Senior Championship on Sunday...
After a four month break the 2019 Cork Senior Hurling Championship resumed last weekend when Carrigtwohill defeated Killeagh in Midleton on Sunday evening. Next Sunday August 11th we are back in action. In April we were defeated by Douglas in the first round of the competition. That evening in Riverstown we had a great start but went out of the game in the second quarter. We held the city side scoreless for the third quarter but Douglas finished the strongest and we lost on a scoreline of 1 18 to 1 12. It was a brave display but April 20th is a long time ago. On that same evening Blackrock defeated Ballyhea and we were drawn to meet Ballyhea in Round 2. Over the summer months we had a good campaign in the County Senior Hurling League Division 1. We finished in joint fourth place with Na Piarsaigh but lost out in a play off for a semi final spot. So on next Sunday afternoon we travel to the Mallow GAA grounds to take on our North Cork opponents. Our game is at 3.45, preceded by Erins Own v Kanturk at 2 o clock. With players away abroad and injuries we will possibly have a different starting team than against Douglas. Like ourselves Ballyhea are a doughty championship side. It's really all about survival this year in the Senior Grade as next year there will be far fewer club teams competing at Senior level due to the introduction in 2020 of a Senior A Grade. The lads have prepared and trained well over the summer so let's have a great performance from each and every player lining out in the green, white and gold jersey on Sunday afternoon. Go for it lads. There is plenty parking space in the mallow complex for all attending both games.
BRILLIANT CUL CAMP
A very successful boys Cul Camp 2019 was held last week in Pairc Na Bride with 130 boys from 6 to 12 participating. We were extremely lucky with the weather with no rain and thankfully nobody quite burned either! The emphasis on the camp was fun and coaching the fundamentals which certainly went down well. We had 12 great coaches and 14 assistant coaches who gave the boys a great week to remember. In order to break up any monotony that could creep in some special coaches and guests were invited in during the week. On Tuesday Cork Senior Hurler Niall O'Leary made the short trek from Castlelyons and proved very popular with the lads. On Wednesday morning Shelly Mac from Max fitness did some fundamental movement classes with all age groups....this went down extremely well as it all fed into the fun category. Pa O'Driscoll also attended on Wednesday morning and proved a highlight for many of our lads as it was the first time any of them had a qualified referee doing their matches!!! Who'd have thought that a referee could provide such entertainment!!
On Wednesday each boy received a goodie bag and we're very grateful to the sponsors of these. Jump Juice Bars kindly provided us with drawstring bags, Daniel Dooley from Avonmore donated a carton of Mooju, Denis Ahern Hurleys provided a grip for each boy (and gumshields for each girl in their later camp), Fermoy Print & Design provided a Bride Rovers Car Sticker and Key Ring. Many thanks to Charlie, Daniel, Denis and Liam for all they donated.
On Thursday we received another special guest in 18 time All Ireland winner Briege Corkery who gave the lads great advice.
Friday was our fun-day and this ended with plenty of water being shared around...over all the coaches heads! Each child also received an Ice Cream cone so great work all round.
A lot of work went into this week. Ann Marie Knox again proved herself a brilliant administrator and ran the camp extremely smoothly. This year we had coaches of all the underage teams present...many taking annual leave from work to help with coaching and supervision. We're extremely lucky in this club that parents who've moved into the area...and a lot of locals, have bought into the ethos of the club and have given their time on a weekly basis with coaching. But for all these people to give their work time to facilitating a summer camp is amazing. There were 14 of these coaches over the week and I thank them all. Overall a brilliant camp which highlighted the best of the GAA
Cork in Final.
The Cork under 20 hurling team qualified for the All Ireland final with a win over Leinster champions Kilkenny in Portlaoise on last Saturday. It was World Twins Day and mighty to see Brian and Eoin Roche play their parts in Cork's victory, well done boys. The All Ireland u 20 Final is fixed for Sunday August 25th probably in Limerick. Cork's opponents once more will be Tipperary who had a facile win over Wexford on Sunday last. These sides have had some cracking games over the last two seasons and this Final should be another.

Proud Day For Girls.
Last Sunday in Tullamore Co. Offaly was proud and emotional day for our parish. Sarah Murphy and Katie Quirke were amongst the stars as Cork Minor Ladies Football team won the All Ireland title. Aine Keating and Sally McCarthy who play camogie with the Rovers and ladies football with Kildorrery were also vital players on the side. Sarah was brilliant in goals and her second half save was probably the turning point in the game. What can we say of Katie? Simply outstanding, she scored 1 7 and deserved the Player of the Match award for her display. Memories of these girls at under 12 and under 14 came flooding back as we thought of all those who have put so much into the Club in recent times. Well done girls.
SHANE WINS ALL IRELAND.
At the National Track and Field Championships held recently in Santry in Dublin further glory came to the Bride Valley. It's not just on the playing fields that All Ireland titles are coming to the parish! Shane Howard of Garrynacole won the National Senior Long Jump title. Back in 2002 Shane won national honours at under 9 level and now is Senior All Ireland champion. Shane's sister Roisin won a Silver medal in the 28lbs for distance event. Well done Shane and Roisin, ye are continuing in a proud tradition set by grandfather Denny Howard.

Well done to all who attended Cúl Camp last week. 25 under 7s took the pitch for the week and got a real treat on the Tuesday morning when Cork player Niall O'Leary stopped by to sign some hurleys and jerseys.

Junior B Hurling.
Our junior B team are playing Carrigtwohill in the league next Monday night (12th) at 8pm away. For the Rovers to be promoted this is a very important match as Carrigtwohill are currently in 2nd place having played two more matches. Winning this match keeps the Rovers destiny in their own hands. Our next championship match is fixed for the 16th against Killeagh. Both teams are through to the qtr. finals but this game will decide on a potentially easier draw as well as doubling up as a league game. Busy times ahead.
