Well Done Patrick...

It was a proud day for our club last Sunday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh when Patrick O Flynn lined out at full-forward for the Cork Minor Hurling team. Cork had a thrilling victory over Clare after a very close game in which the Banner looked likely winners for a long time. In the last quarter however the Cork side got on top and won by a margin of four points 0 26 to 3 13. Patrick O Flynn played a major part in the Cork victory, scoring 2 points and being involved in several other scores for the Rebels. The concession of three goals in the first half left Cork in a precarious position but with some brilliant point scoring the Cork forwards brought the team right back into contention before that thrilling finish. Well done to Patrick and his team-mates who now face Tipperary next Sunday in Thurles. They have Limerick at home the following Saturday night and then a fortnight later they play the Decies in Thurles. Last Sunday was a great day for Patrick and his family -he comes from great stock,  the O Flynns, Gettings, Fentons and Cody families have all been major contributors to the sporting and community life in North East Cork over many decades. It was in April 1933 that the Bride Rovers Club was first represented on the Cork Minor Hurling team. In Tralee on April 23rd four Bride Rovers players, Tom Hoskins (Capt), Mossy Collins, Jack Barry and Jimmy O Brien lined out in the Red and White of Cork in their 4 3 to 0 3 victory over Kerry. Patrick O Flynn carries on that proud tradition started in Tralee eighty five years ago.

RED FM Senior Hurling League.

Bride Rovers picked up two valuable league points with a seven point win over Bandon in Rathcormac last Thursday night. This RED FM sponsored league match was delayed due to there being no referee but special thanks to James Birmingham for starting the game and Avondhu referee Justin Murphy from Castletownroche who travelled from Bishopstown to take over from James and complete the game. Back to the game and it was Daniel Dooley who had the first score with a well taken point, Bandon equalised from a free before William Finnegan (free) and Brian Roche restored the Rovers lead. The Bandon forwards were a constant threat, Adam Murphy and Darren Crowley pointed for Bandon while Barry Johnson (65), Conleith Ryan and two pointed frees from William Finnegan had the Rovers in front 0-07 to 0-04 after fifteen minutes. Brian Roche added his second white flag and from here to half time all six of the Rovers scores came from William Finnegan, four from frees, a 65 and one from play. This had the Rovers in front by 0-14 to 0-08 for Bandon at half-time. We seemed to be slow getting in to our stride in  the second half and Bandon score five points to our two to leave just three points between the sides. The introduction of Michael Collins had the desired effect as he ran onto a great pass from Barry Johnson to score a wonderful goal. Further points from Michael Collins, Einne Ó hEochaidh, Brian Roche and  Daniel Dooley completed the scoring for the Rovers. Final score Bride Rovers 1-20 Bandon 0-16.With this win we moved up to 6th place in the RED FM SHL. This year the Senior Hurling League has a new format with the  bottom placed two teams being  relegated. This was a vital win, well done lads.

Brideside Ramblings.

With the Tony Walsh Hurling Tournament coming up next month it's interesting to see that exactly fifty years ago in 1968 the Tournament 'scene' was hugely important for GAA Clubs. That year Bride Rovers played in Hurling Tournaments in Rathcormac, Bartlemy, Dungourney, Bridesbridge, Conna and Watergrasshill.

With our own Patrick O Flynn on the Cork Minor team v Clare last Sunday there was a great Rovers crowd present in Cork for the two games. We had direct links with three of the Cork Senior team. Conor Lehane's father Matty played for the Rovers for many years as did Conor's grand uncle Micheal Cranitch. An interesting fact is that Micheal Cranitch (UCC) and Jim McCarthy (UCD) were the first two players ever to get their 'marching orders' in a Fitzgibbon Cup Final. This happened in the 1938 Final which UCD won - Cranitch had to be hospitalised for a head wound which required several stitches. Youghal's Bill Cooper connection with the parish was that his great, grandmother was a Murphy girl who married 'out of the Rings Cross' Public House to John Gowen of Capapgh, Ballyhooley. Colm Spillane's great grandfather was Paddy McHugh of Ballinwillin, Bartlemy. We send best wishes to both Cork teams in Thurles next Sunday.
