Footballers lose first game...

Bride Rovers Junior Footballers travelled to Shanagarry for a top of the table clash with local side Russell Rovers- to date both sides had been unbeaten in the East Cork Division 3 Junior Football league. Bride got off to a great start and led three points to no score after 10 minutes with the points coming from William Finnegan (2) and Terry Broderick. Russell Rovers pointed two frees to reduce the deficit before Cian O Connor was fouled in the square to win a penalty which William Finnegan duly despatched to the net. At half time Bride Rovers led 1-04 to 0-3 having played some great football . Into the second half and it was the home side who seized the initiative and quickly had reduced our lead to a single point before Brian Hartnett finished to the net. Brideside Ramblings.

Well the old saying that meant an idyllic summer in Cork was 'Tipp bate and the hay saved' -after last Sunday it's a case of Tipp half-bate with the draw in Thurles and God is good for the hay!  I remember being at  the drawn game and replay between Cork and Tipp in 1972. I travelled with pad Connors, Dan Dooley and the late Dave Ryan to those games. Going to the drawn game in Limerick I recall we stopped at a small country pub as Dave wanted a pint. There was no inside toilet and when I went 'out the back' there in the little yard behind the bar was a hen with one leg and a sheep with one eye!  Cork won the replay and then easily defeated Clare in the Munster Final. Cork reached the All Ireland Final. I can remember well the same four passengers coming home from the Al Ireland semi final. We were nearly home and coming around by the Dipping Tub in Ballinterry Dave asked 'Well the Rovers are in the East Cork Final (v Dungourney) and Cork are in the All Ireland Final, well John which Final would you rather win?' I said I hope d we'd win the two of 'em! As it turned out we lost both Finals!

That year of 1972 was the first year since 1965 that the Rovers Junior Hurling team lined out in the East Cork Championship without Seanie Barry in the team so we were nervy enough facing Sars in the first round. We were lucky enough to win the game by 2 18 to 4 10. We defeated Cloyne's second string by 2 25 to 13 in the second round with Gussie O Driscoll scoring 13 points. That win put us in the semi final. We defeated Aghada in Carrigtwohill by 2 10 to 2 9. This victory in August meant we were in the East cork Final for the first time since 1969. It was October before we got to play the Final.

It's a new experience that will face Cork Hurling fans this coming weekend with an evening game v Limerick. With a win and a draw one more 'point' under this new Round Robin system would ensure that, at worst, Cork would get into the Top Three in Munster. A win Saturday on night would mean a Munster Final spot. The position of the Cork Minors is all to play for with a win over Clare and a heavy defeat last Sunday Cork simply must win at least one of their two remaining games v Limerick Saturday afternoon or against Waterford two weeks later. We wish Patrick O Flynn and his Cork team mates all the best on Saturday.
