Minors Win, Seniors Lose and Juniors Draw..

It was hectic week of activity on the playing fields with mixed results. After the 'famine' that stretched from March 'til July it's now full steam ahead in all grades as we head towards Mid August. After a great start in our Group in the Senior A Hurling championship the previous week we came a cropper at the hands and hurleys of Fr O Neills in Round 2. Our Minor hurlers lost by a last-minute point to Castlelyons in their first game. Defeat to Passage West would see them out of the Competition. On a wet and windy night in Pairc na Bride we had six point win. Our Junior B hurlers travelled to Paddy Walsh Memorial Park in Castlemartyr on Saturday night to take on Killeagh third XV. Our shooting was wayward but we managed a draw.

MINOR HURLING.

Tuesday evening August 4th was cold, windy  and wet as our Minor hurlers lined out for the second of our 3 Group games in the Rebel Og Minor Competition.  For us the game was, in effect, a knock out contest. Castlelyons had beaten us in game 1 and the same night Passage defeated Mayfield .  A second loss would signal the end of the campaign.   Passage West came with a big reputation. They are trained by Justin McCarthy, a team-mate of Seanie Barry on the Cork All Ireland winning Senior Hurling team in 1966. Justin trained Antrim, Clare, Cork and Waterford.

Our lads had the aid of a strong breeze in the first half but found it hard to cope with the physically stronger Passage team. We were behind by 4 points after the first quarter. In the second periods a brace of goals from Adam Walsh helped us to a six point cushion at half time; 2 9 to 1 6. The wind picked up after half time and Passage had two quick points. Ronan O Riordan made two great saves which were vital. Our defence was under savage pressure but held firm. Adam Walsh hit 2 6 with Edmond Cashman adding five points. Adam Hayes 3 and John Buckley, 2, both got points at vital stages in the game. We won by a margin of six points, 2 16 to 2 10.    Panel; Ronan O Riordan, Darragh O Sullivan Liam Collins Jacob Powel Denis Cashman
Thomas Macak (captain) Conor Hazelwood David Barry Adam Walsh Cillian Tobin Ronan O Connell John Buckley Nicky Kelleher Adam Hayes Edmond Cashman Josh Ahern Louis Roche Ryan O Callaghan Ciaran Cotter Cormac O Sullivan Cillian Barry
Eldon O Connor Ciaran O Dowd.
Our final group game v Mayfield is on next Wednesday night August 19th in Mayfield at 6.30 pm

Rebel Og Under 16 Football.

On Saturday last at noon Clyda Rovers were visitors to Pairc na Bride for this under 16 Football tie. In sweltering conditions both teams played out a drawn game. Both sides scored 1 10.  Team panel; Ronan O Riordan, Cormac O Sullivan, Liam Collins, Eldon O Connor, Denis Cashman, Conor Hazelwood, Kieran Cotter, Davy Barry, Cillian Tobin, Nicky Kelleher, Adam Walsh, Ronan o Connell, Louis Roche, Josh Ahern, Adam Hayes, Ryan O Callaghan, Cillian Barry, Kieran Ryan, Ciaran O Dowd ,Darragh Kielty, Adam Hynes.

SENIOR HURLING v FR O NEILLS.

Pairc UI Rinn was the venue on Friday night last for our al East Cork derby game against Fr O Neills. They'd defeated Kilworth in Ballynoe  the evening before we beat Ballymartle so the winners would be guaranteed a knock-out place. The opening ten minutes were even enough. O Neills had gone two ahead but Wm Finnegan tied up the scores with two frees. Declan Dalton was on target with frees before Brian Roche hit a super point from way out. We had an early goal chance which came to nothing. After 22 minutes we were 0 7 to 0 4 behind but the lads had settled well into the contest. Then O Neills pulled ahead with a goal to put them in a very strong position. They led by 1 11 to 0 6 at half time though we had another chance of a green flag just before the break.. We had a slight breeze in the second half and had plenty possession in the ten minute period after the restart. Three wides in a row didn't help our cause. Wm Finnegan kept putting over points from frees. But we struggled for scores from play. We had just two scorers from play Brian Roche with 4 points and Team Captain Daniel Dooley with two while 8 Fr O Neills players contributed to their tally. In fairness to all of our lads they played some great hurling in a game that was of a high standard. In the end we lost by a margin of seven points  1 20 to 0 16. Cian Hogan, Fergus Collins, Brian Murphy, Tadhg O Sullivan, Shane O Connor , Eoin Roche, Shane Walsh, Daniel Dooley (Captain), Kieran Kearney, William Finnegan, Ryan Prendergast, Paddy O Flynn, Jason Pratt, Cian O Connor Brian Roche; Subs Conor Barry & Michael Collins, Jason Pratt. Scorers William Finnegan 0 10, 8 from frees, 2 65's, Daniel Dooley 0 2, Brian Roche 0 4.

We have one game left in the Round Robin series against Kilworth in two weeks time. Kilworth lost Ballymartle by a point so to qualify we have to win this game.

JUNIOR B HURLING v Killeagh.

On a beautiful evening we journeyed to Castlemartyr on Saturday last to see our Junior B team take on Killeaghs third fifteen in the Group Stages of the East Cork JBHC. It was a ding dong struggle with Killeaghs ability to score long range points a major factor. They led by a point at half time but we had hit nine wides in the first half  In fairness all our forwards got on the score-sheet as well as midfielders Jordan and Griffin and centre back Liam Forde.. A second half goal from Jesse O Keeffe put us ahead and points from Jason Mannix saw us five points up. Back came Killeagh with two points then a goal. We went ahead by a single point but they levelled. Then in the last attack of the game we had a chance to win it but instead it was wide number eighteen. Luckily we still have another chance with a game against Russell Rovers in two weeks time. If we win that we can still reach to play-offs.  Team; Jerome O Driscoll, Seamus Ahern, Donncha Carr, Jack Connor(Captain), Matthew Quinn, Liam Forde0 1, Oisin Roche, Jordan Mannix 0 2, Griffin O Keeney0 1 , DJ Cahill 0 l, Thomas Macak 0 1, Colm Howard 0 1, Shaun Knox 0 3, Jason Mannix 0 5, Jesse OK Keeffe 1 1, Brian Collins & Shane O Flynn.

Paddy Canning RIP.

The Club extends it's sympathy to the family of Paddy canning of Fermoy and formerly of Rathcormac. Paddy died last weekend. In his younger days Paddy played hurling with Bride Rovers. That was in the late1940's when successes were scarce enough but Paddy was proud that he wore the Green, White and Gold jersey. In 1947 Paddy was on the Minor Hurling team beaten by Cobh when they got a goal in injury team. That minor hurling team lined out as follows; Peadar Coughlan, Lar Foley, Paddy O Regan, Dan Gubbins, Tony O Keeffe, James O Donnell, Michael O Riordan (Tiny),  Sean O Sullivan, Paddy Canning, Neily O Keeffe, Wm (Bob) O Regan, Jim Coughlan (Coach), Timmy O Keeffe, Jim O Donovan, Batt Maye; Subs Martin Murphy , Paddy Rea & Sean Cronin. Paddy was a lovely man to meet and talk with and a real gentleman. It's truly the end of an era for that generation of the Canning family as Paddy's sister Alice Burke also died recently. May they rest in peace.
