Tom Joe O Riordan, Castlelyons, RIP.

The death of Tom Joe O Riordan last weekend caused huge sadness and grief all over North East Cork. The circumstances of his death were tragic and we extend our deepest condolences to his heartbroken family. Though he was 84 years old it seemed as if Tomjoe never grew old. He remained active and involved in a manner that belied his age. His family of wife Moira, sons Martin and William and daughter Annette and their extended families meant everything to Tomjoe. He loved family and farming and in reality he never retired so his sudden passing is all the more difficult to accept. A great community man Tomjoe never shirked from any job, any task - anything that was to be done in his neighbourhood and parish was a labour of love for him. He never sought the limelight but his influence on so many people is impossible to measure and he was at ease in the company of young and old. On the Gaelic fields of Cork the name Tom Joe O Riordan is well known and of course will be forever remembered in the annals of Castlelyons GAA Club. He was fiercely competitive at hurling, football, squash or in anything he turned his hand to. He starred along with his brothers Sonny and the late Michael on the Castlelyons tem that made a historic breakthrough by winning the East the East Cork A grade Championship in 1955, as the ballad about the team went

'And then we have Tom Riordan

       A rock-like man was he'.

Full-back was Tomjoe's position in an era of protecting the goalie with a 'thou shalt not pass' policy. He was tough but fair and I know many hurlers who played on him and they agree that getting past, through or around Tomjoe was no easy task. In 1965 when Castlelyons won the East Cork Junior B grade title- defeating Bride Rovers in the semi-final, Tomjoe was still wearing the number 3 jersey, the only member of the 1955 team still on duty. Nine years later in 1974 when Bride Rovers defeated Castlelyons in the B Grade Hurling championship in Rathcormac the veteran Tomjoe O Riordan was still starring at full back. Yes he gave sterling service on the playing field to his native club but when he finally put away his sturdy camán he immersed himself in GAA Administration. He became a long serving Treasurer of the East Cork Divisional Board. While holding this important job he also served as Chairman, secretary and selector with Castlelyons. The phrase 'a life time of service to the GAA' is oft repeated but it was so apt in the case of Tomjoe. His sons Martin and William followed in his trusty and sure footsteps wearing the green and gold jersey. William now lives in our parish and is making a huge contribution to our club at under age level. The O Riordan family have long links with our area as Tomjoe's mother was Quirke from Desert in Bartlemy. The name Tomjoe O Riordan will forever be remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather and brother, a true sportsman and a friend to so many. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
