Junior A Hurlers in action..

On this coming Sunday June 24th our Junior A Hurling team play Sarsfields in the first round of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship. It's our second XV and Sars third team but such is the strength of the Riverstown panel they will field a very strong team. We used just 15 players in the first round of the Senior Championship against Erins Own in April so we have a nice blend available for the Junior A team. In the Division 1 of the Junior H League we've played four games to date. We started with a defeat by Russell Rovers. Our next two games were against Lisgoold and Carrignavar and while we suffered defeats in both games we put in good displays and scored 1 18 and 2 13 respectively. Last week we travelled to Donoughmore to play the local side in a challenge game and had a narrow victory. On Monday night last June 18th we travelled to Aghavine in Ballymacoda to take on Fr O Neills in our fifth League tie. This was a rip roaring, free scoring contest with some great hurling produced by both teams. We won on a scoreline of 2 16 to 1 16.This was a welcome victory facing into the Championship tie on Sunday which is fixed for 4 o clock on Sunday afternoon in Watergrasshill. Sars have defeated both Russell Rovers and Carrignavar in the League so they will provide very tough opposition. Best of luck on Sunday lads, go for it. The panel of players against Fr O Neills was as follows; F. Hogan, T. O Sullivan, B. Collins, J.O Connor, D. Carr, S. Kearney, S. Boyce, C.Barry, DJ. Cahill, S.Ryan, D. Buckley, E.O hEochaidh, J. Mannix, B.Hogan, E. Murphy, S.Glasgow, S.O Flynn, G. O Keeney,C.Howard, J.Tobin, J.Kearney, D.Brown.

Fifth Place in Co SHL.

Bride Rovers are in fifth place in the RED FM sponsored 2018 Cork County Senior Hurling League following a close fought one point win over Newcestown on Friday night last in Pairc Na Bride. This was our tenth game in the League, we have three remaining games v Carrigtwohill, Bishopstown and Na Piarsaigh Daniel Dooley had the first score of the game on what was a cold night for the month of June. A Barry Johnson pointed free minutes later put us up two before Newcestown opened their account with a brace of points to draw level.
Shane O Connor scored the Rovers third point following a good move involving Jason Pratt. Newcestown struck for the only goal of the game when a defensive mix up resulted in the ball breaking to the Newcestown corner forward who duly tapped home to the Rovers net.
Further disaster came for the Rovers when goalkeeper Jerome O Driscoll was dismissed. Frank Hogan came on in goals with Stephen Boyce unfortunate to be replaced. Points were swapped from here to the interval as Newcestown extended their lead to four points. The Rovers points coming from the hurleys of Barry Johnson and Michael Collins. Half-time score Bride Rovers 0-05 Newcestown 1-06
The Rovers got off to a great start in the second half, two pointed frees from William Finnegan, a 65 from Barry Johnson and a point from Conleith Ryan saw the Rovers draw level after 35minutes. The Rovers hit the front when William Finnegan added another pointed free and soon after Conleith Ryan had his second of the game. The defence were well on top now and managed to keep Newcestown scoreless for 20 minutes. William Finnegan added another free before Newcestown had their first scores of the half with two white flags from frees frees. In typical Newcestown fashion they made it tough for the Rovers and drew level 1-10 to 0-13 with minutes left but a point from the impressive Shane O Connor at midfield secured the win for the Rovers on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 0-14 Newcestown 1-10.
Team & Scorers J. O’Driscoll, E.Roche, B.Walsh, R.Prendergast, S.Boyce, B.Murphy, S.Walsh, S.O’Connor (0-2), J.Pratt,  M.Collins (0-1), C.Ryan (0-2), D.Dooley (0-1), W.Finnegan (0-4, 4F), B.Roche  B.Johnson (0-4, 3F).

Cork Minor Hurlers Out

Despite a great display and a 15 point victory over Waterford the Cork Minor Hurlers involvement in the Munster Championship ended in Thurles last Sunday. We needed Clare to beat Limerick to stay in contention but the Banner lost narrowly to the Treaty boys so Limerick and Tipperary are in the Munster Final. Well done to all involved with the Minor team including our own Patrick O Flynn..

Cork under 21's.

Well done to Eoin Roche on being selected on the Cork under 21 hurling panel for last nights game v Waterford.

Cork Seniors.

It's a July 1st Thurles Munster Final date with Clare for the Cork Hurlers after defeating Waterford last Sunday. Cork are in an ideal place going into the Final. The display v Waterford was patch but a win is win. Last year Cork defeated Clare in the provincial Final so the banner will be all out for revenge this year.

There are no games fixed for  next week so far.  Panel;  Frank  Flynn, Eldon O Connor, Liam Collins,  Cormac O Sullivan, David Barry, Conor Hazelwood, Nicky Kelleher, Ronan O Connell, Cillian Tobin, Denis Cashman, Adam Walsh, Adam Hayes, Ryan O Callaghan, Louis Roche, Josh Ahern, Adam Hynes, Ben Knox, Jack Keating, Cillian Barry, Luke Harrington

Under 11 Hurling.

We played St Catherine's away on Saturday 16th in the u11 H League..  We had a tough first half against the wind and after conceding two goals we were 2 4 to 3 points down at half time
With   the wind  in the second half we fought back brilliantly to come within a point of St Catherines with some fine team work and great scores. Unfortunately the final whistle came a small bit too early and we lost by a few points after a great game which was  very close.

Under 9's

Our U9 side took on Kiltha Og in their most recent game last Saturday afternoon in Castlemartyr. We had 18 boys togged out and played 2 games each. The boys were slow to start but once they got themselves warmed up were difficult to stop. A great performance from all 18 on the day. We've football training this Wednesday night at 7pm in Pynes. We're down to play Mitchelstown and St. Colmans this Saturday morning June 23rd at home. Time to be decided.

Under 8 Football.

Our u8's played a football blitz in Carrigtwohill on Saturday.  We had three teams and they all played very well. Next blitz is hurling in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sat week June 30th.   A reminder to all our young players that the 2018 Cul Camp runs from the 23rd to the 27th July this year. Please apply online at  https://www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie

UNDER 7's.

The Under 7s have  training each  Wednesday for Hurling from  6.30 to 7.30 and football training is on from 10 to 11 Saturdays.

We have a Blitz this weekend on Saturday June 23rd in Glenville at 9.30am

Under 6's Hurling and Football.

Training continues each week for our under 6 players as follows; Hurling training every Saturday 10 to 11. Football training every Wednesday  6.30 to 7.30. All youngsters are invited. We ask parents to bring along their sons, Gaelic Games are to be enjoyed with friends and neighbours and in Bride Rovers we welcome everyone. Sometimes when people move into a 'new' area they may find it a little difficult to integrate so getting involved in the GAA is a great opportunity to meet new people in a fun atmosphere. Each year our club runs a Cul Camp where the skills of hurling and football are learned with Games Coaches in attendance. This year the 2018 Cul Camp runs from the 23rd to the 27th July this year. Brideside Ramblings.

Well Derek McGrath has resigned after five years at the helm with Waterford. The Decies have been one of the top teams in the country under McGrath's stewardship, He took a lot of flak for embracing the sweeper system but in hindsight they were so close to winning the All Ireland last year. They won a National Hurling League title but the McCarthy Cup still eluded them. They may have a few retrials but if the six or seven injured players are back for 2019 they will still be a major force down South.
