers were slow to settle in the opening half as Ballyduff notched up 3 points without reply. William Finnegan got the Rovers third point but another point from Ballyduff had them in front 0-6 to 0-3 at the first water break. A long range pointed free from Paddy O’Flynn and a point from Conor Barry reduced the deficit to a single point. The half finished with a flurry of points, Ballyduff added three more to their tally while Conor Barry and a wonderful individual effort by corner back Kieran Kearney left the half time score 0-09 to 0-07 in favour of Ballyduff.

The Rovers were back on level terms within minutes of the start of the second half with points from Brian Roche and another pointed free from Paddy O Flynn. The Rovers defence in front of Cian Hogan were beginning to get on top with Tadhg O Sullivan and Jordan Mannix solid in the full back line. Shane O Conner was making some great runs forward and won some scoreable frees while Eoin Roche on the other wing was playing some great ball into the forwards.A point from the visitors was followed by 5 unanswered points from the Rovers, scored by Conor Barry (3) and Brian Roche (2), this had the Rovers in front 0-14 to 0-10 at the 2nd water break.

DJ Cahill was introduced and following some great work he scored a great point. Conor Barry added another before our roaming corner back Kieran Kearney got his second of the game. A goal from Ballyduff reduced our lead but in the last few minutes we outscored Tallow 3 points to 2 to claim an important victory.  Final score Bride Rovers 0-20 Ballyduff 1-12.

Following the game, club Chairman Gerard Lane presented the cup to captain of the day Cian O Connor in the presence of Tony Walsh’s wife and family. Cian thanked the Walsh family and called for three cheers for Ballyduff.  Thanks to Nathan Wall the referee and a special word of thanks to Ballyduff for accepting the invitation to come to Rathcormac.

Owenie Mc Auliffe RIP.

It was with a great sense of sadness that we heard on Sunday of the death of Owenie McAuliffe of Glanworth. A true Gael Owenie has given a lifetime of service to the GAA. As a coach/trainer to Cork Minor and under 21 teams Owenie's record will never be surpassed. He was involved with seven Rebel teams which won All Ireland titles in the 1960's and 1970's. Players like Declan Barron, Jimmy Barry Murphy and Tadhg Murphy were all products of those great teams.  Owenie had a great brain for tactics and making vital changed on the line when needed. He played both hurling and football with Cork. He toured in America with the Cork Senior Hurling team of Christy Ring and his team mates and captained the Cork Junior Football team that won the All Ireland in 1955. He was instrumental in nurturing the Golden Era of Minor football with the Glanworth side, St. Dominic's and served in many positions at Club, Divisional and County level. In 1981 when Bride Rovers B Grade football team had a one point win over Ballinacurra in the championship first round in Lisgoold Owenie was asked to help out with the team. Selectors Tom N Barry and Pat O Connor along with Owenie helped that team to win our first ever B Grade football Championship. Ever since Owenie has had a keen interest in the fortunes of our Club. To meet Owenie was a great experience as his knowledge of Gaelic games and the GAA itself was encyclopaedic. May he rest in peace.  He has run the race and fought the good fight'.

REBEL OG UNDER 12 HURLING.

The Under 12 hurling leagues resumed this week with the Green team having a challenging opening game at home against Glen Rovers. The lads played brilliantly for the hour and were competitive in all positions but came out the wrong side of the result with the Glen finding the net more often than our lads. There will be a slow ramp up of the leagues for the Under 12s over the coming weeks to accommodate holiday season with one team a week out rather than having both teams out and training will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

BIG WEEKEND FOR CORK HURLING.

Well this coming weekend will be a huge one for Cork hurling teams. It had been planned that three Rebel teams - Under 20, Senior and Minor, would all see Championship action on Saturday, Sunday and Monday respectively . Things have changed however and covid has caused the postponement of the Under 20 All Ireland Hurling Final pencilled in for Saturday. Cork were to have met Leinster champions Galway in the decider but this game is now gone. Still for the Seniors and Minors it's make or break with no back doors still open. It's Cork v Kilkenny in the Senior All Ireland semi final on Sunday in Croke Park. If 80,000 tickets were on sale for this tie it would have the 'Full House' sign up but just 22,000 tickets are available. Cork over came the Dubs in Thurles last Saturday evening, doing enough to get through. One thing is certain Kilkenny will hold no fear for Cork on Sunday next. Rebels against Cats games down the years are usually great games so hopefully 'twill be the same on Sunday.

MUNSTER MINOR FINAL.

On Monday night next then Cork Minors (U17) will face Waterford in the Provincial Final in Thurles. Cork impressed in their games v Clare and Limerick but the Decies were very     strong against Tipperary. We wish Cillian Tobin and Adam Walsh all the best and the same to all the panel. Barry Johnson has a major input into the team also as a Skills Coach and no doubt Barry's own hurling prowess will come through with our young hurlers. Best of luck Cork.

FAREWELL JOE.

I attended my first Inter County Hurling game in 1972. That's 49 years ago and since then I've witnessed great games and saw fantastic hurlers with Cork, Tipp, Kilkenny, Offaly, Clare Waterford, Galway, Wexford, Limerick , Dublin, Laois and Antrim too. Kilkenny have had super teams in different eras, Clare had a wonderful team in the 1970's but were thwarted by the Cork 3 in a row side. Waterford have had fantastic teams with the last 15 years but with no All Ireland to their name.  Shefflin, DJ Carey, Nicky English, John Fenton, Tony Browne, Colm Honan,  Martin Storey, JBM, Joe Deane, Brian Murphy, Mullane, Joe Connolly and  Sean Foley were all superb. Yes I could list off maybe fifty hurlers whose performances live in my memory. Up with all of these and in my mind one of the greatest hurlers of all time was Joe Canning. Joe announced his retirement from Inter County hurling last week and the game of hurling has lost one of it's maestros. For the past fifteen years Joe has been so consistent. He won just 1 All Ireland but then medals and titles are no real measure of greatness. What I remember most about Joe was his ability, game after game, to consistently produce what I call a 'Wow' score -a piece of magic, a point thrown over his shoulder or struck on his knees or a sideline cut of brilliance. Once ever I met Joe. 'Twas at the All Ireland Ploughing Finals a few years back. Joe was with his family members in their Hurley Making Stand and was mobbed by youngsters. He has been a truly inspirational hurler for Galway and his Club Portumna. One of the true greats of our National game, thanks for the memories Joe.

FORTY YEARS AGO.

After winning four games in the 1981 East Cork Junior Hurling League hopes were high for a good run in the East Cork Championship.  We got a shock in Castlelyons on June 28th when St Catherines defeated us by 3 16 to 1 5. Catherines went on to defeat Dungourney in the East Cork Final , their first title since 1957. They went to the County final losing to Milford. Meanwhile a win over Fr O Neills qualified us for the League Quarter Final  against St Itas. On the first Sunday of August we met the Gortroe side in Midleton.. We were 4 points down t half time  1 5 to 1 1. Second half goals from Richie Cotter and Tom Mulcahy saw us advance to the semi-final on a scoreline of  3 8 to 1 9.
