Juniors and Minors in Championship action.

Our Minor Hurling team and our Junior A Hurling team are involved in vital championship encounters this week. On Thursday night July 7th we face Mayfield in the Rebel Og Minor A Hurling championship in Mayfield and the following night we meet Cobh in the East Cork Junior A Grade Hurling championship. Our Minors have had just three games in the League, defeating Youghal and Whitechurch and playing a draw with Nemo Rangers. Mayfield have five games played and despite having just one victory they will be very difficult opposition based on the results of their juvenile teams in recent years. We have a few injury problems also so this will be a tough task especially as the game is an away fixture at 7.30pm

Our Junior A Hurling team lost the opening championship game with Midleton scoring a 64th minute goal to snatch victory. It was a game that we seemed to be in control of for much of the first half. Having weathered a great Midleton comeback we went ahead again with time up only to go under from that late, late score. The opposition that night in Castlelyons was provided by Midleton's third team but on Friday night we face Cobh's first fifteen. Cobh were beaten by Russell Rovers in their first round game so now it's knock out. It will be a huge task for our lads but in fairness in recent years we have seen some outstanding and spirited performances

From this Junior A team. Just two years ago we met Cobh in this competition and lost by a single point, 1 14 to 1 13, after a great game. Leon O Flynn got injured in the Midleton game and will miss this encounter. Both Minor and Junior teams have huge encounters facing them so best of luck to all the players and mentors, go for it lads.

Under 21 Hurlers Out.

At Watergrasshill on Saturday afternoon we met Erins Own in the first round of the East Cork u21 Hurling Championship. After a very competitive first quarter Erins pulled away to lead by 1  13 to 05 at half time. They went on to win by 4 18 to 0 8. On the day we were completely outplayed by a very strong Erins Own side. For a variety of reasons we were missing five players from our panel and injuries to Ryan and Shane caused us more problems on the day. The lads that played gave their all and never gave up right until the end of the match. Three years ago we won the 'double, double' at Minor C level winning the East and County Championship and League titles so we had great hopes of a breakthrough at under 21 level this year but unfortunately to be missing so many players was simply too much of a handicap.

Davy Hogan RIP

Everyone involved with Bride Rovers was shocked last weekend when news of the sudden death of Davy Hogan of Kilblaffer, Dripsey came through. A native of Shanavougha, Kildinan Davy was a member of a family whose roots with the Bride Rovers Club are very deep. For generations members of the Hogan clan have served the Rovers as players, officers, selectors and lifelong supporters. Davy was an outstanding hurler with the club during the very successful period in the late 1960's and early 70's and he won East Cork A Grade medals in 1968 and 1969. Though living in Dripsey with many years Davy still followed the Club's fortunes and was to be seen at many of the Club's championship games. His wife Mary died at a very young age some years ago and now the family has suffered a second huge loss. We extend our sympathy to Davy's sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, grandchildren and mother in law. May he rest in peace.

PHOTOGRAPH SOUGHT.

Recently members of the Mulvey family were back in Rathcormac. They are descendants of Frank Mulvey who was a publican at main St. Rathcormac. Originally Arnolds Public House the Mulvey family from Araglen took over the premises before 1920. Since then the Public house changed hands many times - the most recent owners were Benskins. The Mulveys would dearly love to get an old picture of the Public House when the name 'Mulvey' was over the door. If anyone has such a photograph or knows where there might be one please contact 087 9538077.
