Double Win For Juniors & Seniors

It proved to be a great week for the football fortunes of Bride Rovers Ladies Football Club.

On Wednesday night Katie Quirke & Sarah Murphy were part of the Cork U16 team that defeated Cavan in the All-Ireland semi-final. On Friday night our Junior Football team scored a one point win over Banteer in the championship. Saturday afternoon saw Cork Minors in action v Tyrone where Grace Culloty & Sarah Murphy played their part in a 2 point win. To round off the week the Seniors football team made it 2 wins from 2 with a hard fought win over Eire Óg in the Senior Championship.

Senior Championship: Bride Rovers 3-04 Éire Óg 0-09

Bride Rovers Senior Ladies Footballers travelled to Ovens on Monday last to play Éire Óg in their 2nd game in the Senior Championship. The pitch in Ovens was looking immaculate on a warm evening for football. In the opening half the Rovers while playing good football failed to convert the countless chances they created. A total of 9 wides and 3  more hitting the upright left us with a first half score of one point. At the other end of the field our defence and midfield done a superb job to keep us in the game and restrict Éire Óg forwards to four points.

In the second half our forwards began to take their chances, Katie Quirke pointed 2 frees before Katie Connor blasted to the net to put us in front by a point. Éire Óg quickly equalised before Katie Quirke grabbed the Rovers second goal. Éire Óg fought back but a thrid Rovers goal by Katie Quirke and a well taken point by Jen Cahill ensured a Rovers victory on a scoreline of 3-04 to 0-09.

Team: C.Vaughan, M.Hartnett, E.Collins, N.Barry, A.O'Riordan, T.O'Sullivan, L.Quirke, J.Barry, G.Kearney, E.Roche, G.Culloty, J.Cahill, E.Culloty, K.Quirke, K.Connor.

Our next game in this championship is against Bantry but no date has been finalised for this.

Junior Championship: Bride Rovers 0-13 Banteer 1-09

Our Junior Ladies made the trip to Banteer last friday for their opening game in the Junior Championship against a highly fancied Banteer team. In what can only be described as a bruising encounter the Rovers were under pressure from the start. Banteer had a goal and 2 points to the good before Katie kelleher opening the Rovers account. Further points from Emma Barry, Jess O'Riordan reduced Banteers lead to a point. Katie Kelleher levelled the game with a pointed free before Banteer added their third point to lead again. It was all about the Barry's for the last 10 minutes of the half with sisters Jennifer & Emma both getting two point s a piece, Emma who was having a great game scored 3 wonderful points from tight angles.

So having being down 5 points after 5 minutes we were now up 2 points at half time. Bride Rovers 0-08 Banteer 1-03

As expected the Banteer onslaught came in the second half, with the Rovers failing to score in the first 20 minutes of the second half, Banteer added 6 poiints to their tally to lead by 4 entering the final 10 minutes. But in fairnes to the Rovers they never gave up and dug deep to get back in the game led by captain Katie Kelleher who scored 3 points in those final few frantic minutes that saw 2 players from Banteer sin binned and one from the Rovers. A point from Jen Barry had the teams level before Mary Hazelwood popped up to score the all important winner for the Rovers.

Team: C.Hickey, T.O'Neill, A.O'Callaghan, A.Cashman, A.O'Connor, E.O'Keeffe, E.Larkin, J.Barry, S.O'Sullivan, M.Hazelwood, J.O'Riordan, K.Kelleher, E.Barry, I.Dorgan, L.Pratt, K.Sheehan, C.Ahern.
