Cracking game of football...

Bride Rovers 3-11 Fermoy 0-18

On Monday night last in St.Colmans College pitches, the Senior Ladies Footballers of Bride Rovers & Fermoy played out a cracking game of football.

Credit to both teams for the skill shown on the night with some excellent scores, heroic defending and super saves by both keepers.

The Rovers were first to score with a point from Grace Culloty, Fermoy responded with two points of their own. Grace Culloty added a second to level matters.

The Rovers defensive unit of Evelyn Collins, Michelle Hartnett, Niamh Barry, Aoife O Riordan, Trish O'Sullivan and captain Laura Quirke were playing very well & working hard for each other. They were well supported by Eleanor & Grace in midfield.

With Fermoy 2 points in front Grace Culloty struck for a goal to put the Rovers in front. Further points from Katie Quirke, Grace Culloty & Grace Kearney extended our lead. On the stroke of half time we got a great boost when Katie Quirke was quickest onto a breaking ball setup by Jessica O'Riordan to grab the Rovers second goal. At half time we led 2-07 to 0-08.

As expected Fermoy came at us in the second half, a fast counter attack involving Jen Cahill & Elaine Culloty ended with a great point from Katie Quirke. The game ebbed & flowed as both sets of attackers notched up some fine scores. Jen Barry, Jen Cahill & Grace Culloty added on more points for the Rovers. With the Rovers lead reduced to 2 points Grace Culloty struck for that all important goal to seal the win. Well done to both teams on a fine game of football.

On Sunday evening, the u14 ladies football team played at home to Douglas in the quarter final of the County D Championship. From the outset, it was clear that Douglas were at a vastly higher level to the home side and it was never going to be a competitive encounter. Despite the best efforts of our defenders and goalkeeper, who battled valiantly, the visitors notched up score after score, whilst at the other end of the pitch, our mid fielders and forwards found it difficult to crack the Douglas defence.

Despite being well behind on the score board throughout the game, Bride Rovers to their credit never dropped the heads but continued to compete strongly for every ball and worked tirelessly as a team to make an impact on the score. Their spirit and determination paid off in the second half with some well worked scores whilst also keeping the Douglas tally to a minimum. However, the margin between the sides was too vast and Douglas were the decisive winners at the final whistle. While Bride Rovers were disappointed not to have a more competitive encounter in the championship, this was through no fault of their own, and they can be extremely proud of their work rate and commitment in this and all their games. Well done, girls!
