Denny Howard RIP...

It was with a great sense of sadness last weekend that we learned of the death of Denny Howard of Garrynacole, Rathcormac. Denny was in his 93rd year and one of the oldest residents of our parish. A real gentleman Denny was involved in so many sporting pursuits during his lifetime. An athlete, hurler and footballer in the 1940's and 1950's Denny was probably unique in the sporting annals of Rathcormac Parish because he never retired from sport. Many people stay involved in sport until their early to mid 40's but in his 80's Denny was still competing at hammer-throwing. His record of National and other titles is unlikely ever to be surpassed because of his longevity in the sport. His playing days with Bride Rovers coincided with a period when the Club was not in contention for major honours. In 1954 when Paddy O Regan was the Junior A hurling team captain Denny was the vice-captain and also served as a selector along with the captain, Dave Sheehan, Jim Daly, Ned Hoskins, Denis O Sullivan, Dan Dooley and Danno O Sullivan. When the Bride Rovers Club was reformed in late 1964 Denny Howard became involved once more. In 1966 when the Club won the East Cork Junior B Grade Hurling title the three selectors were Denny Howard, Joe Browne and Dave Hogan. In later years Denny was so proud to see the Club go from strength to strength and see his son Cormac and in recent years, his grandsons involved. Denny was a sportsman in every sense of the word and loved fishing and shooting and all outdoor pursuits -attributes that all his family and grandchildren are also endowed with. Denny was predeceased by his wife Margaret, daughter in law Phil and his daughter Angela. We extend our deepest sympathy to John, Donal and Cormac, to Denny's grandchildren and to his sister Mary, brother Mike, nephews and nieces and his many friends. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
