Good To Be Back as Summer Comes..
It's been a difficult few weeks lately what with horrendous weather and than another 'lock-down' but things are looking up now again. We're less than a month away from the Midsummer and the longest day of the year. From Monday week, June 7th, games at adult level can resume so some kind of normality will be restored. As if giving us a reminder that 'Covid hasn't gone away you know' we had to suspend all Club training and activities last week because of a number of cases in the community. It was wise decision as it's always better to err on the side of caution especially when dealing with an 'unknown' like covid. Thankfully we were in a position on Monday evening to give the 'green light' for the recommencement of all Club activities once more. It was a timely reminder to all of us t keep up our guard and continue to observe all the guidelines that are in place. Well done to our Club Officers and in particular Covid Officer Michael Carey who had a difficult situation to monitor and they also had to act swiftly in the good of the health of all our community. Weather wise it's hard to imagine we are heading for June-there wasn't much dust rising in any square anywhere last weekend but hopefully the warm days and balmy evenings are on the way. It's mighty to hear the clash of the ash and the thud of leather once more as Gaelic Games are back on al our agendas.
Playing Season.
From Monday week next, June 7th which is the June Bank Holiday Monday, games at Club Level for over 18's are permitted once more. It's been a long, long time without Club activity so it's great to have the season of 2021 commencing at last. For the time being all games, from underage up to and including all adult grades, will be played 'behind closed doors', in other words just the two teams, the referee and officials and team mentors will be allowed to attend. With increased levels of covid vaccination and hopefully, a decline in cases, we can be hopeful that maybe by July we will see crowds back at games once more.
BRIDE ROVERS WEEKLY LOTTO
Results from our Draw on Tues May 18th, the Jackpot was €20,000 and the 4 numbers drawn were 13, 19, 23 and 24 and there was no winner. JUVENILE TRAINING.
Training for the different Juvenile groups resumed on Tuesday night of this week and it's all systems go again. With so many teams playing hurling, football, camogie and ladies football it's a huge operation to get slots for each group each week and sometimes twice weekly. Great credit is due to Aiden Dorgan who sees after the Online Pitch and Astro Turf Booking System. It's a great method of ensuring the best use is made of the facilities available especially at this crazy busy time of year.
EYES DOWN, BINGO RESULTS.
Last Saturday night was our third Bingo Session. Michelle Barry did a mighty job calling the numbers combined with song, witty comments, birthday greetings, advertising and generally doing a tremendous amount to promote the Bride Rovers Club, well done Michelle. Well done also to Club Treasurer and Julianne who was filmed 'live' leaving the prize-winners hampers at their doorsteps.
Last Saturday night those online saw a magnificent short film where Club Chairman Ger Lane was seen going through all the facilities in Pairc na Bride. It was superb viewing and can be seen on the Bride Rovers website. The results of the Bingo were as follows
There was no winner of the Jackpot game so next week the Jackpot will be €350 on 33 calls. The Bingo will continue on next Saturday night May 29th at 8.30pm A bingo books cost €8 and it again promises to be a great night of family fun. All proceeds towards the club development. CLUB 100.
New Brochures and Application Forms for our Club 100 scheme have been printed and are now available. The Club 100 offers unique packages to those who wish to be involved. COUNTY LEAGUES.
Recently the County Board draft Masters Fixture Plan for the year was published. Because of the late start to the playing season the Leagues have been 'downsized' with much smaller groups and far fewer games to be played In the Hurling there are 8 Divisions in the League with 8 teams -two groups of 4, in each league. Based on our 2019 standing we are in Division 1, Group B along with St Finbarrs, Bishopstown and Midleton while in Div 1 A it's Sars, Newcestown, Glen Rovers and Blackrock.

DOWN MEMORY LANE
Since we first met Na Piarsaigh inside in Fermoy in our first ever Senior Championship meeting in 2004 we've had some great tussles with them. They beat us in 2004, in 20011 and again in 2012. We eventually had a very convincing win over the North-siders in Midleton in 2018. This was the report on the June 2012 game.
Our Senior Hurling team came up short in Cork on Saturday night in Round Two of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship. For the third time we suffered defeat at the hands of Na Piarsaigh in the 'backdoor' game. In our first ever Senior Game in 2004 the Northside team defeated us in Fermoy. Last year in the first round they repeated the dose and the same fate met us on Saturday night in Pairc Uí Rinn.
Saturday night's game was almost a carbon copy of the 2011 game. An early Na Piarsaigh goal by John Gardiner last year was the decisive score; on Saturday night it was Padraig Gould who raised the green flag. That goal stayed between us for most of the game, we narrowed the margin to just two points late on but Na Piarsaigh had the cushion of a three point winning margin in the end. Just as in our opening game against Erins Own we were well capable of winning the contest. We created plenty chances but having shot just four wides in our opening game our wides tally on Saturday was ten. It was a very disappointing result but
In fairness the team can be very proud of their heroic efforts on the night. When we were behind by 1 4 to 0 1 in the first half and by 1 9 to 0 6 in the second half we fought back gamely and got right into the game.
We started brightly with a Michael Collins point. Our defence seemed to be coping well but Gould's goal changed all that. The city side added four points before we came thundering back into the game. A David Burke point in between two Barry Johnson pointed frees left us 1 4 to 0 4 behind after twenty-two minutes. We had a great goal chance after Ml. Collins cut through but the ball was cleared. Barry and John Gardiner swapped points from frees to leave us 1 5 to 0 5 in arrears at the break. David Burke had our supporters in good voice on the restart with a great score. After this for some inexplicable reason it was the Piarsaighs who drove on with 4 unanswered points to go into a 1 9 to 0 6 lead. After this we improved all over the pitch the backs really tightened up and in general our hurling moved up a gear. WE had plenty possession but between the sixth and sixteenth minutes we had four wides in a row. A brace of points from Colm O Keeffe followed by a Daniel Dooley point brought us to within a goal of our opponents. Michael Collins brought the margin down to two. With Barry Murphy leading by example and Brian Murphy, Barry Johnson and Colm flying we attacked again and again but our finishing left us down.
As the game entered the last few minutes we were down three points again. Twice we had great goal chances but nothing came of them. We tried so hard to get an equalising score but time ran out after a great team effort. Well done to the eighteen players who played their part on the night. Twice now we have played with great heart and passion but have come away empty handed. All is not lost thankfully as we still have a chance to make an impression in this Championship.
