U16 Girls finish season in style..
Our U16 girls finished off a long season in remarkable style with an impressive win over our big rivals Fermoy on a score line of 7-05 to 1-09 in the East Cork U16B football league final played on a magnificent Kilworth pitch last Monday night under lights. This game has been postponed on a number of occasions recently for a number of reasons and this actually stood to our girls in their preparations as the trained hard over the last 3 -4 weeks.
We had a full panel available on the night and it was a difficult task to pick 15 players to start the match. From the throw-in, Fermoy attacked with intent but our fullback line of Emily Larkin, Rachel O Flynn and Rebecca Walsh dealt with everything that came their way. Sarah Murphy was as solid as ever between the posts and our kickouts worked very well on the night with everyone playing the system that was worked out in training. Our half back line of Caoimhe Hazelwood, Talitha Neill and Claire Hickey were on top throughout the first half and covered a lot of ground. They had fabulous support from Siobhan O Sullivan and Aislinn O Connor in midfield. Both of our midfielders ran themselves into the ground over the hour.
Having repelled Fermoy`s early onslaught, to say we took control of the game would be an understatement. Katie Quirke and Andrea Quinn O Donovan went on a scoring spree scoring 5-02 between them in the first half. The teamwork and support play among the girls was a joy to watch. Fiona Barry, Lucy Hicks and Emma Barry were completely on top of their markers in the half forward line and Anna Murray was working tirelessly to win ball in the full forward line and set up a few scores for the other forward
At half time the girls themselves knew that the job was only half done and the resolve to complete the job was palpable. We tore into Fermoy from the start and they had no response to our tenacity and sheer will to win. Shauna Hayes replaced Anna Murray at half time and made an immediate impact. Aislinn O Connor had to leave 10 minutes into the second half. Thanks to her parents for making her available for the game. She was replaced by Ella Quinlan who had an immediate impact by setting up another goal for Andrea. At this point we were in total control and you could see that our girls were enjoying the game. They fully deserved this victory as they have been on the wrong side of similar results against Fermoy in recent years. Fermoy battled hard but had no answer to our girl`s determination and skill level. Sarah Murphy brought off a great save half way through the second half when Fermoy briefly threatened to come back. With ten minutes to go Caoimhe o Sullivan and Ciara O Flynn were introduced and immediately announced their arrival. Firstly Caoimhe intercepted two important balls and cleared them from our fullback line before Ciara ran 50 metres to get on the end of a pass from mid field to score a great point.
Fiona Barry rounded of a great performance with a cracking goal after tireless work over the hour. Centre forward was a new position for Fiona but I think it won`t be the last time we see her in that position! It is tough to pick out any one player as every one of our 19 girls was absolutely magnificent. The final whistle was met with scenes of joy by players, mentors and supporters alike. Well done girls on what was definitely your best hour`s football yet. Our seniors would want to watch out!!
