Footballers win League..

Our Junior B football team travelled to Carrignavar on Friday night to play local rivals Glenville in the East Cork championship semi final with a place against Ballinacurra in the Divisional  final awaiting the victors. This game also doubled up as the East Cork Division 3 League final from last season. The L2018 League Final was fixed during march but postponed so there was a double reward for the winners of last Friday's game. We were down a few players due to injury and other commitments. Glenville had defeated Aghada in Rathcormac in the previous round and looked mighty impressive that night.  As usual our lads that took to the pitch on Friday night delivered an exceptional brand of fast paced attacking football. After a great game Bride Rovers  took control of the contest, winning on a scoreline of 17 points to 12. Glenville opened strongly racing into a three point lead in the first ten minutes. The Rovers then stepped up a gear and controlled the remainder of the half to lead by nine points to five at the short whistle. The second half was something similar with Glenville kicking the opening two points to reduce the deficit 0 9 to 0 7. When it seemed Glenville were gaining supremacy the lads came strong again and controlled the remainder of the game winning by five points. While there were some fantastic scores on the night with the free taking ability of Cian Hogan coming to the fore, it was the team performance that impressed most. The work rate from the lads never dropped throughout the sixty minutes and they know that they will have it all to do in the final having been defeated by Ballinacurra earlier in this competition. Ballinacurra won the 'Open' County JB F championship in Cork in 2018. After the game, the East Cork Board Chairman - Donal O'Keeffe presented the Patrick O'Mahony League Cup to Liam Forde and Liam replied suitably.

The team on the night was: Frank Hogan, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Liam Forde (Capt), Ruairi O'Sullivan, Matthew Quinn, Shane O’Connor (0-01), Tom Murray, Shane Walsh, Patrick O’Flynn (0-02), Griffin Keeney O’Sullivan, Cian Hogan (0-05), Conor Barry (0-07), Jordan Mannix, Damien Buckley (0-01), Dylan Browne (0-01), Jack Connor, John O’Sullivan and Ben Hogan. Well done lads on a great win -our second Football Trophy this year having won the East Cork u 21 Title in the Spring. Thirteen of the winning panel are under 21.

JUNIOR HURLERS WIN.

We played our first game in the 2019 East Cork Junior B Grade Hurling Championship on Monday night. We are in a group of three with Sars and Killeagh with the top two teams in the group going forward. Killeagh defeated Sars (their 4th team) by a point in their first game so when we took on Sars in Glenville on Monday night it was 'must win' game for Sars as two defeats would see them gone from the competition.. On a dull evening it was tough game and though it was Sars 4th XV  they played great hurling. We had a tonic start with points from Shane Walsh, Conor Barry and Cian Hogan. Gradually Sars came into the game, they were a point ahead 4 to 3 after fifteen minutes. In fairness to our lads they played some intelligent hurling with good clever tackling. This meant we gave away very few silly frees which was not easy in difficult conditions. Three pointed frees from Conor and another from Cian gave us a first half total of 7 with Sars on 8 at the break. In the second half our defence got well on top ensuring plenty ball for the forwards. Seamie O Farrell had a brilliant catch and a goal to restore our lead. Conor added four white flags from placed balls and we were six ahead. Sars didn’t give up and though down a man they fought back. In a hectic finish our lead was down to two but a late point from Conor saw us winners by 1 16 to 0 16. It was nervy performance but a win is a win and when the pressure came on the boys hurled well. Well done lads. At the time of writing no fixture has been made for the Killeagh game.

All Ireland Hurling Final.

Well it's an 'old firm' local derby All Ireland Hurling Final for 2019. Neighbours and great rivals Tipperary and Kilkenny will contest the Final on Sunday forth-night. To be honest playing the Final in mid August seems like lunacy to me as September Sundays were always so special. However the powers that be don’t listen to the so called grassroots anymore. It should be a mighty final after two brilliant semi finals last weekend.. There'll be great banter in our Club as we have plenty Tipp and Kilkenny involved in Bride Rovers at all levels. I told them at the B Grade game in Glenville on Monday night that we'll be only getting Two Tickets for the Club so the scramble for tickets is now really underway.

Co SHC

Our game in the County Senior Hurling Championship against Ballyhea is on in Mallow on Sunday week, August 11th at 3.345. It will be proceeded by another Senior game Erins Own v Kanturk.

Co JBHC final.

We wish Castletownroche in the County Junior B Final at the weekend. Castletown had an extra time victory over Freemount last Sunday. The other semi final was played in Pairc na Bride when Lough Rovers defeated Araglin. Thanks to those who helped out on the day with this game which clashed with the Tipp v Wexford game on the telly.

GOOD LUCK LADS.

The Cork u 20 hurling team contest the All Ireland semi final next Saturday in Portlaoise. After a gut-wrenching loss to Tipp in the Munster Final Cork will have to simply re-focus on this game. Best of luck to Brian and Eoin Roche and everyone involved with the team. On the same bill on Saturday Cork play Dublin in the u 20 All Ireland Football Final.

PJ Qualter RIP.

One of Galway's greatest hurlers of the 1970's PJ Qualter died last week. A talented forward PJ was on the Galway side that won the National Hurling League in 1975. In August of that year PJ scored an early goal in the semi final when they shocked Cork, winning by two points. That Galway team lost to Kilkenny in the All Ireland final but Galway had arrived as a hurling force. PJ and Joe McDonagh were two great Galway hurlers and characters gone too soon. May PJ rest in peace.
