Senior Ladies footballers qualify for Senior B County final
Our senior ladies football team had a great win over our near neighbours Fermoy in the County B semi final in Ballyhooley last Sunday afternoon. We started strongly but missed 4 good scoring opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. At the 15 minutes mark, the score was 1 point to no score to Fermoy. Our backline were working very hard but our forwards were struggling to get through. But in a busy 5 minutes before half time, we capitalized on two poor Fermoy kickouts to score 2 good goals to go in leading by 2-03 to 0-04.
At the start of the second half, we allowed Fermoy back into the game and they eventually drew level half way through. We seemed to wake up then and we thundered back into the game. Some great points from Leah, Jen Barry, Michelle and Katie put us back in front. A good goal from Katie from play and a point from a free had us running out comfortable winners on a score-line of 3-10 to 1-10. Scorers on the day were Grace Kearney 1-0, Leah Hallihan 0-01, Michelle Hartnett 0-01, Jennifer Barry 0-01, Katie Quirke 2-07. Our backs won all of our kick-outs which is testament to the hard work put in by the girls and management on the training pitch and our forwards also won a good number of the Fermoy kick-outs. This was a good test for the girls as we had to work hard to get over a dogged Fermoy team. We now have a county final to look forward to against Kinsale next weekend. Please come along and support the girls.
U8 CamogieLast Sunday evening we took on Youghal in the East Cork A championship Semi Final. After already beating them in the League final in June we knew that this would be a good tough match. We started out well putting a couple of goals and points on the board in quick succession however Youghal being the talented team they are tagged on scores and they were back in the game at half time with just 2 points between us. Having not played to our best ability in the first half and with some encouraging words for the management team the girls went out in the second half and played some great football racking up score after score to finish the game with a great win which has set us up for a final against Glanmire in a couple of weeks. Well done to all.
MINOR CAMOGIE
Our minor camogie team lined out last Friday evening in Rathcormac against a strong Blackrock team in the county campaign. We were under pressure from the start with Blackrock attacking in waves. We found it difficult to get hold of the ball and when we did, we gave it away numerous times. Blackrock punished us throughout the first half and we went in at half time training by 1-09 to 0-04.
We are not quite sure what the management said to the team at half time but the transformation was incredible. We started holding on to the ball and slowly we worked our way back into the game. Sally Mc Carthy was unerring from placed balls and also scored 3 goals in that second half, Shauna Hayes thundered into the game and Ciara O Flynn had a great second half, winning great ball and giving great passes which resulted in scores. We were only a point down in the last minute when Sarah Murphy got hold of the sliotar and ran at goal. She was pulled down and the referee blew for a free. But when she was falling, she managed to get the ball into the net. When the referee saw that the ball was in the net, she awarded the goal and we won by 2 points. It was a great performance in the second half and Blackrock were left stunned at the final whistle. We now face into a county semi-final in the coming weeks. Well done girls!!
