Cul Camp Dates..
Cul Camp dates for 2021 have been released. The Bride Rovers camp which will run over five days commences on July 26th which is the week leading into the August bank holiday weekend. There are major changes being implemented by the GAA which is making this years camp different from past camps. This years camp will be combined for boys and girls. Starting at 10am and finishing at 2pm. Restricted capacity will apply with a maximum of 200 participants and there are restrictions on coaches. We have got all the Rules and Regulations and these are currently being worked on by the club. Camp booking will open in the next week or so and ALL team managers will forward details of the online portal opening time in plenty of time. There will be no local booking. All arrangements, booking, everything will be handled centrally by Croke Park. So stay in contact with your team managers!!
ALL ACTIVITY CEASED.
Since last Monday May 17th th all Bride Rovers Club activity has stopped across all levels and age groups. This is due to the covid pandemic and cases in the locality. The situation is being monitored on an ongoing basis in consultation with all the relevant supervisory and health bodies. All the pitches and Club facilities will remain closed until at least next Tuesday May 25th and members will be informed and updated on an ongoing basis. We ask everyone to observe best practise and obey all the covid protocols. Stay safe and mind each other.
BINGO RESULTS WEEK 2
Last Saturday night we had our second Bingo night. We had a later start of 9.15 to allow viewing of the drawn Cork V Tipp NHL game. William O Leary did a great job 'calling' the numbers. The results were as follows on the night;
A bingo books cost €8 and it again promises to be a great night of family fun. All proceeds towards the club development. EAST CORK BOARD MASTER PLAN.
The Imokilly Divisional Board last week produced their fixtures master Plan for the 2021 season. It's a huge task and well done to all concerned. Whilst the Championship Formats have yet to be finalised great progress has been made in setting up a Framework for the next few months. In a praiseworthy effort to promote Gaelic Football in the Division specific weekends -following the County Board Plan, have been dedicated for Football only. In the Leagues our Groups are as follows.
Junior Football Group 3 ;Bride Rovers, Castlelyons, Carrignavar and Lisgoold.
Junior Hurling Group 4 Bride Rovers Castlelyons, Carrigtwohill, St Catherines, Cobh
Group 7; Bride Rovers Midleton, Erins Own, Castlelyons and Cloyne.
Games will commence on the June Bank Holiday weekend.
CORK UNBEATEN
Two games into the Allianz Hurling League and Cork remain unbeaten. A win the first weekend v Waterford and a Semple Stadium draw against Tipp on last Saturday night puts the Rebels in a good pace. Should they win v Westmeath next Sunday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh one would be very pleased with the progress. I suppose we will just have to get used to this 'new Inter County hurling' as they call it. It's not always pretty but hurling folk tell me the game has changed every year since Cork first met Tipp in Glenagowl in 1741. Be that as it may though I'm not sure if this possession based, short passing game is very attractive. Ok we won our last two All Irelands in 2004 and 2005 with a version of that game but the 2021 'model' seems to be more based on the much maligned Gaelic football and rugby templates and as Anthony Daly wrote on Monday it ain't hurling as we knew it. I was smiling at John Kiely's complaint about 'our game being stolen' - those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones! The fluency, the passion, the individuality, the self-expression is being coached out of hurlers. As strength and conditioning, sliotar throwing, swarming and game-plans take over I fear the end result will be a boring spectacle. I pray and hope I am wrong.

DOWN MEMORY LANE.
This very week ten years ago, May 2011, we played two games in the Cork Senior League, at home to Glen Rovers and away to Cloyne. We lost to the Glen but won in Cloyne. These were the reports on the two games.
Senior Hurling League V Glen Rovers at Rathcormac on Wednesday May 10th.
For some reason this game drew a large attendance -probably due to the 2010 championship clash, and Club Cathaoirleach James Bermingham is to be thanked for handling matters. He ensured that the numbers on the sideline were reduced and this made for a better spectacle for all present.
We played against a strong wind on the first half and after 12 minutes the sides were level on 3 points each. Some great long range points by the Glen gave them the edge and by half-time the Blackpool side led on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-6.
We opened the second half brightly and our defence was on top but scores were hard to come by and in fact all our scores in the 2nd half came from placed balls. No quarter was asked for or given by either team but we failed to convert some opportunities. The Glen were restricted to two points from frees. The final whistle saw the Glen ahead by 1-12 to 0-11.

Senior Hurling League V Cloyne at Cloyne, Sunday May 15th.
We played against the strong wind in the 1st half and were slow to settle. Cloyne built up a 3 point lead. Our defence were under a lot of pressure but once we settled down we came well into the game and were behind by just 2 points at half-time on a score of 0-7 to 0-5(In fact our score was 0-6 but the referee refused to give us one point despite the fact that both umpires said that we scored 6 points-he stated that the flag was not raised for one score, so even if the sliotar goes straight between the posts a score is not to be awarded unless the white flag flutters!). With the wind on the resumption we settled in well and scored 1-2 before Cloyne were on the board. We had some good combination play in the second half and some excellent scores and it was good to see some of the previously injured players back on the field of play. Colm O'Keeffe came on at half-time and during the second half Donal Ryan and Jim O'Connor replaced David Burke and Barry Murphy.We finished well in control and the final score was 2-15 to 1-11. This was our first win in this years Senior Hurling League and comes at a good time with the Na Piarsaigh game coming up in a few weeks Scorers: Barry Johnson 0-8, Sean Ryan 1-3, Jerome O'Driscoll 1-2, and David Burke 0-2.

CLUB 100.

MEMORIES.
During last year, our first year of lock down the death occurred of Alice Kenneally of Dungourney wife of the famous Dan Kenneally. Dan was a larger than life figure in East Cork GAA for decades. A Club and Board Officer Dan was also very involved in Scor but it's as a referee he's best remembered. Dan actually played a game or two with our minor team many years ago when working in this area. He often recalled those time to our Club President Pat O Connor- Dan was given a suitable fictitious name when playing with the Rovers ! I remember a juvenile game we were playing back in the 1970's and at half time I (in my capacity as Juvenile Club Secretary) expressed 'my frustration' to Dan as regard frees awarded to the opposition. He asked me 'How many frees did I give 'em?' I replied that we got about four frees and they got at least twelve. 'Dan reassured me and in fairness I think we got eighteen frees in the second half as against three for the opposition! We were still beaten by four points! Also last year another great Gael died, Dick Doocey from Killeagh but from Tourin near Cappoquin originally. Dick did a bit of reffing too! I asked his life long friend Ollie Wilkinson what sort of a referee was Dick? Ollie thought for a few seconds and replied 'As a referee you could sum him up in one word -unique', enough said! Dick told me himself that onetime he was reffing a game one evening in a certain town in West Waterford. During the first half of the game, which had started at seven o clock, his stopwatch failed -at the time watches were scarce. He knew that at half seven a train would be leaving the nearby Station and the driver always gave a 'Hoot, hoot' on exiting the station. He played on til he heard the 'Hoot, hoot' and, in his own words, 'Fellas were saying and giving out yards, God -Doocey that was a long half hour… I said nothing ..got the watch going. The second half was about thirty three minutes but I found out later that the train was nearly quarter of an hour late leaving the station that evening… so young Arnold, when fellas tell you that the first 70 or 80 minute game was played in such and such a year in Croke Part.. they're wrong….'twas in West Waterford around 1959'! God rest them, they were some characters.
