Club Notes for last week.. - 2020-11-21 12:15:00

Double Bubble Burst...

How often over the years have Cork lost big hurling games below in Limerick- too often and last Saturday was the same. In woeful weather conditions Cork lost out to the 'auld enemy' Tipperary. The premier County won by points though Cork had led by the same margin with just over ten minutes left. How often over recent seasons at minor, under 21 and under 20 has the elusive Jake Morris put paid to Corks championship hope.? He struck again on Saturday with a goal that sealed Cork's fate. So the Cork hurlers championship campaign is over for 2020. The glory days of 2004 and 2005 seem a long way away now. Facing into 2021 'twill be all of fifteen years sine we welcomed Liam McCarthy home. It mightn't be a Famine but it's certainly a Great Hunger. The Munster Championship is tough to win now, with just six teams left in the race for the All Ireland Title four are from the Southern Province and Cork are the odd one out. We've seen 'green shoots' in recent years with great performances from our under 17 and under 20  teams but the big prizes are still evading us. Now as we face into late November in this strange year what odds a Tipperary double/ Last December when the GAA laid out it's masters Fixtures Plan a game involving the Senior Football teams of Dublin and Tipperary was pencilled in for Saturday November the 21st 2020 -one hundred years to the day after Bloody Sunday. Many other Commemorative events were planned for Grangemockler, Fethard, Clonmel and Croke Park. All of these events, which would have attracted huge crowds, are gone by the wayside because of covid. Yet this is still a huge weekend for the Tipperary footballers. Instead of a game v Dublin in Croke Park they come Leeside on Sunday to face Cork in the Munster Football Final. having beaten Kerry the Rebels will be hot favourites but should not and cannot take Tipperary for granted, especially on this historic weekend.

NEW CORK GAA MEMBERS DRAW.

'Rebels Bounty' is the new name for the Cork GAA Annual Members Monthly Draw and was to have had a gala re-launch recently but unfortunately along with so many other events this function had to go. Rebels' Bounty will instead be launched in late 2020 / early 2021 and a meeting of Cork County Board, which will be devoted solely to this item, will be held when circumstances allow. The Draw is still a monthly draw costing €10 a month to enter or a once-off payment of €100. This year there will be 30 prizes each month. The minimum First Prize each month will be €20,000 with prizes of €25,000 in December and April and in August 2021 the first prize is €100,000. DOWN MEMORY LANE

In 1969 our Junior Hurlers won the East Cork Championship for the second year in a row defeating Carrigtwohill in a replay before losing out to Kanturk in the County. The hurlers also reached the East Cork Junior Hurling League final but lost to Killeagh in the Final by 3 7 to 0 5 on Sunday November the 9th. It wasn't until 1981 that we reached a League Final once more. John Whyte from Fermoy and originally from Castlemartyr took over as team trainer in 1981. John had been on the 1965 Cork Intermediate team along with Seanie Barry when they won the All Ireland title. In 1966 they were on opposite sides in the Senior County Final. John lined out with Avondhu who beat UCC in the Final. We had a great start to the 1981 JHL with four straight wins beating Dungourney 4 6 to 1 3, Carrigtwohill by 5 8 to 3  8, Midleton by 2  5 to 0 5 and Youghal by 2 12 to  13. Though we lost heavily in the Championship t St Catherines our good league run continued. By defeating Fr O Neills 5 8 to 3 8 we qualified for a quarter final against St Itas. At this stage of the year Henry Hazlewood had taken over as team trainer. When we trailed the Gortroe side by 1 1 to   1 5 at half time in Midleton on August 2nd things looked bleak. Second half goals from Richie Cotter and Club Sec Tom Mulcahy transformed the team and we won by 3 8 to 1 9. In September in Lisgoold we defeated Sars by 3 10 to 3 1 to qualify for the League Final for the first time in twelve years.

The semi final line out was P. Hoskins, P. Murphy, D. Kearney, S. Murphy, T. Kearney, T O Flynn, L Cahill, D Ahern, P Collins, C. Johnson, M. Dooley, T. Mulcahy, R. Cotter, F. O Driscoll, J Johnson. Sub J. Maye. It was the end of September before the League Final was played. Castlemartyr were our opponents and Lisgoold was the venue.   We led by 1 8 to 0 3 at the break and ran out easy winners by 3 10 to  0 6. Seamus O Flynn, Runai of the EC Board presented the League Trophy to team captain Mossy Dooley. The team in the final was Pat Hoskins, Seamus Collins, Sean Murphy, Paudie Murphy, Liam Cahill, Tom Kearney, Tommy O Flynn, Denis Ahern, Paudie Collins, Cyril Johnson, Moss Dooley Captain, Tom Mulcahy, James Maye, Jimmy Johnson, Richie Cotter. Subs on the day were Denis Mulcahy, Pat Cotter, Jack Ahern, Dan Dooley, Anthony Kearney. Declan Kearney was on his honeymoon. Others who played in earlier games included  Brendan O Driscoll, Larry Kearney, Pat Heskin, Paudie Murphy,(Portduff),  Maurice Kearney, Fachtna O Driscoll. We retained the League Title in 1982.

Conventions, AGM and Meetings.

Normally as we approach the month of December thoughts would be turning towards a list of end-of-year gatherings at Club, East Cork and County level. It will be strange this year. The normal cut and thrust of debate and proposing and seconding will be replaced with terms like Zoom, Incorporeal  and Virtual. Changing times indeed.

A Munster Football Final and an All Ireland Hurling quarter final on one weekend in Cork would normally be a bumper few days for all Cork businesses. Unfortunately this weekend we will have two major games but far from the madding crowds once more. On Saturday Clare face Waterford for the right to advance to the Last Four in Hurling. Then on Sunday afternoon Cork meet Tipperary in the Munster Football Final.
