Junior Cs back in action..

Back in the 1880's when teams were 21 a side the newly formed GAA Club in the Parish put out two teams without a bother. But even with 42 players in action there were still others left on the sideline. The idea of putting out a third XI was mooted and a 'trial' game was arranged. Team and Club organiser Fr Edmond Barry PP was at a funeral in Castlelyons on the afternoon of this 'possibles' v 'probables' game which was a lively contest. He arrived back in Rathcormac as proceedings came to an end. He enquired from someone about the standard of hurling and hurlers and came the reply ' Do you know what Father they are regular, downright holy terrors' The Priest was amused with the answer and so the ream took the name 'Holy Terrors' for 1888. When the East Cork GAA Board introduced a Juhior C Grade competition some years ago Bride Rovers entered a team. We've got to five Finals and have won two. This years C Championship is being run on a Round- Robin basis. There are two other teams in our group, Lisgoold and Carrignavar , both 'second strings' with one team to qualify from the Group. On Sunday next we are billed to play Lisgoold at 2.30 in Castlelyons. We've used 37 players between Senior and Junior B so numbers may be tight. Go for it lads and best of luck.

 UNDER 16's QUALIFY

Our under 16 hurlers have qualified for the knockout stages of the Premier 1 Hurling League. Having beaten Glen Rivers and lost to Midleton we had a home game against Carrigtwohill last Saturday. This was championship type match as a victory was needed to obtain a Top Four spot. We Started very well and took a commanding lead early in the first half.  Playing very fast direct hurling right through the field the starting fifteen were in top form. With some very well taken goals and points from Adam, Louis, David, Cillian, Josh & Ronan and a goal from a penalty spot by Adam Hayes we were well worth a lead of  3-9 to 5 points at the half time break. Our defence were tight and Carrig found it hard to get through.   A slow start in the second half  left Carrigtwohill the chance to capitalise on the score board which they did. They outscored us by  3-2 to 5 points in the second half. For some reason we were well off the pace in the second half but had enough to see the game out on a winning score of Bride Rovers 4-14 to Carrig's 3-7 Panel; Ronan O Riordan, Cormac O Sullivan, Liam Collins, Eldon O Connor, Denis Cashman, Conor Hazelwood, Kieran Cotter, Davy Barry, Cillian Tobin, Nicky Kelleher, Adam Walsh, Ronan O Connell, Louis Roche, Josh Ahern, Adam Hayes, Ryan O Callaghan, Cillian Barry, Kieran Ryan, Ciaran O Dowd ,Darragh Kielty, Adam Hynes, Ryan O Callaghan, Colin Hogan, Ben Knox, Frank O Flynn We are qualified for the Top 4 and in the draw with St Finbarrs, Ballincollig and Midleton. Our lads looked great in  the new Jersies that Fitzy's Takeaway Sponsored for the Under 15 and under 16 teams. Many thank to Fitzy's for their continued

support.JUNIOR HURLING v ST.VINCENTS.

On Sunday morning last St Vincents from the Northside of Cork city were visitors to Pairc na Bride for a Junior Hurling challenge. We lined out as follows; Jerome O Driscoll, Matthew Quinn, Donnacha Carr, Jack Connor, Tomas Macak, Liam Forde, John O'Sullivan, Jordan Mannix, Damien Buckley, Jason Mannix, Brian Collins, DJ, Shaun Knox, Shane O Flynn, Craig O'Callaghan, Colm Howard, Jessie O'Keeffe, Pa O'Driscoll, Seamus Ahern, Cian Howard. Vincent's started the quicker and were 1-3 to a point up after 10 minutes. We worked our way back into the game and by half time the score was back to 1-7 to 9. The Rovers scores coming from Jordan Mannix, Jason Mannix, Damien Buckley and Shaun Knox.

We made five changes made at half time and all panel members getting a good run out. We kept in touch of St. Vincent's for the whole of the second half and added another eight points but couldn't find a goal and St. Vincent's ran out winners by 2 points on a score of 1-16 to 17 points. We had a great mix of scorers and 15 of our points came from play. Our next game in the Junior B HC will be the weekend after next when we are due to play Russell Rovers.

UNDER 11's GET NEW JERSIES.

On Friday last our under 11's had their first game of the year. It was special occasion as we received a new set of jerseys from Michael Walsh Groundworks. Many thanks to Michael and  Sylvia for their generous support.

