Club Notes - 2021-06-19 10:00:00

Games, games, games.

From a famine to a feast, truly it's been such a transformation since the 'white flag went off' and the 2021 season commenced. From Monday June 7th until last Monday night, June 14th I reckon that between Go Games, Rebel Og, East Cork and County we played around 19 games. Yes it's really hectic and with so many teams at Juvenile Level, adult level plus the ladies teams it's really all systems go but isn't it just brilliant? It's the same off the field with a very busy Executive meeting last Monday night. There was long Agenda but it went well. Our flagship team, the Senior Hurlers opened their RED FM SHL campaign with a heavy defeat away to St Finbarrs on Sunday while the Junior B team were pipped by Carrig in Pynes field on Monday night. The Minors had a great away win over Aghada. The Under 13's beat Killavullen, the under 15's lost to Fermoy while the under 16's beat Mallow. On Saturday the younger teams were home and away all over the County with Go Games at all age levels. A reminder to all patrons that just 100 people are permitted to attend games. The GAA and Govt . restrictions are still in place. Normally we'd be urging people to go to all our games but at this time we must still urge caution..

REDFM SHL

Bride Rovers senior hurlers suffered a heavy defeat in the opening round of the Red FM sponsored Cork County Senior Hurling League.

This division 1 B game took place in the glorious sunshine at Togher on Sunday last.

The Rovers started well and captain for the day, William Finnegan had the first score of the game but this was as good as it got for the Rovers. A Brian Cunningham pointed free followed by a quick goal had the Barr’s infant and they would go on to dominate proceedings. At the first water break we trailed 1-05 to0-3, Conor Barry pointing 2 frees. By the interval the Barr’s had added a second goal and led 2-11 to 0-7. Cian O Connor and Conor Barry been the Rovers scorers.

Into the second half and the Barr’s continued their scoring adding a further 2-07 to our 0-3. Final score: St. Finbarrs 4-18 Bride Rovers 0-10

JHL v Carrigtwohill in Pynes Field Monday June 14th

We started the game very well and Craig O Callaghan got our opening point. Carrig responded with two points before Cian Howard scored a wonderful goal to the top corner from 30 yards.

We traded points then for the rest of the half and with Damien being very accurate from frees we had a 2 point lead at half time.

Carrig took control from the next 15 minutes and took the lead by 1 point at the water break. Both teams traded points and two late long range frees from Shaun Knox weren't enough as Carrig held on for a 1 point win Final Score 1-15 to 19.   Team Shaun Knox (0-2f) Jacob Powell  Donnacha Carr Jack ConorJordan Mannix Liam Forde John O'Sullivan  Seamus Ahern Jason Pratt (0-3)

Under 13 Hurling. Bríde Rovers 3-10 Killavullen 0-2 - The under13 lads got their 2021 season off to a fine start in a home hurling match against Killavullen last Thursday night.  The boys started the first half playing towards the clubhouse against a stiff breeze and although controlling possession struggled to convert their dominance into scores.  That first half contained a suffocating presence from the Bríde Rovers’ backs who were then able to feed their midfield and forwards.   Killavullen contributed strongly in that first half in making the Rovers’ lads work for any scores they could come by. The second half continued in a similar fashion to the first albeit with one crucial difference our forwards were now able to utilise the breeze and convert their possession to make an impact on the scoreboard. They managed to rack up a number of good scores with the players working hard and playing well as a team.  Most encouraging was the support they gave to each other both vocally and in their work off the ball.  Killavullen worked hard also but the breeze ultimately sucked the energy from them with the Rovers winning comfortably in the end. Bríde Rovers panel: Owen Ryan, Eoghan Buckley, Jack Lynch, James Larkin, Éanna Lyons, Jamie Walsh, David Dixon, Denis Fitzgerald, James Finn, Adam Kelleher, Shane O’Dowd, Darragh O’Farrell (Capt), Garry Quirke, Michael Cosgrove, Matthew Kenny, Matthew O’Sullivan, Adam Murphy & Con McCormack.  Training continued on Monday in the Astro with a match v Ballycastle scheduled for tonight Thursday 17th Jun in Castletownroche at 7.45pm.

On Saturday morning, Blackrock welcomed 26 Bride Rovers under 7 hurlers  boys into their Church Road grounds for the first blitz of hurling for the team as it started off the “Go games” for the season.

Each team played 4 games of 10 minutes each and were playing 5 aside.

We saw great clashes, determination, scores and plenty of fun.  Well done to all the boys who played with plenty of heart and great to start the season with a good game of hurling.

We are playing St. Finbarrs in Football next Saturday in St Finbarr grounds.

Under 16 Hurling

Mallow 2-14 Bride Rovers 2-20
On a glorious Saturday afternoon we travelled to Mallow where it was  Great to see young lads back on the pitch playing the game they love. This year at U-16 level Clubs have to play only with boys born in 2005.
The game started fairly well for us with a goal from Cormac inside the first five minutes.   The game was hard and physical with all the boys standing up and been counted.  At half time we were up 1-10 to 0-07.
Second half Mallow started very well scoring 1-4 without reply.     Denis made a run up field and scored a great goal.   But Mallow responded immediately with a goal.   The score at the second water break was 2-13 to 2-14 in favour of Mallow.   We gathered the lads and told them to hurl like they can and go out and enjoy themselves.
Well it worked, it must have been holy water in their bottles!. Seven unanswered points from. Cillian,. Cormac Ryan., Kieran, Ronan, Denis and Ciaran all raising the white flag thanks to some pinpoint puck outs from Frank   Eldon, Adam and Darragh performing superbly in the backline A super result for the lads Thanks to all our support again it really helps when the lads are struggling.
