Junior C Hurling Championship..
Our Round Robin JCHC game v Castlemartyr had been fixed and refixed several times over the last three weeks. Eventually it went ahead Rathcormac on Sunday last at 11 o clock. We drew with Cobh on our first game in this competition as did Castlemartyr so Sunday's game was vital for both teams to progress to the semi final stage. You have to hand it to 'em, them Tipperary boys, first they win the all Ireland and then last Sunday two of them star for Bride Rovers. A total of 2 12 shared between Dave Burke and Paddy Croke is a mighty return for two players. To add to the Munster mix we had another Premier County man, Damien Healy at full-back. We started with a point from Dave followed quickly by a goal from Paddy. Three more white flags from Dave -2 from frees, were followed by a good point from Daniel Lane. Castlemartyr registered a point followed by a goal to leave us ahead by 1 5 to 1 1 after ten minutes. Dave Burke pointed two 65's before his wife's sister's husband Tomes Kearney hit a super point. 1 8 to 1 3 ahead after twenty minutes, our defence was coping well at the other end. Dave it over a third 65 before Daniel Lane goaled after great work from Tomas. Dave had the final score of the half to leave us 2 10 to 1 4 ahead at the break. With the breeze behind them the Reds tore into the game. They scored 1 6 in fifteen minutes during which our only score was a point from Daniel Lane. We were just hanging on by a the narrow margin of a single point, 2 11 to 2 10.
It's a great pity the game wasn't videod if only to see Brian Lahive execute the perfect, bone-crunching shoulder! Oisin Roche and Tom Murray made vital interceptions when it looked as if Castlemartyr might take over. Paddy Croke put two between the teams and from a free Dave made it three. Castlemartyr pointed a long range free to leave just two in it. Dave made it three and then four from a free. Great work by John O Sullivan, Jake Tobin and Dylan Browne resulted in a great goal from Paddy Croke to make sure of the victory on a 3 15 to 2 11 scoreline. Well done lads on a great win. With seven under 21 players involved and a good sprinkling of experienced campaigners on the side it is great to keep our interest alive in the championship.
