Cool Camp..

After the heat-wave of last week it was back to lovely summer weather this week for eagerly awaited Cul Camp. The summer Cul Camp has become a feature of the Juvenile Club's activity in recent years. Last year due to the covid pandemic the camp was cancelled much to the disappointment of all concerned.. A few months back the fate of this years event was in the balance but thankfully it went ahead this week. It started on Monday morning last and continues until tomorrow Friday July 30th. This year the numbers attending were limited to 200 and we actually had a 'waiting list' in the event of cancellations. With the last three months Cul Camp Director Jerome O Driscoll in conjunction with the Juvenile Club Officers had made plans for this years event. A huge amount of organizational work had to be undertaken involving many hours of pre planning.

Thanks to the eight Club members who gave up a full week to help as the main coaches. As well then forty five others gave a day or two or three to help out. This voluntary effort is massive and thanks is due to each and every one who helped out. On Monday morning it was a sight to behold as 200 young boys and girls were brought to Pairc na Bride. The idea behind the Cul Camp concept is to teach the basics of hurling football, camogie and ladies football in a fun atmosphere. In fairness the young participants had games, tug o war, rounders, shouting competitions, hop skip and jump and a variety of other activities. Great credit to each and every one involved and thanks also for the cooperation of the parents. The young boys and girls really enjoyed their time at the pitch and that's what the GAA is all about.

In 1971 the Ciste na Banban pools were a major fundraiser for the Club with 152 members joined. Bride Rovers also took on the task of selling the Race Cards at Bartlemy Point to Point Races with Vice Chairman Jimmy Meade in charge. In April the hurlers played the home team in the semi final of the Whites Cross Tournament. A herd of cows and a bull were driven to the bottom of the field before the game commenced. We were down two points near the end but had the sliotar when Dave Ryan shouted the immortal phrase ' Mind the Bull' and the goalie had a quick backwards glance and we scored the winning goal! That was half a century ago but the Final v Erins Own is yet to be played! In the East Cork JAHC we defeated Fr O Neills by 5 15 to 2 3, our scorers were  Johnny Barry 2 1,  Frank Meade 2 1, Seanie Barry 0 7, John Meade 1 2, Sean Murphy 1 1 and Pat Sheehan 0 2. We drew with Killeagh 2 89 to 3 5 with Seanie Barry getting 2 4, Pat Sheehan 0 2, Frank Meade and Johnny Barry 0 1 each. In the replay we lost by a point 1 11 to 1 10 in controversial circumstances when Killeagh were awarded a goal though the Rovers back claimed it had gone wide and went in through a hole in te side of the netting.

ML O CONNOR MOTOR FACTORS EAST CORK JAFC.

Our  Junior A Football team travelled to Carrig Na bFhear on Thursday night of last week  to contest the second round of the East Cork A grade Championship against a highly fancied Erins Own side who last won the East Cork Championship in 2019. Having been defeated in the first round by Midleton, this was a do or die game for the lads knowing that anything less than a win would have ended their interest in this year's championship. The pitch was in excellent condition and with temperatures running at 24 degrees, this was going to be a test of endurance for the lads over the hour.

The game was played at a lively pace and the first half was very much end to end football. Erins Own opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from play and from there on it was very much score for score with the Rovers taking a lead of 1-05 to 0-05 into the half time break. The opening goal came from a well taken penalty by William Finnegan. The second half was played  in a similar fashion to the first with Erins Own getting the early scores and taking a one point lead into the second half water break.  The Rovers then came strongly into the game. We showed the greater hunger in the final quarter to run out winners on a score line 2-08 to 0-10 points. The second goal came from the boot of Conor Barry in the closing minutes.

This result gives the lads a chance of qualifying for the quarter finals and they will play Fr O'Neills this Friday night in the final game of the group stage. The match is at 7.45 with a venue still to be confirmed at the time of writing.

The team and scorers were: Stephen Glasgow, Jordan Mannix, Shane Walsh, Eoin Roche, Jason Mannix (Capt), Liam Forde, Tom Murray, Shane O'Connor, Cian Hogan (0-02), Daniel Dooley (0-01), DJ Cahill, Conor Barry (1-03), Brian Roche (0-01), William Finnegan (1-00), Damien Buckley (0-01), Jamie Barry, Seamus Ahern, Kieran Kearney, Paul Larkin, Oisin Roche, John O'Sullivan, Jack O'Connor, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Matthew Quinn, Cian Howard, Patrick O'Flynn, Ciaran Crowley.

