Hurlers in Championship action...

Back in March we were in middle of preparations for our Senior Championship tie against Ballymartle when the Covid pandemic played havoc to the country. For much of the summer it looked like the 2020 season would be cancelled altogether with no Gaelic games at all. Well the games are back but with a difference. Normally on Club Notes like this bulletin our brilliant supporters would be encouraged to turn out in their hundreds to support the lads as they begin their hurling championship campaign. Unfortunately such a message cannot go out this week in advance of Saturday evening's game. With a maximum crowd of only 200 allowed at outdoor events our game against Ballymartle will be practically be played beyond closed doors.  The participating Clubs will only get a tiny allocation of tickets. It's a tough situation but we cannot but obey the Rules and Regulations. We are in a Group of 4 teams in this new Round-Robin format championship. Fr O Neills and Kilworth meet in Ballynoe on Friday night and then at 5 o clock on Saturday in Ballincollig Bride Rovers face Ballymartle. This will be a severe test for our lads especially as injuries keep a few key players off the starting fifteen. Just once before have we met the team from the South East in Championship action. That was back in 2002. We had  defeated Youghal in the first round but lost to Ballymartle in Pairc Ui Rinn on a scoreline of 1 16 to 0 13.Our team on Saturday June 29rh 2002 was D. Fitzgerald, B. Walsh, N. Fitzgerald, P. Barry, J. Murphy, Barry Murphy, B. Murphy, D.Ryan, P. Murphy, B. Hazlewood, M.Hogan, T. Broderick, R. Cahill, S. Ryan, J. O Driscoll., B. Johnson, A Collins. With no tickets available for Saturday evening's game the Club is hoping  to use modern technology to 'live stream' the match .Tim Riordan of Glenagoul recalled many years ago how pigeons were often taken to Cork Munster Hurling championship matches -maybe in Limerick or Thurles or Waterford. The result of the game would be written on a piece of paper, which was tied to the leg of the bird. The pigeon was released and would be back home in the parish hours before anyone returned from the game. This was in an era before wireless radio was invented. Things have changed a bit since so hopefully on Saturday evening our loyal supporters will be able to keep in touch. Best of luck to all the panel of players and to Stephen and his backroom team Go for it lads, Bride Rovers Abú.

Rebel Og Minor Hurling Championship.

It was great game of hurling with super scores from both sides. .With time almost up the teams were n level scores -Bride Rovers 1-21 Castlelyons 2-18 but a last minute point from a free gave Castlelyons the win. Under 11 Hurling and Football.

Our U11 boys season has been up and running with the last 4 weeks. We are training in hurling every Wednesday night and football every Saturday morning. Numbers have been high so enthusiasm is certainly not wanting for this bunch! During the week our league format has been published by Rebel Og so we have some degree of certainty for what lies ahead. In football we are grouped with Glenville, Erins Own and Fermoy while in hurling we have Ballygiblin, Fermoy & Kilworth. These games are scheduled to start from August 22nd.Depending on the health of the nation there may be further games scheduled from the end of September. Last Saturday we had a combined game session with our U10 team. In total we had 40 lads togged and these were picked into 4 teams. We had 2 X 15 minute games of hurling and 1 game of football. As 1 coach noted there was more physicality in some of these challenges than there would be in a regular game versus another club…..all players certainly wanted to beat their buddies!!! Thanks to John Lynch for his help in co-ordinating this.

SAFEGUARDING COURSE.

Thanks and well done to all those Club members who have completed the Safeguarding Course since the start of the year. The Club wishes to express it's gratitude to Rosario and Irene who put in a huge effort in making all the arrangements over the last seven months.

UNDER 10'Ss TRAINING.

Players under years of age are back practising the skills of both hurling and football. Football training sessions are on Wednesday at 6:30pm and hurling on Saturday at 10am. This age group are a great bunch who just want to learn. Winning or losing or keeping the score is of no consequence. It's all about having fun and learning to improve the many skills and have an enjoyable time.

Bringing It All Back Home

As we prepare to take on Ballymartle this weekend in Senior Hurling Championship it might be a good time to reflect on 55 years ago, 1965, when the Club was 'back on the road again' after an absence of three years. The club was reorganised in the winter of 1964. For 1965 a B Grade team was entered in both championship in League. The first game of the year was on March 7th when we met Erins Own in a League tie at Watergrasshill. Our first competitive outing ended in a 10 3 to 2 4 defeat. Gradually with League and Tournament games the team improved considerably. In the first round of the JBHC in Carrigtwohill on Augudt 22nd Dungourney were defeated by 5 9 to 7 2. A week later in Midleton we faced St Catherines in the Championship quarter final. A great game saw us win by 4 11 to 5  4 and so in our first season 'back' we were in the semi final of the Championship. Our opponents were neighbours Castlelyons and the venue on September 12th was Riverstown.  We were behind by 2 3 to 0 5 at the break. The second half was very close but Castlelyons went on to win by a goal, 5 6 to 3 9.  It was good first year, in 1966 we won the B grade title and in 1968 and 1969 won the A Grade.
