U12 County Final

What a County final we had in Ballinora pitch on Sunday last.  The rain held off but the strong cross winds were relentless.  Our captain fantastic Abbie Hoare won the toss and elected to play against the wind.  Naomh Aban struck first with a point from a free and Ava Barry also converted our first free.  For the next 10 minutes the ball swung from end to end with Lily scoring a lovely point to put us up.  We continued to apply pressure and one moment of magic from Sarah Buckley who caught the ball on the 45, turned her marker and buried the ball in the net secured our first goal.  With Lily & Ciara working tirelessly from mid field passing the ball to Ruby, who gave a beautiful kick pass to Ava who made a great run, delivered a lovely pass to Sarah and found herself all alone with the goalkeeper to secure her second goal.  We finished at half time 2-3 to 0-2.  Straight from the kick off our backs Rachel, Nikki & Oonagh were very strong and relentless in keeping the Naomh Aban forwards at bay.  While Mollie and Abbie O C were working tirelessly to create scores.  Even though we were playing with the wind we found it difficult to break away.  For 20 min of the second half we were under immense pressure, but our half backs Aoife Mc, Abbie H and Cliona dealt with everything that was thrown at them.  Naomh Aban fought back 2-4 to 1-4 but a great save from Ella B & Ellen our goalie prevented another goal chance. Following that super save we went down the field and got 2 more points.  With time nearly up, tensions were rising both on the field and on the side line and Naomh Aban got 2 more points which left only a goal in the difference.  With great work from our introduced Subs Emily & Mai and some magnificent team work we managed to win out by a goal.

Heartbreak for Juniors

Last Saturday in wild conditions in Newcestown our Junior Ladies great run in the County Championship came to a finish by a single point defeat to Tadhg MacCarthaigh's. In sticky conditions both teams showed great levels of fitness as Tadhg MacCarthaighs held the early advantage. The Rovers were playing good football but were not converting their chances and as a result were down 1-06 to 0-03 points. In the second half we started well with a well taken goal by Sarah Murphy who was operating in the full forward line with the impressive Imelda Dorgan moving out to centre forward. Tadhg MacCartaighs hit back with some pointed frees to extend their lead but the Rovers went on a goal blitz. First Katie Kelleher scored a goal from long range and then Sarah Murphy scored her second goal. WIth time nearly up a shot by Meg Kelleher was deflected to Katie kelleher who finished to the net to tie the game going into injury time. But a dubious free which Tadhg MacCarthaighs converted resulted in a one point win for them.

Well done to all the girls involved for some fantastic brave performances. This championship run combined with the U21 shows that there is lots of talent in the club and many of these girls will be pushing for places on our senior team in 2018.

Team: Emily Larkin, Laura Pratt, Arlene O'Callaghan, Áine Cashman, Talitha O'Neill, Emma O'Keeffe, Aislinn O'Connor, Siobhan O'Sullivan, Mary Hazelwood, Katie Kelleher (captain), Sarah Murphy, Jessica O'Riordan, Emma Barry, Imelda Dorgan, Meg Kelleher, Anna Greaney, Chloe Ahern & Claire Hickey.

Camogie defeat for Cork

On sunday last the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie replay took place between Cork & Meath in the Gaelic Grounds Limerick.

In a low scoring and tough contest Meath cam out on top by 3 points, 0-10 to 0-07. This was bitter disappointment for Cork as this was their second All-Ireland lost in a row. Cork were leading at half-time 0-05 to 0-03 but only managed 2 points in the second half as Meath powered to victory. We are very proud of Jen Barry who had a great year with both the Cork Camogie Senior and intermediate teams and also to team selector Mossie O'Sullivan..