MIXED WEEKEND FOR CORK.

On Friday night someone said you'd get odds of 20 to 1 for Cork to win the Double -Senior Hurling and Football All Ireland titles. By Saturday evening in Limerick it looked a good bet after the hurlers overcame Clare. All changed, utterly changed in Killarney on Sunday when the Kerry team blitzed the Rebels and the 'Double Dream' vanished. So now it's up to the Hurlers to keep the flag flying high. After the great win over the banner the Rebels were drawn v Dublin in next Saturday's Quarter Final. The game will be on in Thurles on Saturday evening whilst earlier in the day Waterford will face Tipperary in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Brian and Eoin Roche were called into the Cork Training Panel last week so we wish Cork all the best. In recent years the Rebels have met the Dubs on a number of occasions in the Qualifiers with Cork coming out on top on each occasion. This year however Dublin cant be taken for granted. The Cats beat them in the Leinster Final but Dublin had already beaten Galway.

REBEL OG under 18 HURLING LEAGUE

We travelled to Rostellan last Wednesday to take on Aghada in the U18 hurling league

With a good few players missing  because of Cork Minors, holidays and injuries  the Rovers team  still had a panel of 17  and being a savage warm evening we knew we would be up against a strong a physical Aghada team.  In fairness to  our lads they were super on the night winning on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-13 well done lads. Our next under 18 hurling league game is at  home to St Catherine's on Wednesday  of next week, August 4th

We played Newtownshandrum on Monday night in Rathcormac in a Minor ( u17) practise game. This was a good workout for the lads as again we had lads missing through injury and holidays  Our next championship game which is against Blackrock but it  is not fixed yet

JUNIOR GAME TONIGHT

Our third XV are in action in the East Cork JHL on tonight Thursday July 29th. The game is timed for 7.45 in Pairc na Bride.

"Lads would ye play for Dublin, we're stuck"

Back around 90 years ago Dublin were playing Waterford in the National Hurling League one Sunday in Croke Park. Amongst the attendance were three Corkmen, brothers Paddy and Billy Barry from Mondaniel, Rathcormac -formerly of Hightown, Bartlemy. Both were working in Dublin and playing club hurling with the Civil Service Club. With them was another Billy Barry, from Mallow. Well Dublin were short of players on the day and a Dublin selector came down along the sideline, spotted the three lads and within twenty minutes they were playing Senior Hurling for Dublin! Needless to say that was their first and last game with the Dubs!

UNDER 7's.

We started back playing games on Saturday 17th July we had our first hurling game at home against Nemo Rangers. On a very hot day our boys played very well against the city team. The training is helping the boys every week.  Their competitive nature is really beginning to show.

On Saturday 24th July we had a Football blitz in Glanmire with Glanmire and Eire Og taking part.. We've seen great battles in all the games and great scores are plentiful. All the boys are excited all this  week as we are holding the local Cul camps for seven days  and we are all really looking forward to it.

UNDER 11's BUSY.  The under 11 boys were at home to Cobh on Saturday for football.  Again holidays limited our numbers to 12. In very warm conditions it was a good performance by the lads. Training resumes on Wednesday  night of next week 4th Aug after the Cul camp break.

REBEL OG UNDER 16 HURLING LEAGUE.

Bride Rovers 2-18  Cobh 2-08.
Cobh came to Rathcormac last Friday to play our last league game and having won our three games to date we were hoping for a good display. We played some superb hurling in the first half. Great points from Louie. Ronan. Ciaran. Cormac & Kieran had us leading  by a margin of six points,  0  8 to  0  2 at the first water break.   In the second quarter Cobh came into the game and at the have time whistle we led by a slim margin of just two points, 11 to 1-6.
In the second half our backs were coping well with the Cobh  forwards.  Adam and Colin were playing super stuff.  Further scores came from Ryan, Cillian Ciaran Louie and Frank who came outfield for the second half.  Kamso has improved so much for a lad who only picked up a hurley a month ago.  Overall it was match where  we were always in control of on a very warm night in Rathcormac. The final score was 2-18 to 2-08
That’s our league campaign completed with 4 wins out of 4. Well done lads.
We await the semi final date and opponents Team. Frank. Adam. Colin. Cillian. Kieran. Cormac. Kamso. Ryan. Ronan. Ciaran. Louie. Unavailable on the night were Denis. Eldon. Darragh. We hope to play a few challenge games in the coming weeks.
