Bride Rovers GAA Notes. by Club PRO...

U21s in County Final this Saturday..

For the first time in the Club's history we contest the Premier 2 County Under 21 Hurling final this weekend. Last year we captured our first County Under 21 Hurling title, winning the A title in a hectic final with Cloughduv in Pairc UI Rinn. We return there on Saturday evening to play St. Finbarrs in this years decider. It's a great reflection on the fantastic work being done at underage level in the Club to be competing at this level and contesting successive County Finals.  It must be said however that we were so close to exiting the championship at semi final stage last Saturday but we got through after extra time.

Bride Rovers 2 26 Ballinhassig 3 14.

A thrilling game that took 90 minutes to decide at the 4G pitch in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday afternoon. The game started in daylight at 2 and ended under lights. It was game which appeared to be gone from us at two different stages. Twenty minutes into the opening half were eight points down -it could have been more as Ballinhassig hit two wides when in command. Then as the game was ending, deep into the fifth minute of injury time we had a two-point lead when disaster struck in the form of a Ballinhassig goal. It looked like the end of the road for this gallant team but Paddy O Flynn sent over a 65 to make it a draw. After that lucky escape the lads took full advantage of the two periods of extra time to really hurl well and take control.

Cian Hogan opened the scoring in the match with an early point before the Blues went 0 2 to 0 1 ahead.  Shane O Connor and Conor Barry (free) had our next two points before the game took a major change. In the space of two minutes the Carrigdhoun side had two goals. When they added points from frees they were 2 6 to 0 4 ahead. Granted they had the assistance of a strongish wind but it wasn't just the elements. They seemed stronger and more physical and had two more chances to go ten ahead before we really began to hurl. In the ten minutes before half time we raised the white flag on six occasions. Conor Barry hit four points- three from frees and Brian Roche and team captain Shane O Connor also raised white flags. Those scores saw us just two points in arrears at the break, a really good last ten minutes had brought us right into the game. The wind never won a game for anyone but it was a help in the second half. Conleith Ryan had a superb point on the resumption before Ballinhassig restored their two point lead, 2 7 to 0 11. Paddy O Flynn from a free left just a point in it. It was noticeable early in the second half that our defence and midfield players were getting well on top and as a result we had plenty [possession. Our wide tally was high but eventually we drew level when Conleith pointed in the 13th minute and then Conor put us ahead. Then on the three quarter of an hour mark Shaunie Know struck a great goal. When we went four point ahead it seemed we'd go on and take full control. Back came Ballinhassig with two points as the hour was up. We were still ahead by 1 15 to 2 10 as four minutes of injury time had elapsed. Surely we thought the final whistle would go bit no. Ballinhassig got a free out on the sideline under the stand. The sliotar was lobbed into the square with twenty two players waiting. Bang, it ended up in the net. It seemed we were out of the championship. From Ben Hogan's long puckout we attacked and after the umpire waved wide the referee awarded us a 65. Talk about pressure! But Paddy O Flynn sent it over in the 67th minute - a draw Bride Rovers 1 16 Ballinhassig 3 10. We were so relieved to get  the equaliser. Extra time then as darkness descended. Our lads simply took over. In the twenty three minutes played we scored 1 10 to Ballinhassig's four points.Paddy, Conor, Eoin, Shane, Shaunie and Brian all hit over points  with DJ Cahill getting a great goal. At half time in Extra Time we were 2 24 to 3 12 ahead. Conleith added tow more points in the second period. We defended well as Ballinhassig sought goals and they added two more points. In the end we won by nine points, 2 26 to 3 14. Well done lads, a great win after a mighty scare. Team B. Hogan, M. Quinn, J. Mannix, J. Connor,  E. Roche, P.O Flynn 0 3, G. O Keeney,  K. Kearney, S. O Connor 0 3( Capt), C. Hogan 0 1, B. Roche 0 2, DJ Cahill  1 1, C. Ryan 0 5, S. Knox 1 1,  C. Barry 0 9. Subs S. Ahern, S O Flynn.

COUNTY FINAL

It was on December the 9th last year we appeared in our first ever County u21 Final and while it's week later this year it's mighty to be there. It was October before we played the first round v Cloughduv but the management team have put in mighty work with many challenge games in the last three months. Our opponents St Finbarrs have defeated Tracton, Carrigaline and  Valley Rovers en route to the Final. All Bars teams are difficult to beat but we have come through a tough campaign. At it stands the game is fixed under lights in Pairc UI Rinn at 6 o clock on Saturday evening.(ET if necessary) Let's have a huge following there for this historic occasion. Lads- players and management, all in the Club are so proud of what this team has done to date -so go for it on Saturday evening.

Well Done Russell Rovers.

Dreams do come true -even in the GAA and Russell Rovers are part of the 2019 Cork GAA Fairytale. At famed Fraher Field in Dungarvan last Sunday they won the  Munster Junior Hurling Championship Final. The Shanagarry/ Ballycotton side took on and defeated a gallant St. Mary's from Touraneena in Waterford. The game was switched from Mallow because of the impending arrival of that storm with the strange name! So like their neighbours Fr O Neills, on the same pitch a few weeks ago, Russell Rovers were crowned Munster Champions - the Best Junior Hurling Team in the Province of Munster -and they only won their first East Cork Title in 2018. What a great journey they are on. In Bride Rovers we know so many of the Russell Rovers stalwarts, men who 'ploughed a lone furrow' for decades with little or no reward in the form of silverware, all changed for the better now. Well done to everyone involved on a brilliant year for the Club.
