Under 11's Beat The Rockies.

On last Saturday in ideal weather conditions Blackrock were visitors to Pairc na Bride for an Under 11 Rebel Og hurling contest. This was a great game of hurling between two gallant teams. Our lads played very well with great passing movements and crisp hurling. A feature of the contest was the mighty support play and intelligent running off the ball. We were in control in the first half but the Rockies came into the game much more in the second half. We won on a scoreline of 3 6 to 1 4 and would have scored more only for the Blackrock goalie who made some super saves. Well done lads.Team panel v Blackrock.; Adam Cronin, Adam Kelleher, Cormac Barry , Conor O Riordan , Darragh Delaney , David O Connell , Jack Collins , Jack Hynes, Ronan Barry, Sean Dowling, Thomas  Hackett, Tomas O Riordan , Shane O Dowd & Denis Fitzgerald

EAST CORK JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

The 2018 junior B football championship campaign began last Wednesday (May 9th) with an away game to Glanmire in Sallybrook.  This championship is a round-robin style tournament, with Bride Rovers in a group with Glanmire and Glenville.  We had a good first half, going in at half-time with a one point lead.  Ken Drury opened the scoring with a good point from play.  This was followed by another point from play from William Finnegan.  William had his shooting boots on as he finished the first half with two well taken points from frees. At the short whistle it was Bride Rovers  0-4, Glanmire  0-3.  While we started strongly in the second half, we failed to score and found ourselves behind after ten minutes.  A litany of wides was finally ended when William Finnegan converted a free.  He quickly followed this up with a point from play. Glanmire then dominated the game and built up a two point lead with five minutes to go, leading 0-9 to 0-7.  Two good points from play from captain Daniel Dooley and centre-back Shane O'Connor levelled the game as we neared full-time.  Glanmire were awarded a free in front of the Bride Rovers goal to go a point ahead as the game entered injury time.  The resulting kick-out found it's way to Shane Walsh who went on a seventy yard solo run before being fouled.  William Finnegan scored from this free to leave the sides level at 0-10 apiece. While at times we were very impressive on the ball, we didn't convert all our chances, and it took a lot of resolve and character to eventually gain a draw.  As the game doubled as a JFL Div. 3 league match, we maintained our unbeaten run and are now joint leaders of the league with Castlemartyr.  Our next championship game will be with neighbours Glenville, who take on Glanmire this Friday night in Rathcormac. Team: Ben Hogan, Griffin O'Keeney, Shane Walsh, Jordan Mannix, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Shane O'Connor, Jason Pratt, William Finnegan, Daniel Dooley, DJ Cahill, Liam Forde, Richard Cahill, Damien Buckley, Ken Drury, Shane O'Flynn, Conor Barry, Terry Broderick.

On Sunday evening last at Pairc Na Bride, Bride Rovers had 3 point win over Ballyhea in the RED FM Sponsored Senior Hurling League. This was our first Senior game since the championship defeat by Erins Own It was a gripping contest from start to finish played in a competitive manner by both teams.Ballyhea opened the scoring with a pointed free from their star player Pa O’Callaghan, Conleith Ryan levelled matters before a brace pf white flags from Barry Johnson had the Rovers in front. Points from John and  Gavin Morrissey and Maurice O’Sullivan had Ballyhea in front by a margin of three before Barry Johnson scored a goal from a penalty following a foul on Conleith Ryan. Daniel Dooley added a point moments later. A great run by Shane O’Connor from midfield saw him blast the ball to the Ballyhea net and with William Finnegan raiding a white flag, the Rovers were up by four points. Ballyhea reduced the deficit to the minimum by half time with points from Pa O’Callaghan and Maurice O’Sullivan, the Rovers last score of the half coming from a long range free by Barry Johnson. The half time score was; Bride Rovers 2-06 Ballyhea 0-11.On the resumption Daniel Dooley and William Finnegan extended the Rovers lead, once again Ballyhea responded with two points of their own. Éinne O hEochaidh was beginning to exert his influence on the game at full forward and following a great catch was dragged to the ground for a penalty which Barry Johnson duly converted. The Rovers defensive unit of Tadhg O’Sullivan, Brendan Walsh and Ryan Prendergast were playing well and ably assisted by Brian Murphy, Jason Pratt and Shane Walsh. Points from Barry Johnson (free) and Griffin O’Keeney extended the Rovers advantage. However Ballyhea were never out of this game and added three more points. The Rovers were leading by two entering the last 10 minutes but 5 points, three from William Finnegan  frees and  Michael Collins points ensured a Rovers victory on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 3-16 Ballyhea 0-22.Team and Scorers J. BUSY,BUSY,BUSY.

Brideside Ramblings.

Well it's Munster Hurling Time again but I am not inclined to use the phrase 'Munster Championship' time. After thrilling provincial Hurling championships in Munster and Leinster last year with two counties in contention for honours all's changed, utterly changed this year. 1972 was the first year I went to a Munster Hurling Senior game. After beating Waterford we drew with Tipp in the semi-final in Limerick that year before winning the replay and defeating Clare in the Provincial Final. We beat Waterford and Tipperary so they were gone from the Munster championship but this year what we have is really a Munster league. In my mind it's an awful shambles of a set-up. Imagine a County could lose two games in Munster this year and depending on other results, scoring differences etc could still qualify for the Munster Final. A County could then lose that Munster Final. That County could then go on and win the All Ireland Final- after losing three games, what a farce! The cut and thrust is now gone. Will twenty or twenty five thousand fans from Clare flock Leeside this coming Sunday? No way because losing to great rivals like Cork wont put them out of the Munster Championship, so why call it a Munster Championship game at all?

Ed Went Well.

It was great weekend in Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the Ed Sheeran Concerts with a happy, fun-filled atmosphere. The three Concerts went off like clockwork with no problems or hassle which was great for a 'new' Concert venue.

Rathcormac v Ballyhea Hurling 'Firsts' 1903.

Last Sunday Bride Rovers and Ballyhea played a thrilling Senior League game on the banks of The Bride. The teams were drawn against each other in the 1903 Hurling Championship. The game was fixed for Castletownroche on Sunday 23rd of August at 2.30 with Fermoy and Mitchelstown in the Football c,ship at 3.30. At the Co Board Meeting the following Tuesday night Mr J. Morley (Fermoy) the referee appointed to take charge of the game reported that Rathcormac took the field at 2.30 but there was no sign of Ballyhea so he awarded the game to Rathcormac. Ballyhea were written to and at the next Board Meeting they replied that hey had been informed the game was fixed for the Cork Exhibition Grounds in Cork City. On the Saturday night before the match the Chairman of the Board had 'wired' (sent a telegram) to Ballyhea informing them of the change of venue. The Ballyhea letter claimed it was then too late to inform their players. It was agreed to refix the game and award Rathcormac Club £1 in expenses. The Rathcormac Club were unhappy with this sum and threatened to appeal to the Munster Council! The sum was doubled to £2 . The game was eventually refixed for Castletownroche on Sunday October the 4th when Ballyhea won.
