Playing Season Opens.
The 2018 playing season opened for Bride rovers last Saturday night. On a raw evening in the Top Field in Cobh we met the home team in a Junior Football League Division 3 tie. The last time we played Cobh in a February Football League game was back in 1986! On the 21st of December 1985 we had drawn with Cobh - 0 5 each in the East Cork JBFL Final played in Lisgoold. The replay was the following February- February 23rd when Cobh won easily by 3 14 to 0 1, both clubs were fined 10 for being late! We hadn't played league Football since 2015 so we made a winning return to football league on Saturday night after an absence of three years. Playing in tough conditions, the team overcame a two point deficit in the last quarter to win by four points. Having played with a strong breeze at our backs in the first half, it looked ominous when we were only drawing at half-time, having scored five points to Cobh's goal and two points. The Bride Rovers scores in the first half came from the boots of Terry Broderick, Ryan Prendergast, and Stephen Pratt. Cobh went into a two point lead in the first ten minutes of the second half, but failed to score after this, in large part because of some excellent defending from the Bride Rovers full-back and half-back lines. At times our lack of football practice showed in the first half, but this was more than compensated for in the second half with some excellent passages of play, and a solid work ethic from the goalkeeper to the corner forward. Having drawn level with Cobh with ten minutes remaining, a good Bride Rovers attack ended with a penalty being awarded. Jerome O'Driscoll stepped up and coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. This was followed up by a point from Ken Drury to put us four points ahead. Cobh could not break down the defence over last five minutes, and we won on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-4. The next league game will be played on Monday, February 19th, in Fouhy Park, Glenville at 7.45
Team: Frank Hogan, Colm Howard, Shane Walsh, Griffin O'Keeney, Tadgh O'Sullivan, Ryan Prendergast, Diarmuid O'Keeffe, Damien Buckley, Stephen Pratt, William Finnegan, Terry Broderick, Daniel Dooley, Cian Howard, Ken Drury, Richie Cahill, Adrian Buckley, Jerome O'Driscoll, Shane O'Connor.
