BRIDESIDE RAMBLINGS.

Most GAA fans haven't yet turned their thought towards the All Ireland finals of this year yet. On the other hand those who have a passionate interest  in Amateur Drama are enjoying this week. Since Friday night last the All Ireland Three Act Drama Finals are going ahead in the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone. This year there is huge local interest in the Finals as two local groups Brideview of Tallow and Ballyduff are contesting the All Ireland. Though both Drama Groups are based in West Waterford they have plenty connections with our parish. On Sunday night last Ballyduff were on stage with 'Albertine in Five Times' a play originally  written in French by Canadian writer Michael Tremblay. Both Valerie O Leary and Grainne Barry were two of the play's cast of 6. Valerie is one of the best actors on the acting circuit in Munster and O Leary family members have been active with Bride Rovers both on the playing fields and in Club Administration. Grainne Barry's grandfather Jack, a native of Bride St, Rathcormac, was on the Bride Rovers team that won the County Minor Hurling Championship in 1932.  The Brideview Drama Group are on stage in Athlone on this Friday night May11th with their performance of 'Stolen Child'. The mainstay of the Tallow group is veterinary surgeon Jack Ahern who is this year's producer. Jack lived in Rathcormac in the earl 1980's and won two East Cork Junior Hurling League medals with the Rovers in 1981 and 1982. The results of the Competition will be announced in Athlone on Saturday night so we wish both Ballyduff and Brideview all the very best.

With a meeting to be held on Monday night to consider starting an Athletic Club in the Parish it brings memories of athletic 'movements' of days of yore'. For decades the Kildinan Athletic Club was one of the most prominent clubs in Ireland and won the National Cross Country Title in 1943. When the Bride Rovers Club was formed in 1928 they took over the running of Rathcormac Sports. Tim Regan who ran a shop across from the church in Rathcormac (later Cotters, O Callaghans & Kellehers) was the main man behind the Sports. Tim was a great PRO and believed in the power of advertising in a big way! For the 1929 Sports he put the following add in the Cork Examiner on Saturday June 29th;

Rathcormac Annual Sports will be held to-morrow (Sunday( June 30th. marathon race will start in village at 12.45pm. Field events at 1.45(old time)

Rathcormac Sports to-morrow. The 1928 men who attended Rathcormac Sports last year were so pleased with their visit that they have wired saying that the nineteen hundred and twenty nine men with their wives and families are leaving for Rathcormac this evening.

Rathcormac Sports to-morrow. The man who never laughed is coming there. Substantial reward to the first person who'll 'spot' him during the obstacle or wheelbarrow races. Don't bother about your dinner. Jack Barry's refreshment tent will be on the grounds. Sure after reading that people would flock to the Sports out of curiosity if nothing else!

Bartlemy Point to Point Races are on next Sunday May 13th. It was at Bartlemy one hundred and five years ago, in 1913, that famed Dungourney hurler and horseman Jamesy Kelleher took on the Redcoat 'gentry' riders in a race and beat them all.
