Junior Lose Out in Extra Time Thriller...

So near and yet so far could well sum up a thrilling East Cork Junior C Hurling Championship Final in Killeagh last Sunday. With 62 minutes gone in the game we were 1 14 to 0 14 ahead. With the final whistle just seconds away we were in with a great chance of retaining the title for a third year in a row. Then Cobh scored a last gasp goal from a free to make it 1 14 apiece and the whistle went on the puckout. Extra time followed and though we battled hard it was Cobh who went on to win by

Of course it's tough to lose a game when we nearly had it won but great credit to all our lads who put in a tremendous display not just on Sunday but all season.

The first half was very evenly contested. Stephen Boyce had our first point followed by four from Jerome -two from frees. With team Captain Brian Lahive, Joe Delaney and mark O Connell playing superbly in front of Maurice Dooley the half back line of  Jim. Pa and Gavin pressed forward to help  Stephen and Jamie at midfield. We had plenty supply up in the forwards but the Cobh defence were very tight.  A Colm Power point in the 20th minute pushed us 0 6 to 0 5 ahead. Richie and Alan had good shots saved before Jerome made it 7 points each. Donal Ryan hit a rasper which seemed bound for the net but it just flew over the bar for our eight point. Cobh then had two white flags to lead by 0 9to 0 8 at the break. For the restart we seemed to have a slight wind advantage but it was Cobh who had two early points to lead by  011 to  0 8. Terry  Broderick hit a superb point which started a period of dominance when we took over. We scored  1 5 on the trot- the goal coming from Jerome after a great passing movement. This put us 1 13 to 0 11 ahead after the third quarter ended.  Cobh fought back strongly with three point to reduce our lead to two, 1 13 to 0 14 with just thrre minutes to go. A pass from Colm to Jerome saw the white flag raised and we were three ahead as the hour just finished. It seemed as we might hold out but at the very wend Cobh got the late, late equaliser to take the contest to extra time. In the first ten minute period Cobh had three points while Jerome's penalty shot for a goal was saved.  Cobh got well on top in the last ten minutes and went five ahead before a Donal Ryan goal brought it back to two. Cobh had a further goal and went on to win by 3 19 to 2 17. For the last Sunday of November it was a tremendous game with the Killeagh pitch in great order. Well done to Cobh. Thanks to all our players who put in a great championship campaign and lost nothing in defeat. Well done lads and also to Billy, Sham, James and Dave.

CONFUSION OVER MINOR FINAL.

The East Region Rebel Og Minor hurling League Final fixed for Sunday evening was not played. The game v Ballygarvan was fixed for 6 0 clock under lights in Ballincollig but Ballygarvan refused to play. Normally when a fixture is ratified if one team refuses to fulfil the fixture it is awarded to the other team so we await developments.

AGM ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

The Annual General meeting of the Club will be held in Bartlemy Parish hall on this coming Friday night December the 1st at 8pm. The AGM is a time to reflect on the past season and plan for the year ahead.  On the playing season 2017 was a season of mixed fortunes. In Football we made no real impact in Junior B , Under 21 and Minor and this situation must receives a lot of input for next year. In total we played Just 32 adult games in League and Championship losing in the second round of the Junior and defeating just Avondhu in the Co SHC  and losing to Glen Rovers and Duhallow. WE participated only in Phase 1 of the SHL with just 6 games. Our Junior A Hurlers got to the League final, losing to Sars but getting promotion to Div 1 for 2018. Our Junior C team had great wins over Lisgoold and Sars before losing out in a great final to Cobh.   We had great success at under 212 level before losing the East Cork Final to Castlelyons. Under the auspices of the Juvenile Club the under 16 and Minor teams won County Championships. Brian and Eoin Roche were on both the Cork Under 17 and Minor Hurling teams winning Munster titles with both and the All Ireland Under 17 title when they were joint captains.

Major development work has commenced in the pitch and as we build towards the Centenary of the Club in 2028 huge investment and development plans will shortly be unveiled. The AGM is open to all. If you are a member or a player do come. If you are not a member or a supporter we want you to join with us in Bride Rovers so please come along on Friday night. We are a Club for everyone and we want everyone to enjoy being involved in the GAA in our parish.

WEEKLY CLUB LOTTO.

Cork GAA  Convention.

The annual Convention of the Cork GAA Board will be held in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday December the 10th. The Convention will mark the end of Ger Lane's three year term as County Board chairman, a period of major development in Cork GAA.
