Club Notes  by club PRO John Arnold ...Junior C's Lose Out to Cobh in Final...

We were defeated by a younger, more disciplined Cobh team in the East Cork Junior C Championship Final last Saturday at home. As we had drawn back in August against the same opposition, 15 points apiece, in the group stages, we were expecting this Final  to be a very close match. However it wasn’t to be as Cobh ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 0:17 to 2:4. Playing with a very strong wind in their backs in the first half, they finished the half leading by 11 points with the scoreboard reading 0:13 to 0:2 – Terry converting 2 frees for us. Cobh only scored 2 points from play with 11 points from placed balls. The free count (16-6) was massively in favour of the visiting side with our men getting clearly frustrating with some incredible decisions going against us.

We needed the first scores of the second half but instead we had some missed opportunities early on and Cobh further increased their lead. We finally got a score from Dave from a long range free before a well-orchestrated move which would have led to a certain Craig O’Callaghan goal was incorrectly ruled out for a throw pass. The best referees are the men in black who you don’t notice. This was not the case in this match. Cobh can also feel somewhat aggrieved when a perfectly good goal for them was incorrectly ruled against for a square ball. We didn’t give up and finished with a late flurry of 2 goals and a point from Dave to put some respectability on the scoreboard. Well done to Cobh who deserved their win – they took their chances when we didn’t.

When we drew the first game back in August on a scorching day we had 6 players who were not available for the Final due to being promoted to our Junior B team and work commitments. This of course was Cobh's Second XV and our Third team. It was great to see three of 'The Men of '98' playing in this Final. Terry Broderick, Richie Cahill and James Murphy were involved when we won the East Cork and County Junior titles all of 21 years ago. They have given absolutely sterling service to the Green, White and Gold jersey over the years. Let's hope we'll see them playing next year when the record of having played in four different decades beckons. Well done lads. We must also give a special word to our three Tipperary men, Damien Healy (Captain), Dave Burke and Paddy Croke. They have come and settled in our parish from the Premier County and have played mighty roles within our Club following the proud tradition of John Ryan and Dick Shelley. Two items to note – Firstly the pitch was in incredible condition having also been newly lined. Great credit is due to Denis and team to have it in such a fantastic state in the last day of November. Secondly it’s interesting to note that of the 15 that started, 7 are U21 and 7 are in their late 30’s/40’s with Daniel Lane being in the middle ground. Thanks to the management team of Alan O’Keeffe and Shane O’Connor for their work during the year.

Team: Ben Hogan, Matthew Quinn, Damien Healy, Brian Lahive, John O’Sullivan, James Murphy, Óisin Roche, Tom Murray, Terry Broderick, Dylan Browne, Dave Burke, Richie Cahill, Seamus Ahern, Patrick Croke, Daniel Lane Sub: Tomas Kearney, Craig O’Callaghan, Jake Tobin, Pa O’Driscoll, James Barry, Mark O’Connell, Ruairi O’Sullivan, Ian O’ Donoghue, Padraig Noonan.

U 21' S In County Semi Final.

Our under 21 hurling team contest the County Premier 2 Hurling Championship semi final on Saturday next December the 7th. We won the East Cork and County A Titles last year and were promoted to  Premier 2 for 2019. Unfortunately this championship and  the premier competition only started in late autumn and now here we are in Mid Winter at the semi final stage. It was October when we played our first round game. This was in Blarney when we had an easy win over Cloughduv on a scoreline of 2 18 to 0 7. On that same day Ballinhassig lost to Charleville by 2 20 to 1 17. Our next game was played in heavy rain in the 4G pitch at Pairc Ui Chaoimh just 2 weeks ago when we won a tight game v Aghabullogue by 1 11 to 0 9. Meanwhile Ballinhassig have defeated  Erins Own, Cloughduv and last Saturday in the Quarter Final they beat Mallow by 1 22 to I 13. Next Saturday it's back to the 4G pitch in Pairc UI Chaoimh for the semi final. Our game v Ballinhassig is at 2 o clock, the first of three games there on Saturday. We will need to show a big improvement from previous games to overcome a talented Ballinhassig side. It's a major challenge for our lads so go for it boys and like the last two games let's hope for a huge vocal following on the day.

JUVENILE AGM.

The Annual General Meeting of the Bride Rovers Juvenile Club will be held on tonight Thursday night December 5th at 8pm. The venue is upstairs in the Rathcormac Inn. With huge numbers coming on stream in all the juvenile ranks we need plenty people involved to help out with the various teams from under 6 up to under 18. We need coaches, trainers, selectors and mentors for every sage-group so there's job for everyone. 'Many hands make light work' is an old saying and it applies to our Club. Bride Rovers Juvenile Club welcomes everyone to get involved.

Cork GAA Convention.

The Annual Cork GAA Convention takes place on Sunday next in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The Draws/ Groupings  for the 2020 County Championships have been decided upon already so Convention will be looking at the Finances of Pairc Ui Chaoimh and the future of clubs who are now starved of summer games as the Inter County scene takes over. If it keeps going like the last few years the GAA will soon be in serious trouble. It's a scandal that lads who go to the USA or Australia for the summer can play more games than those who remain at home!

Good Luck Russell Rovers.

We wish Russell Rovers all the very best in the Munster Junior Hurling Final in Mallow next Sunday. The Shanagarry/ Ballycotton side will take on St. Mary's from Touraneena in Waterford.
