On This Day..
It was on this day, May the 23rd, in the year 1900 that Fr. Edmond Barry PP died. Fr. Barry had a hugely influential role in the story of the GAA in our parish. He was an Officer, trainer, coach and chief organiser of both the Hurling and Football Clubs which went under the names of Bartlemy Hurling and Rathcormac Football. In effect the players on both teams were the very same individuals. What have been called 'Fr. Barry's Teams' had a relatively short existence of just three years - but they were absolutely glorious years. During the span of 1888, 1889 and 1890 a County Senior Football Title was won, a County Hurling Final was contested, losing to St. Finbarrs in Mallow. Tournaments were hugely popular in those early years of the GAA, not just 2 or 4 team Tournaments but with 8 and 12 teams taking part over a number of Sundays. The local teams had great matches against the likes of Carrigtwohill, Little Island, Kilworth, Fermoy, Ballyhooley, Shanballymore and Glanworth. Huge crows attended these Tournaments with the event held in Kilshannig being one of the best. Disputed goals, forfeit points, overs and 'verbal altercations' were common-pace at nearly every game! Fr. Barry was a superb organiser of transport, refreshments etc and often when the teams came back from a far away destination he would entertain them at his home in the Bridge House. Political disputes split the GAA badly in the 18880's and at one stage there were three rival 'County Boards' in Cork. Having been so brilliantly successful in their three-year existence Fr Barry and the others involved decided, at the end of 1890, not to affiliate any Clubs in the parish in 1891. Looking back now it seems a strange decision but once it was made all observed the decision. The sounds of hurling and football teams at practise and at play were heard no more in the parish until the early years of the 1900's.
Fr. Barry was born in Carrigtwohill in 1836, his mothers people were from Desert in Bartlemy. He ministered in Youghal, Aghada and Mitchelstown in his early priestly career. He came to Rathcormac as PP in 1885. Fr Barry was a noted writer and historian and compiled a massive history of the Barry family in the area from their arrival from Wales right down to the 1800's. It was his wish to be buried in Bartlemy Church. His mortal remains lie in rest to the left of the main Altar in the Church. His legacy and inspiration live on to this day.

COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1.
We were away to St. Finbarrs in Togher on last Thursday night in the County HL Div 1.
It was great game of hurling with the very first score of the game a Barrs goal. Sides were very even but we worked our way back into the game with some well taken points. At Half time the teams were level.
We continued to work hard and lead at the forty minutes stage 1:13 to 17. We fell behind when the Barrs got a second goal. We were back to a single point in arrears with a couple minutes to go but Barrs held on for a two point win 2:15 to 19 points.

The date and Time to be confirmed but probably Saturday evening in Rathcormac.
GREAT DAY IN LIMERICK.
It was a superb hurling occasion In Limerick on Sunday last with the Rebels showing that traditional Cork heart and courage. To go to the Shannon-side and take on the All Ireland and League Champions at home was a daunting task. Nor for the wearers of the Blood and Bandage jersies though as they were just brilliant. It is just 100 years ago since Cork first wore the Red jersies of the old Fr O Leary Hall GAA Club replacing the Saffron and Blue and seldom in that span of ten decades has a Cork side shown more guts and brilliant hurling than last Sunday. It was a great day for our parish as young Cameron Swalbe O Sullivan donned the Red jersey of Cork in the Primary Game- well done Cameron. Next up for the Cork Senior is a home tie v Waterford in two weeks time followed by an away game v Clare in ennis.
FEILE.
The All Ireland Under 14 Festival of Hurling is only two weeks away. We host Loughiel Shamrocks from Antrim for the Feile weekend. The Shamrocks are one of the most prominent hurling Clubs not just in Antrim but also in the province of Ulster. At adult level Loughiel have won the Antrim SHC on 20m occasions between 1920 and 2016. On 8 occasions they have captured the Ulster Club Championship. The Antrim Club have been crowned All Ireland Senior Club Champions twice, in 1983 and again in 2012. For Clubs like Loughiel hurling is far more than a game or a sport or a pastime. It represents their identity and culture and Irishness in a manner that few of us can imagine. The Shamrocks have a fantastic under-age structure in place which keeps producing top class players. Amongst the Club players who have played with Antrim are Niall Patterson, Dominic McKinley, Dominic McMullan, Aidan McCarry and Liam Watson. We will have games in the Feile v Loughiel Shamrocks, Mallow and the Offaly champions over the weekend. It promises to be great hurling few days.

The Bride Rovers Club extends it's deepest sympathy to the Ahern and Connor families of Monanig and the Madden family of Church View on the deaths of Julia May Ahern and Ansty madden. May they rest in peace.
WEEKLY CLUB LOTTO.
The Lotto Jackpot for Tuesday May the 14th was €20,000 and the four numbers drawn were 2,15,21 and 29- there was no Jackpot winner.
The prizes of €30 each went to Regina Walsh, Pat Moynihan, Brendan Ryan Limerick, Liam Murphy and Betty Hannon.
The Jackpot for last Tuesday May the 21st was €20,000. Tickets for the Weekly Lotto cost just €2 each and can be purchased from Club members and in local business outlets. Tickets can also be purchased online at locallotto.ie We are very grateful to each and everyone who regularly supports the Weekly Lotto as the funds raised are vital for the day to day running of the Club. An Annual Lotto Ticket can also be purchased for €90.

Run Around Every GAA Club in Cork.
Kevin Donovan ( his great, grandmother was Ellie Ryan, Ballinakilla) is running 1 mile in every GAA Club Grounds in County Cork. He is doing this marathon as a fundraiser for the Cork Deaf Association and Parkinson's Ireland. Kevin will be running at Pairc na Bride, Rathcormac at 7 o clock SHARP on tonight Thursday night May 23rd. Anyone that would like to run, jog or walk the mile are very welcome on the night to support two worthy causes.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL.
The Junior B C.ship in East Cork is on a Round Robin format this year. We've defeated Fr O Neills in the first game played in the competition to date. Ballinacurra are next up to play Fr O Neills. If Ballinacurra (the 2018 County JBFC Winners) win against Fr O Neills then both Ballinacurra and ourselves will have qualified for the semi finals but we might still g have to meet to determine ist and 2nd placings in the Group. In the County Under 21 FC we are in the semi final but we don't yet know who we will be meeting
EXAMS.
The Junior and leaving Cert Exams are just around the corner so we wish all those sitting for these Tests all the very best and happy Studying over the next week or so.
