Senior Hurlers in Quarter Final..

The long awaited draw for the next Rounds of the 2016 Cork Senior Hurling Championship were made at Pairc Ui Rinn on last Monday night. With results from the two replays on Sunday it was possible to make the draws. The only complication was that Douglas and Imokilly have not yet played. Both of these teams will still be in the Championship regardless of the result with both winners and losers progressing.

It's a new system this year with the winners of first round games playing other similar winners. We won our first game as did Avondhu so we met in the next round. Having won two games we are in the same position as five other teams  - Blackrock, Glen Rovers, Midleton, Erins Own and either Imokilly or Douglas. To make sure that eight teams qualify for the County Quarter Finals three of the six teams that had won two games were to get byes while the other three join the teams from Round 3. This gives five pairings to play in Round 4, the five winners here join the three teams who got the byes in the last eight. It sounds a bit complicated but it works out perfectly to produce eight, four and finally two teams for the 2016 County Final. Opinion was divided in advance of the draw on Monday as to whether a team will have an advantage going straight o the Quarter Final or having a Round 4 game. Anyway the draw was made and along with County Champions Glen Rovers and Blackrock we received a Bye. So for the first time since 2010 we are into the last eight in the County Championship. We are probably looking at a late August date for the quarter final fixtures.  The stand out pairings in Monday night's draws were Ballyhea v Newtownshandrum in a North Cork Derby and Sars v Midleton in East Cork.

RED FM Cork Senior Hurling League.

Our win over Youghal last week took us to third place in the League Table. We are on 16 points after winning 8 of the 11 games we have played. A Top Six place in the League would guarantee either a semi final or quarter final place. Our next Scheduled game in this competition is on Friday August the 5th when we are at home to Na Piarsaigh at 7.30 pm. After that we have 3 games to play against Carrigtwohill, St Finbarrs and Douglas.

MINORS AT HOME IN C.SHIP.

Our Minor Hurling team are at home to Watergrasshill in the Rebel Og East championship on this coming Friday night July 29th. The gamer in Pairc na Bride is fixed for 7.30pm, best of luck lads.

JUNIOR C HURLERS ON THE ROAD.

Our Junior C Hurling team struck the road for West Waterford last week and travelled to picturesque Modeligo to take on the local team in a challenge game. Our third team gave a good account of themselves in a high scoring game which we won by 4 15 to 2 12. Terry Broderick contributed 1 7 while Damian Healy scored 2 goals in a similar style to his former Club mate and Tipp hurler John 'Bubbles' O Dwyer..

Thanks to the Modeligo club for their hospitality after the game. Incidentally the last time we played Modeligo was on Sunday October the 14th 1990. On that day we travelled to the Copper Alley grounds in Youghal for a Junior Football practice game against Modeligo which we won by 2 6 to 2 4.

The team are on the road again tonight Thursday July 28th when we make the shorter journey to Knockanore to take on the home side Shamrocks in another challenge game at 7.30pm. Next week we hope to play a return game against Modeligo and a Div 3 JHL home game against Russell Rovers.

Thanks to club members who helped out with the arrangements for the Glanworth v Carrigaline game last Sunday. Glanworth had a very easy win.

 All in Bride Rovers extend best wishes to Ballyhooley, Killavullen, Abbey Rovers and Castlelyons teams this weekend. Ballyhooley and Killavullen contest the County Junior B Football and Hurling Finals against Cobh and Whitechurch respectively in Pairc Ui Rinn on Friday evening. The same evening Castletownroche's Abbey Rovers face Goleen in the County Junior C Football final in Brinny. On Sunday Castlelyons meet Ballinhassig in the Co PIHC in Pairc UI Rinn, 

Best wishes too to Castlelyons Chairman John Healy who was injured in a freak accident last weekend.

50 YEARS AGO.

Bride Rovers were drawn to play Dungourney in the first round of the East Cork Junior B Grade Hurling Championship. The teams had met at the same stage in 1965 and the Rovers had won by the narrow margin of a single point 5 9 to  7  2. A similar tight game was expected twelve months later. The Rovers team showed several changes from the previous year with Sean and Paudie Murphy, Gerald Barry, Billy O Connell, John Gettings and Henry Hazelwood coming into the side. The game against Dungourney was played in Midleton on July 31st. The Rovers got on top early on and won well on a scoreline of 3 13 to  1  9.
