A talk on the history of Irish sport by Dr. James Kelly, author of Sport in Ireland, 1600-1840.
At Fermoy Heritage Conference 2016
Fermoy Community Youth Centre
Saturday April 30th 3.50 pm
“
During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries a variety of medieval sports (such as archery and
falconry) effectively disappeared, or were restructured in a way that met modern needs. The period
also witnessed the emergence of new sports such as horse racing, which continue to this day, and a
variety of blood sports such as cockfighting and bull baiting.
Though many of the sports played in Ireland were of English origin, the Irish sporting landscape
also had space for native sports such as hurling and football, whose restructuring in the nineteenth
century paved the way for the modern era of mass sport.”
The conference will also look at other aspects of Irish life in the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries, including: Music, Architecture, Literature, Religion and Industry
