Heartbreak for U21's

U21 County Final: Bantry 5-12 Bride Rovers 4-13

Our U21 Ladies Football team were heroic in defeat to Bantry in the U21 Ladies Football County Final. With about 10 minutes to go in the County Final played in Kilmichael last Sunday we trailed a highly fancied Bantry team by 3 goals, but showing true Rovers spirit the girls never gave up and staged a remarkable comeback to nearly snatch a most famous win but time just ran out & Bantry were crowned County Champions.

Having defeated Carrigaline in the quarter-final, the Rovers played Rosscarbery last Thursday in the County Semi-Final. With Sarah Murphy out injured, Madison Parle despite injury and exams made herself available and for this we were very appreciative as she had a great game against Rosscarbery & Bantry. Injury also ruled our Emma Barry & Siobhan O'Sullivan played both games with a serious hand injury.

Bride Rovers 4-09 Rosscarbery 1-09

Rovers got off to a perfect start against Rosscarbery with Grace Culloty grabbing 2 points before Katie Quirke scored a great goal. Further goals & points from Katie & Grace had the Rovers in front 3-04 to 0-02 at half time. Rosscarbery fought back in the second half and after they scored a goal to reduce our lead to 5 points, this had a positive effect on the Rovers and further scores from Emma Roche, Katie Quirke & Grace Culloty ensured the Rovers qualified for the final on a scoreline of 4-09 to 1-09.

County Final

After defeating Rosscarbery in the semi-final on Thursday we were back in action on Sunday for the Final in Kilmichael v Bantry.

Bantry opened the scoring with a point before Katie Quirke scored a goal following a great move down the field involving Katie Connor & Aoife O'Riordan. Elaine Culloty added a point moments later before Bantry hit back with 2-02 to storm into the lead. Emma Roche & Grace Culloty added two points for the Rovers before Bantry struck again with 2 more goals. The Rovers lost the services of Aislinn O'Connor due to injury but finished the half with three points from Emma Roche, Grace Culloty & Katie Quirke. At half time we were down 4-06 to 1-06.

After half time the Rovers upped their game, the defensive unit of Talitha, Aine, Emily, Siobhan, Aoife & Laura reduced Bantrys goal threat and while the introduction of Anna Greaney & Andrea Quinn O Donovan added more pace to our attack. The first 15 minutes were tight with points be swapped at both ends. Andrea, Grace, Elaine got some fine points. Trish O'Sullivan was now getting on top at midfield as were our attackers. With 10 minutes to go we were still 3 goals behind, the Rovers switch Grace & Katie & Laura Quirke came to midfield which boosted our attack. A cracking goal from Andrea Quinn followed by a point from Grace Culloty reduced the deficit to 5 points. A free won by the Laura out on the wing, when taken by Grace Culloty found its away to the net, 2 points down and only injury time left. The Rovers attacked to try and get that winning goal but were denied by a gallant Bantry team. It was heartbreaking at the end of a pulsating game in which both teams played some great football.

Congratulations to Bantry and thanks to referee Chris Cronin who spoke so well to our team afterwards.

It was great to see so many supporters there to cheer on the team. There is a great future for this bunch of girls as they showed tremendous fighting spirit to comeback. The team enjoyed a well deserved meal in The Castle Hotel Macroom after the game.

Cork Minors

Best Wishes to Grace Culloty & Sarah Murphy who will line out with the Cork Minor Ladies Football team in the Munster Final against Kerry which is taking place this Bank Holiday Monday at 1pm in Killarney (At Dr. Crokes GAA Grounds).

Sarah has being recovering from an injury she picked up against Tipperary in the U16 Munster Final but should be fit to take her place. This is a remarkable achievement by Sarah as she is Number 1 for both the U16 & Minor Teams, without doubt an exceptional keeper.
