Seniors go to top two of the League..
On Saturday afternoon last we had St. Finbarrs as visitors in the REDFM county Senior Hurling League. Before a fine crowd the two teams played out a high-scoring game in an entertaining contest. Both teams were minus some of their championship line outs but the game was still played at a hectic pace. After being level at three points apiece in the tenth minute the Barrs took over. They reeled off five points without reply. We had plenty possession but with a lot of bunching in the forward line we found it hard to penetrate a teak tough Togher defence. In the last ten minutes we came more into the game and some fine points from Barry Johnson saw us just two points adrift at the short whistle. Half time: St Finbarrs 0-11. Bride Rovers 0-09.We had the aid of a slight breeze for the second half which was very tight until the end. The most significant score of the game came when Brenny O Driscoll got a vital goal for us. We went up two points but back came the Barrs with four points on the trot. We leveled again and when a draw seemed inevitable we raised the white flag to win by a single point. Full Time score : St Finbarrs 0-20. Bride Rovers 1-18.
The Barrs were well beaten by Erin's Own in their recent replayed championship tie and were short five or six from that side on Saturday. We were short players also and it was good to eke out a win in a hard fought game. This win in the Senior Hurling League put us in the number1 spot on the League Table with 22 points from 14 games -with 11 wins. We held 'top spot' for just a few hours because on Sunday Midleton beat Bishopstown to head the table on 23 points - 11 wins and 1 draw. We are at least assured of a Quarter Final place in the League and depending on our remaining games possibly a semi final.

Rebel Og East MFC.
Minor Footballers draw with Grenagh.
Bride Rovers 1.09 Grenagh 3.03. Our minor footballers travelled to Grenagh on Sunday evening to take on the home team in the second round of the Rebel Og minor B championship The match started three quarters of an hour late due to no referee turning up. With mobile phones working overtime another referee was eventually found and at 8pm the ball was thrown in. When the game did start both teams were quickly into their stride but it was the mid cork team that struck first with a well taken goal. The Rovers responded with a Conleith Ryan point but Grenagh added two similar scores. For the rest of the half the Rovers played some great football and held the home team scoreless. Great defence work ensured the forwards got a good supply of the ball, further points from Dylan Browne (3) Conor Barry and Jordan Mannix put the Rovers in a good position. A Rovers goal came in the 25th minute when the ball came back of the upright Conor Barry was quickest to react and calmly finished to the net. Grenagh struck two body blows early in the second half with goals first from play and then from the penalty spot. The Rovers response was one of sheer grit and determination and bit by bit we cut into the Grenagh lead with some great points. Dylan Browne levelled matters with five minutes to go with a point from play that just skimmed over the crossbar. Though we had a couple of chances in the dying moments it was not to be as the referee sounded the final whistle. With light fading extra time was not an option, so it's back to Rathcormac at the weekend for the replay time and date to be confirmed

Junior C Hurling Championship.
We had anticipated that our East Cork Junior championship game against Cobh might be played this weekend but no fixture has yet been made so training continues.
FIFTY YEARS AGO.
With no quarter or semi finals in the All Ireland Hurling championship series it was straight battle between the Munster and Leinster winners. Cork defeated Waterford in the Munster final on Sunday July 24th while Kilkenny beat Wexford a week earlier. Kilkenny had six weeks and Cork five weeks to prepare for the All Ireland Final. Going in to the Final Seanie Barry was the leading scorer in the Championship with 3 19 scored from 4 games while Kilkenny's Eddie Keher had 15 points scored from three games. With Cork preparing for the Final the Bride Rovers v St Catherines semi final game in the East Cork Junior B H championship was put back until later in September.