Hurling v Carrigaline.
Last Friday night we hosted Carrigaline U11s in Pynes field. With both teams having 21 players we played 2 teams each with all players playing. This was a great challenge for our lads as Carrigaline have a panel of 35 players and brought some of their strongest. All 4 games were very evenly balanced with some great scores taken by both teams. As the weather had been very wet over the previous 48 hours the grass was a little high which led to a tight, physical game....which all players answered with great heart and determination though the parents didn't enjoy it as much!!!
Unfortunately on the night Oliver Harris sustained a knee injury which will keep him out for a few weeks. Get well soon Oliver! We were due to start a period of six competitive games from Saturday next. Unfortunately 2 of the clubs we were due to play are now unable to field teams so we will have some free weekends. We are trying to organize some challenge games and will keep everyone  informed. Training continues on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings

U8s All our under 8 players will have been thrilled that Wednesday night training resumed on recent weeks. We will have Football training on Wednesday night in Pynes at 630pm and hurling on Saturdays. We look forward to Go Games starting in three weeks with a trip to Ballygiblin and a home fixture v Fermoy.

SENIOR HURLING.

Our next game in the Senior Hurling Group series is on Saturday week August 29th. We are billed to play Kilworth and the match has been fixed for Glanworth at 4 pm That weekend we are also down to play Russell Rovers in the JBHC and on the Sunday(Aug 30th) we host Dungourney v Mayfield in the Co IHC..

1920 - 100 YEAR AGO..

On 'The Cork Examiner'  on Friday June 25th 1920the following report appeared    'GAA Rathcormac v Glenville'.

On Sunday last, at the neatly situated grounds of the home team, amidst charming surroundings, the above teams met in a friendly contest. The match was witnessed by a fairly large attendance. After a keenly contested game, which at times brought forth  some interesting and exciting passages, and which the spectators were not slow to appreciate. Rathcormac came out winners by a substantial margin. The match was played in a friendly spirit throughout. Judging from the material available to the Rathcormac team, there seems to be no reason why, with a closer attention to practise and field placing, they should not be heard of to more advantage. The War of Independence was waging during 1920 so GAA games were few and far between. Rathcormac were billed to play Doneraile in the County Hurling Championship on May 9th. The game was fixed for Ballyhooley. I have been unable to find the result. It would seem likely that Doneraile won because on August 17th at Mallow Doneraile defeated Fair Hill by 1 7 to 1 2. Another interesting result in April 1920 was when Ballyhooley, captained by Daithi Murphy, defeated Kanturk hurlers by 8 5 to 0 1. In that same month of August the Cork County Board cancelled all further games in the County. This action was taken in solidarity with Cork Lord Mayor Terence McSweeney who was on hunger strike in Brixton Prison. He died in October after 73 days on hunger strike.

MEMORIES OF HURLING IN BARTLEMY AROUND 1920

(From a letter written by Billy Barry of Hightown/Mondaniel in 1979 -one of the founders of Bride Rovers)

'I remember as a young fellow on the sideline watching the Bartlemy team in games around 1919/1920. They played Castlelyons at Bluebell, played Watergrasshill at Bartlemy Cross in Denis' field and a match against Glenville at the Pound, I think they lost all three games. Paddy Cotter, Martin and Bill Murley, Bill Shea, Mick McCarthy, Pad Spillane, Mike Ahern and Mick Geary were all handy hurlers.. The Civil War finished it.'

UNDER 10 HURLING AND FOOTBALL.

Players under TEN years of age are back practising the skills of both hurling and football. Football training sessions are on Wednesday at 6:30pm and hurling on Saturday at 10am. This age group are a great bunch who just want to learn. Winning or losing or keeping the score is of no consequence. It's all about having fun and learning to improve the many skills and have an enjoyable time. We have leagues starting on August 22nd and we are hoping to have a game or two before then to fine tune all the training.

For any boy not currently playing but interested in getting involved just contact any club member who will give details of how to get involved.

UNDER 12  GAMES.

The U12s have been training since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted with great attendance records over 2 months since. The boys train on Monday and Thursday nights with matches normally arranged for Monday nights.  The team are in U12 East Division 2 in both hurling and football and have played a match in each so far. The next match is on Monday 17 Aug against Passage West (away). The league matches so far were against Blackrock in hurling, in which the boys played well, fought hard but were pipped by Blackrock; and in football against Carrigtwohill, which was  a difficult match against a superior outfit.  That said, the boys never gave up which was a credit to them. They were to play Passage on Monday night but the game was cancelled due to the torrential rain.
