Junior footballers lose out to strong St. Catherine's side last Saturday
Ahead of last Saturday's game, our junior footballers had one win recorded against Fr. O'Neills in the East Cork JBFC campaign. In the heat of mid-afternoon in Castlelyons, we fell to a strong St Catherine's side on a scoreline of 2.13 to 1.05.
Despite a good effort, there is another gear for this team to move up to. We battled gamely, but I think many players will feel that we could have been closer by being less ponderous and more incisive when in possession. Collectively, we should have been more strategic in terms of claiming kick out possession, and holding a more secure defensive formation and shape. We clocked 1.05 and were very unlucky to see a second half goal effort come down from the underside of the crossbar, and land just shy of the goal line. Had this gone in, it would have seen us pull within a point of St. Catherines with 15 minutes to go.
However, from that point, we wilted and the men from Conna and Ballynoe got the upper hand, and picked off a few scores to put a deserved gloss on the scoreline.
It was clear from our players afterwards that there is a desire to go deep into this campaign. If we dust ourselves down, take the learning from this game, and all commit to addressing the limitations identified during this game in training, we may well find ourselves with the opportunity to meet St Catherines again later in the competition.
Our campaign will continue on the Sunday of the Bartlemy Harvest Festival - 14th Sept - with a local derby against Glenville at midday, before meeting Ballinacurra in our final group game on the 28th of the month.
