Together We Stand..
Indeed these are unprecedented times as our country struggles to come to terms with the Pandemic that is the Corona or Covid 19 Virus. All sport has been cancelled and new measures are being announced each day as gallant efforts are made to minimise the effects of the virus. It is at times like this that community spirit comes to the fore. There's an old Irish saying 'Ar scaith a chéile a mhaireann na daoine' -'Everybody lives in each other's shadow' and at times like this we must all pull together to help each other and for the common good. All Games Off
The GAA at national level reacted quickly when the new measure were announced last week concerning the closure of schools and colleges. All games and training activities were suspended until March the 28th. This also applies to the Camogie Association and the Ladies gaelic Football Association. This disruption will undoubtedly cause major problems later in the year but sporting fixtures pale into insignificance in comparison to people's health and welfare.
Message from Minister Michael Ring
Minister Ring, Minister for Rural and Community Development has called for the mobilisation of communities to support vulnerable neighbours. The mobilisation of local community & voluntary groups and the engagement of volunteers at local level can play a crucial part in ensuring that vulnerable people living in the community can continue to have their needs met in the event that their usual sources of support become unavailable.

We met in Bartlemy Hall on last Wednesday night to plan our strategy for the two weeks leading up to the Munster Final fixed for Cappamore on Saturday week march 28th. We were delighted to welcome Siobhan Buckley into the cast. We had planned to meet again last Sunday night but events have overtaken everything and the Munster Scor Committee had announced that the Munster Final is not now going ahead. Maybe, just maybe the event may be held later in the year.
Cheltenham Success for Dinny.
In a week of bad news there was one great story when Lisnagar Oscar won at 50 to 1 in Cheltenham. This animal was bred by local butcher and sportsman Dinny Fitzgerald of Lisnagar, Rathcormac. The Fitzgerald family have been part of sporting history in East Cork Patrick Fitzgerald was born and reared in Fort Richard Bartlemy. He played hurling with the 'old' Bartlemy team and was one of the founder members of Bride Rovers in 1928. He played with the Rovers also. He moved to Ballynoe and his family have contributed to Gaelic games in Galway, Clare and Dublin as well as with St Catherine's, Castlelyons and Bride Rovers. After winning a point to point race in Liscarroll Lisnagar Oscar and went across the water to England. Now owned by the eight person Racing For Fun Syndicate which includes Tony Outhart a former Scarborough Soccer Club player. Trained by Rebecca Curtis Lisnagar Oscar was ridden to victory in the Paddy Powers Stayers Hurdle by Adam Wedge.The unbackable favourite in the race was the 2019 winner Paisley Park. Well done to Dinny on this great win. Dinny was very emotional and proud when interviewed live on Racing TV after the race. Dinny is a former officer and selector with the Bride Rovers Club.
Pitch Work
Work on the entrance has been recently completed. Over the years we were constantly resurfacing this area. Now it has been concreted and looks very well. The safety fencing is excellent and makes spectator safety of utmost importance. The perimeter fencing in Scannell's has also been completed. Work on levelling this ground for a juvenile pitch will commence shortly. Most of this Development Work has only been possible because of the funds generated by the Club 100 Fundraising initiative. Under this scheme patrons can join Gold, Silver or Bronze. The monthly subscription includes Club Membership, Weekly Lotto Ticket and membership of the Cork GAA Supporters Monthly Draw- these vary depending which subscription you take out. At present we are seeking new members for Club 100. Full details from any Club Member or Officer.
Weekly Club Lotto
The draw for a Jackpot of €20,000 was held on last Tuesday March 10th. On the night the four numbers drawn were 6, 9, 20 & 26 and there was no winner.The winners of €30 each were Sean Twomey, Terramount, Siobhan Cashman Ballinahina, Micheal Hegarty, Bartlemy, Anne Marie Carey and Mary Condon. Thanks to all who support our Lotto each week. On Sunday night last the Lotto Subcommittee took the decision because of the Corona Virus Pandemic to suspend the Lotto until Tuesday March 31st. Any tickets sold already will be held over until the next draw.
Child Safeguarding Course.
The final night of the Children safeguarding course was to be held on last Monday night March 16th. This was postponed and will be rearranged at a future date. Thanks to all who have attended to date and those who have facilitated the course.
Looking down Memory Lane
We feature picture this week from the La na gClub activities held in the pitch back in the year 2010. It's only ten years ago but how the lads have grown. One picture is of a group of youthful players with a canine friend. The second is an action shot from the Water Games Olympic Final!
1890 -One hundred years ago
In the autumn of 1889 the County Senior Football championship Final of Cork (O Brien Board) took place. It was a City v Country affair with Rathcormac taking on Nils Desperandum (Nils) from Cork City. After a tense game Rathcormac won by 3 points to 1. In March of 1890 the Clubs met again the Queenstown (Cobh) Tournament. On the day three games were to be played but Blackrock never turned up to play Carrigtwohill in hurling. The second hurling game between Little Island was postponed.. The repeat of the County Football Final saw the result reversed with Nils winning by 1 4 to 0 3.
