Bride Rovers GAA Club Notes...

Under 21 A Hurling Final

This Saturday coming promises to be a hectic day with a County Under 14 Semi final and an East Cork Final. For the second year in a row our under 21 hurlers contest the East Cork Final at A grade level. Last year we were beaten by Castlelyons after a mighty game and on Saturday we face Carrigtwohill in the 2018 Final. This year Under 21 A championship was contested by 6 teams. A round robin format with two groups of three teams was decided upon. We were paired with St Catherines and Youghal while Carrig, Castlelyons and Watergrasshill were on the other side. We defeated St Catherines but then got a walk-over from Youghal. This meant we were group winners and faced Castlelyons in the semi final last week. Castlelyons finished in 2nd place in their group behind Carrigtwohill. In wet and windy conditions at Lisgoold last Saturday evening Carrig came from behind to defeat St Catherines, even though Carrig were missing their top forward, young Gosnell, who was out of the country on holidays. Carrig are an older team than our side with many of their players up to the age of 21. Carrig are always tough competitors and will be hard to beat. In actual fact the two semi finals were similar with both winners coming from behind. When we were seven points down against Castlelyons it looked ominous but the lads responded well to go on and win. The East Cork Final on Saturday is fixed for Lisgoold at 6 o clock, best of luck to the team and management.

PREMIER 1 UNDER 14 HURLING SEMI FINAL.

Our under 14 hurlers play St Finbarrs on Saturday in the County Premier Semi Final. The game had been fixed for Carrigaline at half 5 but with the U21 Final on at 6 and the Barrs playing County Senior Hurling Championship at half 3 this had to be changed. At the time of writing no time or venue has been arranged. Best of luck to the boys and their mentors.

PREMIER 2 MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Bride Rovers lost out to Fermoy in Premier 2 minor football championship last week. Played in Glenville on Thursday last Bride Rovers were second best to Fermoy after a hard hours football. Rovers struggled in all positions early on to a well fired up Fermoy who settled quickly with some fine points before Conor Barry registered our first score with a free. To add to our problems Fermoy scored their first goal before the interval to lead at the short whistle 1.7 to 0.4. The Rovers made an early in pact in the second half with some fine points but could not get through for the all important goal. Fermoy added further goals to run out comfortable winners. Though Conor Barry was successful from the penalty spot late in the game it was too little too late. For what started out so promising early in the year finished with a great degree of disappointment and let there be no doubt about it this is still a very good football team and glory days will come again. Panel: Ben Hogan, Rory O Sullivan, Matthew Quinn, Jordan Mannix, Kieran Kearney, Eoin Roche, Griffin O Keeney, Tom Murray, Conleith Ryan, Seamus Ahern, Cian Hogan, Brian Roche, Shaun Knox, Patrick O Flynn, Conor Barry, John O Sullivan, Michael Quinlan, Fergus Sheehan, Oisin Roche, John Buckley, Tomas Macek.

REBEL OG UNDER 11 HURLING LEAGUE.

Our Under 11 hurlers played a league game against Ballinhassig at home on last Saturday September the 8th at 11:30. In the first half  it was tit for tat with scores on either side,  Bride Rovers missing some fine goal chances which were  stopped by a very good Ballinhassig goal keeper. After a close opening period we were down by a single point at the short whistle. After a half time re-jig and pep talk the lads played better hurling in patches but conceded a goal and a few points early on in second half. Ballinhassig threatened to really take over but a great save by our goal keeper Conor O Riordan kept us in the match and we slowly started to win possession and get the scores from play.  Tomas O Riordan with a fine goal from play and couple of points from frees from Cormac Barry saw us right back in the match.  Jack Collins chipped in with points from frees also as Ballinhassig  started  to conceded frees as pressure was mounting. We got on top and we snuck the win at the end by 1-8 to 1-7.  First game this season where we experienced a drizzle - who would have thought it !!

TEAM: Adam Cronin, Adam Kelleher , Cillian O Sullivan, Conor Riordan , Cormac Barry, Darragh Delaney,  David O' Connell, Gearóid O' Connell, Jack Collins , Jack Hynes, Ronan Barry, Shane Prendergast, Sean Dowling,  Sean Madden, Thomas Hackett, Tomas O Riordan, Alexander Morey.

UNDER 9 HURLING

Our U9 boys travelled to a wet Inniscarra on Saturday last to play both Inniscarra and Clonakilty in hurling. We travelled with 20 boys so 3 teams entered and all had 3 games each. We acquitted ourselves very well, despite torrential rain developing. It is becoming more noticeable that the physicality is increasing and that our boys are standing up to this challenge. We have 1 football game remaining on Saturday 22nd v Nemo Rangers at Home. We will have 2 blitzes to finish the season in October but venues etc have yet to be finalised. Training continues Wed evenings and Saturday mornings.

WELL DONE CORK.

Cork camogie teams recorded a great double in Croke park on Sunday with the Intermediates defeating Down and the Seniors pipping Kilkenny. Congrats to all involved and especially to Jennifer Barry who was on the Intermediate team and also to Mossy O Sullivan who was an Intermediate Selector.

RUSSELL ROVERS WIN.

There's an old Irish Seanfhocail 'An rud is annamh is iontach' which translates as  'What is seldom is wonderful' and it well sums up East Cork Hurling Final Day last Sunday in Castlemartyr. Neither of the teams in the Final, St Itas and Russell Rovers had won the title before. Russell Rovers had been in two deciders and St Itas one. It was a marvellous occasion full of raw emotion with the Shanagarry / Ballycotton side emerging worthy winners. They defeated us recently in the East Cork Junior B Football final so they now face into two County campaigns with confidence. Well done Russell Rovers. Limerick winning the All Ireland was mighty but at the end of the day it's winning a Hurling Title with your Club after 94 years is really what makes the GAA great.

JERARD KENNY TOURNAMENT.

On this coming Saturday September 15th the Bride Rovers Juvenile Club will host the annual Jerard Kenny memorial  Hurling Tournament. We hope to have 6 under 11 teams competing. With clubs each team will have a minimum of 3 matches. It will be 11  a side with normal rules but full silence on the sideline -no shouting at referees will be tolerated.  First games at 10.30 am so everyone to be there at 10 am. All group games will start at the same time -start by hooter. It promise to be a great morning's hurling  in memory of the late Jerard Kenny who died tragically at a very young age. Jerard was a grand hurler and was on our first ever County winning under 12 team. Teas and coffees and refreshments will be served after the Tournament. Please come along and support the young hurlers.

1968/1969 TEAM REUNION.

On Friday Fortnight September the 28th we are holding a reunion event in the Rathcormac Inn to celebrate our Junior A grade hurling team of the 1968/1969 era. Fifty year ago they won the Jamesey Kelleher Cup and retained it the following year. The Club wants to honour those great hurlers and also to remember the players who are no longer with us. All Club players and members are invited to attend.
