Super Senior Display..
It might have been over a hundred years since we last won a Championship game in Castletownroche but on last Saturday evening our Senior Hurling team bridged that gap in some style. After a slow start against the Avondhu Divisional team we gradually grew into the contest and went on to win by a margin of six points. As often in recent years the influence of Barry Johnson was immense, he hauled us right back into the game when it seemed the North Cork men might take complete control. On a wonderful evening for a hurling game it was a splendid occasion in Castletownroche. The home Club had everything prepared in top order with a carpet-like playing surface. By the time Nathan Wall of Carrigaline threw in the sliotar a fine crowd had gathered with Rovers supporters in the majority. From their opening game against Ballymartle in Rathcormac in May the Avondhu side had three changes with Kildorrery's Peter O Brien their top scorer that night, a notable absentee. Nevertheless with a pick from twelve clubs the Avondhu side started very well. Four different players raised white flags in the first ten minutes. Their strong running was causing a lot of problems bur gradually Mike Kearney, Brian Murphy and Stephen Walsh stemmed the flow. After an early wide from a free Barry slotted over our first two points from placed balls to leave it 0 4 to 0 2 after the first quarter of an hour. Charleville's Andrew Cagney put three points between the sides as Avondhu seemed well up for the game - their physical strength causing a lot of problems. We got a free in the seventeenth minute, it seemed an easy point scoring chance but in the twinkling of an eye the ball was in the back of the net as Barry got a great goal like the one against Courceys two years ago. That goal lifted the team and suddenly we were hurling well. A point for Avondhu restored their lead in what was an immediate response to our goal. Next came a game-changing score. A long ball into our attack seemed to be well covered by the Avondhu defence but the wily Sean Ryan won the ball against all the odds. Sean passed to Michael Collins who finished to the net - a great goal and we were two points up. Further points from Barry in the 28th and 34th minutes came at either side of a super score from Shane Walsh to leave us ahead by 2 6 to 0 9. It was good position to be in after a poor first ten minutes. Ryan, Donncha and Shane were under early pressure but got well on top. Jason worked very hard at midfield and ran to a standstill. We could have been 'out the door' after six minutes in the second half but for a succession of bad wides. Dinny landed a massive point from a free but Avondhu never gave up. All our forwards worked hard and we added a total of eight second half points. On four occasions we went four points clear but we were pegged back to three each time. A great score from Barry with nine minutes left gave us a clear two goal lead. Clyda Rover' Seamus Ronayne reduced our lead to five as Avondhu kept pressing for a goal. With a few minutes to go Dinny brought off a great save from Pa Herlihy and Michael Collins pointed to put us 2 15 to 0 15 ahead at the final whistle. It was great eighteen man effort which sees us through to (depending on the Draw) either a County Quarter Final or a Round 4 game. Well done to all the panel and management team. The effort put in so far this year has been massive and the work-rate and discipline of the team has been brilliant. We played County Junior Hurling Championship here in 1969 and Senior Hurling Championship in 2008- losing both so this was a welcome victory.

EAST CORK A GRADE JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
On Sunday evening we played Midleton in the opening round of the 2016 JAHC campaign in Castlelyons. On a beautiful surface and with weather conditions perfect it was an even opening ten minutes. With Brenny O Driscoll and Liam Forde majestic in defence. Midleton took an early 0 2 to 0 1 lead. We had levelled at thtree point apiece before Stephen Hackett had a major say in the game. He drove two close in frees to the Midleton net to help us into a nice halftime lead of 2 7 to 0 6. It was Midleton who were much the livelier team in the second half -they scored 2 10 to our 7 points. They had 1 2 inside five minutes. For the next twenty minutes the lead changed hands. We went down by two points but came back level. Then in the 30th minute Jesse Barry O Keeffe had us a point ahead. There were several minutes of added time after an injury to Leon O Flynn and with the second last puck of the game disaster struck when Midleton got a goal to leave them winners on a final scoreline of Midleton 2-16 Bride Rovers 2-14. After a great display it was a very disappointing result -a carbon copy of the JHL 2 Final below in Rostellan last autumn when Fr.O Neills stole the title at the very end also. Well done to all the lads who played and best wishes to Leon for a speedy recovery. There is a backdoor in this competition but we got a really tough end of the draw -we are to meet Cobh, a game that will probably go ahead on July 7th, 8th or 9th

EAST CORK JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE , DIV 3.
We travelled to Pairc Risteard Ui Chinneide in Killeagh last week to take on the home side in a JHL Div 3 game. Goals win games and so it proved as Killeagh won by 3 13 to 0 13.

We are fixed to play Erins Own in the East Cork u21 A Grade hurling on this Saturday coming July 2nd in Watergrasshill at 3 0 clock. Numbers of players are very tight for this grade so all eligible players are asked to be present.
IHC GAME IN PITCH
On this coming Friday night we play host to Kildorrery and Ballinhassig in the Co IHC at 7.30pm. All members who are available please be at the pitch at 6.15.
REBEL OG Under 16 HL
On Monday night last our u 16 team travelled to play Sarsfields in the League . We led by 2 6 to 1 6 at the break but Sars got well on top in the second half to win by 4 13 to 3 9. Team B. DOWN THE YEARS.
1889 North Cork Hurling Championship Final.
Castletownroche staged a major tournament in 1889, commencing on St Patricks Day. Bartlemy and the Ballyhooley No 2 team qualified for the final which Bartlemy won easily on a score of 4 7 to no score. There were a number of 'incidents' during the second half of the game and the Press Report stated that ' the closing scene was disorderly' ! After the final whistle went 'explanations were given and hands were shaken and all parted in peace'
1902 County H. Championship
On Sunday June 22nd 1902 Rathcormac played Wallstown Ramblers in the County Hurling Championship at Castletownroche at 2 o clock. Rathcormac led by 17 to nil at the break and eventually won by 2 12 to 1 1. Beast players for Rathcormac were Cranitch, Maye and barry. Rathcormac were later beaten in the Championship by Shanballymore who went all the way to the County Senior Hurling Final, losing by 3 10 to 2 5 to a Jamesy Kelleher Dungourney team.
1969 Co JAHC
Bride Rovers played Kanturk in the first round of the County JAHC in Castletownroche on Sunday October 12th 1969. The Rovers played with a gale force wind in the first half and led by 1 5 to 0 2 at the break. Kanturk took over in the second half and went on to win by 7 7 to 1 5- holding the Rovers scoreless in the second half. Kanturk defeated Mayfield in the County Junior Final.
2006 Co. SHC.
On a wet, wet evening in Castletownroche Newtownshandrum defeated Bride Rovers in the County Senior Hurling Championship. The Rovers led by 0 8 to 0 4 but Newtown went on to win by 1 9 to 0 9.
