Terry Hughes RIP.

Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Theresa (Terry) Hughes of Dublin who died last week. Terry was a member of the Brenock family of Guinea's Cross Rathcormac, her late brother Patsy played hurling with Bride Rovers in the late 1950's before emigrating to England. Terry is survived by her three sons Alan, Sean and Martin, her sister Phil and her brothers Tom and Tim. May she rest in peace.

Early Start in 1889.

We may think that it is only in recent years that the GAA club season starts earlier each year. Not so, back in the 1880's when Tournaments were the big thing games were played, literally, all the year round. On Little Christmas Day, January 6th, 1889 the Bartlemy hurling team played Limerick side Kilfinane in a Tournament game in Shanballymore. In 1888 the same two teams had met in the Mitchelstown Tournament with Bartlemy winning easily. The result was reversed in the Shanballymore game with the Limerick side winning by 1 2 to 0 2. Tom Downes was the Kilfinane captain while William O Connell of Ballinakilla was the Bartlemy captain.  Right up until his death in 1939 William O Connell was known as 'The Captain'.
