Death of a Legend -Bill Gubbins...

Bill Gubbins of Ballyoneen, Bartlemy died on Sunday last. He was born in 1928, the year the Bride Rovers Club was formed. He grew up with a deep interest in everything local and rural in his native place. He loved athletics, Gaelic games and drama in a special way. During his teenage years the Bride Rovers Club met with little success but that never dimmed Bill's support for the Green, White and Gold. Like many people in the parish the era of 1966 to 1969 was a reward for all the barren years. When we won the Junior B Grade in 66 and two A Grade Titles in 1968 and 69 Bill was thrilled. Since those heady days Bride Rovers have enjoyed unprecedented susses on the playing fields of Cork and Bill Gubbins was one great follower. In recent years when unable to attend all the games he was an avid listener to games on the radio.  From the time he first 'took to the boards' on stage with the Kaime Sports Committee in a fund-raising play over 60 years ago Bill became one of the best known actors in amateur dramatics in North East Cork. He was stalwart of groups in Bartlemy and had a particular gra for everything associated with Bartlemy Parish Hall. As well as acting with Bartlemy Drama Group Bill also took part in productions in Lisgoold, Dungourney and Watergrasshill. Then in the early 2000's we asked Bill to take part with the Bride Rovers Scor Novelty Act. For several glorious years Bill and the Scor group had a brilliant adventure. Bill won five East Cork titles, three Counties and a Munster Title. That Munster win saw us qualify for The All Ireland Final in Killarney in 2005. We didn't win but what great times we had. For a man in his mid 70's Bill Gubbins was enthusiastic as a young fella. He loved the travelling, the craic, the company and win or lose he was thrilled to be involved. He loved the stage and storytelling and was so proud and happy to bring such success to the Bride Rovers Club. Whatever Draw or Raffle or Fund-raising venture we undertook Bill was always to the fore with encouragement and financial support. I remember a few short years ago coming back from a concert, I think 'twas in Gortroe, Bill said to Frances O Riordan and myself " I think I'm finally going to retire from this, though I love it,  but let ye keep going and encourage the youth too". Bill, you were our inspiration, our Oscar Winner, our Seanachai but most of all our great friend. As old as the Club Bill Gubbins was proud of his family, his clan, his parish and Bride Rovers- his Club. We extend our deepest sympathy to Bill's wife Maureen, daughter Mary, son-in-law John, grandchildren, sister, nephews, nieces and his many friends. You have handed us a proud and rich tradition to be given to future generations, thanks Bill.
