Football Championships...
It's a case of Football on the double this week as we have Championship games in Junior B and Under 21. It's a busy football time. Tonight Thursday we have a home game against Glenville in the East Cork Division 2 Football League. On Saturday evening we face Ballycastle Gaels (Ballyhooley/ Castletownroche) in the quarter final of the County Championship in Fermoy at 7.30pm. We had a great campaign in East Cork defeating Carrigtwohill, St. Catherines and Cobh whilst the Ballycastle Gaels combination had an easy win in the Avondhu Final. Then on Tuesday next May 14th we face Fr O Neills in the first game in the East Cork Junior B Grade Football Championship. This fixture is down for Dungourney at half past seven. We wish both teams the very best of luck in these games.
County Division 1 Hurling league.
We had a long standing fixture against Erins Own in the County Hurling League for last Sunday- the game was fixed in February. During the week we were asked to change the day of the game and both Clubs agreed to Saturday night in Rathcormac. Then on Thursday came the news that Erins Own were conceding the game to us. We get the League points but the game is really what we wanted.
REBEL OG Under 12 Football League.
On Friday night 7:30 main pitch we played a very strong team, Duarigle Gaels- a combination team from the Duhallow Division in North West Cork.We were very slow to the ball always taking two attempts to catch it and our passing was intercepted by the slicker Combo team. In fairness the lads didn't give up trying to the end which was a credit to them. The second half we kept their score lower than first half but were beaten 4-12 to 0-2. We had a lot of disappointing lads going home but no doubt this experience will stand to them and help them . You often learn more from playing stronger sides than winning in a canter. Our next football under12 game is on this Friday night May 10th at 7:30 when we are home to City side St Michaels
Weekly CLUB LOTTO.
The Lotto Jackpot for Tuesday April 30th was €20,000 and the four numbers drawn were 7, 10, 20, 21 - there was no Jackpot winner.
The prizes of €30 each went to Donie Healy, Finnegan Family, Mgt O'Keeffe, John A. Murphy and Tom Mulcahy
The Jackpot for last Tuesday May the 7th was €20,000. Tickets for the Weekly Lotto cost just €2 each and can be purchased from Club members and in local business outlets. Tickets can also be purchased online at locallotto.ie
We are very grateful to each and everyone who regularly supports the Weekly Lotto as the funds raised are vital for the day to day running of the Club. An Annual Lotto Ticket can also be purchased for €90.
Cork v Tipperary on Sunday.
It's hard to imagine how many people were present in Glenagowl in 1741 when a Cork Hurling selection played a side from Co Tipperary in a challenge game. The previous two years had been very tough in Ireland with savage cold weather, heavy rain and crop failures resulting in a disastrous famine. Historians claim that the famine of 1740/1741 was actually worse than that of the 1840's because proportionally more people died. We'll never know exactly why the hurling game was played that autumn in Glenagowl, maybe for a wager between landlords or maybe as the late Tom Barry of Garrynacole thought, to mark a good harvest "the worst is over" and things were returning to normality once more. One way or another that's how the Cork v Tipperary 'story' began. It's a great sporting rivalry that seldom fails to deliver. At different periods in GAA history the two counties had periods of dominance over their rivals. In the last decade however it's been a razor-sharp rivalry with no team dominating these contests. It will be the same next Sunday as we anticipate another instalment of Premier v Rebel on the Banks of our Own Lovely Lee. I saw the pitch just last week and it looked magnificent after all the troubles and travails of the Spring.
Michael O Regan .
The sudden death of Michael O Regan of Mondaniel last week came as a terrible shock to the community and the parish. The O Regan family had run a garage business in Rathcormac and had only sold the premises last year. Michael was a native of Fermoy and with his wife Kathleen sons Nevin and Andy and daughter Irene lived in Mondaniel for many years. The family were involved in the business, sporting, religious and dramatic life of the community. A man of few words Michael was a deep thinker who composed poems which reflected life, love and family. Nevin played with Bride Rovers and of course in recent years as the O Connell grandchildren donned the green, white and gold jersey Michael and Kathleen became avid and enthusiastic followers and supporters. Michael was a valued member of the Rathcormac Parish Pastoral Council. We extend our deepest sympathy to Kathleen, Irene (O'Connell), Nevin and Andy, grandchildren Shauna, Ronan, Mollie, Gearoid, Ryan, Jamie and Tiernan, son-in-law Mark, daughters-in-law Karen and Jen, sisters Breda and Eileen, brothers John and Nelius, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends. May he rest in peace.
